Exploring dynamical phase transitions with a Cavity-QED platform
<p>Atom-light interactions in optical cavities provide a platform for investigating many-body quantum physics in controlled environments. In particular, they have been proposed for the realization of collective quantum spin models with tunable long-range interactions. Besides the investigation of the rich steady-state phases that can arise due to the interplay between atom-light interactions and dissipation from the cavity, one opportunity offered by these systems is the study of out-of-equilibrium dynamical phases of matter precluded from existence at equilibrium . Moreover, these phases can display intriguing universal behaviors akin to standard equilibrium phase transitions. Here, we report the observation of distinct dynamical phases of matter in a nearly unitary implementation of the collective XY spin model with transverse and longitudinal fields simulated via an ensemble of ∼106 88Sr atoms. The unique properties of our cavity-QED platform allow us to probe thedependence of the associated dynamical phase transitions on parameter space, system size and initial state. In the spirit of quantum simulation our observations can be linked to similar dynamical phases featured in a range of related scystems, including the Josephson effect in superfluid helium , coupled atomic and solid-state polariton condensates, with complementary types of control including the magnitude and sign of Hamiltonian parameters. Moreover, our system offers potential for the generation of metrologically useful entangled states in optical transitions, which can enable real metrological gains via quantum enhancement in state-of-the-art atomic clocks.</p>
Data for: Observing dynamical phases of BCS superconductors in a cavity QED simulator
<p>In conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superconductors, electrons with opposite momenta bind into Cooper pairs due to an attractive interaction mediated by phonons in the material. While superconductivity naturally emerges at thermal equilibrium, it can also emerge out of equilibrium when the system's parameters are abruptly changed. The resulting out-of-equilibrium phases are predicted to occur in real materials and ultracold fermionic atoms but have not yet all been directly observed. Here we realise an alternate way to generate the proposed dynamical phases using cavity quantum electrodynamics (cavity QED). Our system encodes the presence or absence of a Cooper pair in a long-lived electronic transition in 88Sr atoms coupled to an optical cavity and represents interactions between electrons as photon-mediated interactions through the cavity. To fully explore the phase diagram, we manipulate the ratio between the single-particle dispersion and the interactions after a quench and perform real-time tracking of subsequent dynamics of the superconducting order parameter using non-destructive measurements. We observe regimes where the order parameter decays to zero (phase I), assumes a non-equilibrium steady-state value (phase II), or exhibits persistent oscillations (phase III). This opens up exciting prospects for quantum simulation, including the potential to engineer unconventional superconductors and to probe beyond mean-field effects like the spectral form factor, and for increasing coherence time for quantum sensing.</p>

Circuit-QED characterization of a topological Josephson junction
<p>The search for topological superconductivity in topological insulator (TI) nanowires have attracted a lot of interest due to potential applications in the field of topologically protected quantum computation [1-3]. One route to emulate unconventional superconductivity is to build a topological Josephson junction from a TI nanowire (Bi2Se3) connected to two conventional superconducting electrodes (Al). Such topological Josephson junctions are expected to host Majorana zero-energy modes (bound states) when they are phase-biased at pi. The bound state spectrum of a junction hosting several transport modes consists of topological trivial Andreev bound states and topologically protected Majorana bound states. The phase dependence of those bound states has been studied experimentally using a circuit-QED-like setup, where the topological junction is embedded in a superconducting resonator. Here the frequency response of the coupled resonator/junction system to an externally applied magnetic field (phase bias) at various temperatures is used to deduce information about the phase dependence of the bound state spectrum of the junction. I detail, the contributions to the junction dissipation (which is directly reflected in the inverse quality factor of the coupled resonator/junction system) originating from zero-energy bound states and topological trivial Andreev bound states are rather distinct, which is mainly reflected in their phase bias dependence around and their evolution in temperature.</p>
