Data from: Katian (Late Ordovician) trilobites of the North Qilian Mountains and their palaeogeographical implications for the Proto-Tethys Archipelagic Ocean (PTAO)

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Trilobites from the middle Koumenzi Formation (Katian, Upper Ordovician) of the North Qilian Mountains, Menyuan, northeastern Qinghai Province are systematically documented for the first time. The fauna consists of five families, seven genera and seven species, amongst which one is new (</span><em><span>Remopleurides</span> <span>zhangi</span> </em><span>sp. nov.), showing a close relationship to those of the Kazakh terranes (such as Chu-Ili terrane, Chingiz-Tarbagatai area and KNNTS (Karatau-Naryn and North-Tien Shan Microcontinents)), North China and Laurentia palaeoplates during the Katian (Late Ordovician). The cluster and Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling analyses of the Middle<span class="fontstyle01">–Late Ordovician (</span>late Darriwilian<span class="fontstyle01">–</span>Katian<span class="fontstyle01">) trilobite faunas with 299 genera or subgenera from 46 horizons of 37 areas, provide valuable information for the palaeogeographical reconstruction of the </span>Proto-Tethys Archipelagic Ocean (PTAO) of this interval. The Qilian terrane and adjacent areas are essential components of the PTAO, some of which include the Qilian terrane (QT), the North Qilian Mountains area (NQ), the Altun faulted terrane (AFT), the Hexi Corridor area (HX) and the East Qinling terrane (EQT). Their relative positions within the PTAO are inferred by the palaeobiogeography of trilobite faunas. Based on further discussions on the spatiotemporal distribution of those faunas<span class="fontstyle01">, the </span></span><em><span>Pliomerina</span></em><span> and/or </span><em><span>Sinocybele</span> </em><span>Province of the Middle<span class="fontstyle01">–Late Ordovician (</span>late Darriwilian<span class="fontstyle01">–</span>Katian<span class="fontstyle01">) age is defined as a trilobite faunal province of the PTAO. </span>Moreover, a distinct faunal subprovince, essentially comprised of the South China Palaeoplate and its neighbours (e.g. Tarim, Annamia, Sibuma, East Qinling, Turkestan-Alai and probably Talesh), might be surrounded by the equatorial cold-water tongue.</span></p>

Data from: The Anisian (Middle Triassic) brachiopods from the southern Qilian Mountains, north-western China

<p><span>The Anisian (Middle Triassic) witnessed the diversification of brachiopods after the Permian/Triassic (P/Tr) extinction. The Anisian brachiopod fauna from the southern Qilian Mountains in north-western China has the highest taxonomic diversity at the species level among coeval faunas worldwide. Nevertheless, many taxa from this remote region remain poorly defined and therefore require emendation. Here we describe 23 species (including two uncertain species) in 15 brachiopod genera based on well-preserved carbonate and silicified specimens collected from the Anisian Dajialian and Qieermagou formations in Tianjun, southern Qilian Mountains. Two new genera (<em>Crenulatomargus</em>, <em>Tianjunospina</em>) and six new species (<em>Costirhynchopsis</em> <em>xui</em>, <em>Crenulatomargus</em> <em>terebratuliformis</em>, <em>Schwagerispira</em> <em>elegans</em>, <em>Lepismatina</em>? <em>inusitata</em>, <em>Tianjunospina</em> <em>junheensis</em>, <em>Qilianoconcha</em> <em>circularis</em>) are erected. The diagnoses of <em>Triasorhynchia</em>, <em>Yangkongia</em>, <em>Sinucostella</em>, <em>Aequspiriferina</em>, <em>Qilianoconcha</em>, and <em>Parantiptychia</em> are emended. Besides, the genus <em>Eoantiptychia</em> and the family Triasorhynchiidae are regarded as junior synonyms of <em>Qilianoconcha</em> and Tetrarhynchiidae, respectively. Systematic description and taxonomic emendation show that 56 species (including seven uncertain species) in 26 genera are confirmed in the southern Qilian brachiopod fauna. Network analysis of 14 brachiopod faunas worldwide shows that six groups were detected during the Anisian (Qingyan, southern Qilian–western Qinling, Himalaya–northern Siberia, central Qinghai, New Zealand, and Europe/western Tethys). Compared with those from the western Tethys, the eastern Tethyan faunas are less allied to each other. Except for the assemblage from the adjacent western Qinling area, other coeval faunas have much lower affinities with the Qilian fauna.</span></p>

An intra-annual 30-m dataset of small lakes of the Qilian Mountains, northeast of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, for the period 1987-2020

<p>Using Google Earth Engine platform and 13,297 Landsat TM/ETM+/OLI images, we released an&nbsp;intra-annual 30-m dataset of small lakes with different water body frequency thresholds (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%) of the Qilian Mountains region of the Tibetan Plateau from 1987 to 2020, containing 8 attributes: code, perimeter (km), area (km<sup>2</sup>), latitude, longitude, elevation (m), area error, relative error (%), and subregion. Our published dataset can provide&nbsp;support for small lakes studies across the Tibetan Plateau and other alpine regions of the world. Data from: Cryospheric hydrometeorology observation in the Hulu Catchment (CHOICE), Qilian Mountains, China

Understanding cryospheric hydrology and the effects of cryospheric changes on river runoff is critical for sustainable water management, especially in arid inland river basins, such as those in Northwest China, where water resources mainly come from alpine areas. A cryospheric hydrometeorology observation system (CHOICE) has been established since 2008 in the Hulu Catchment, which is a well instrumented experimental and representative catchment in the upper reaches of the inland Hei River, Qilian Mountains, Northwest China. The CHOICE includes dense meteorological measurements from 2,980 to 4,800 m a.s.l., such as glacier, snow and permafrost hydrology; water and heat balance in the vertical landscape zones, including alpine grassland, meadow, shrub, coniferous forest, marshy meadow and moraine-talus zones. The comprehensive of long-term observations available for the CHOICE provides the basis for model development and application in cryospheric hydrological research. We try to study on cryospheric hydrometeorological process of precipitation, freeze-thaw cycle, energy balance, soil-vegetation-atmosphere-transfer (SVAT), runoff, groundwater reservoir and hydrological resiliency within vertical altitude in CHIOCE. In addition, the CHOICE of data sharing are mainly through website (http://hhsy.casnw.net/) and WestDC database (http://westdc.westgis.ac.cn/). The CHOICE, as implied by as its name, is an open cryospheric hydrology observation and research system.

Data from: Simple parameterization of aerodynamic roughness lengths and the turbulent heat fluxes at the top of midlatitude August‐one glacier, Qilian Mountains, China

The fluxes of sensible heat (H) and latent heat (LE), which are generally the important parts of the energy and mass balances over glacier surfaces, are widely quantified by the bulk method. However, due to the difficulty of determining the aerodynamic roughness length z0m in this method, H and LE values may still have large uncertainties with significant inaccuracy. To acquire reliable varying and intrinsic z0m values, new simpler parameterizations for z0m values at different ranges of the friction velocity u*b were fitted in this study. The method was implemented using the related meteorological data and glacial sublimation/condensation measured at the top of the August‐one glacier (4817 m a.s.l.) in the Qilian Mountains from 1 July 2016 to 15 August 2017. The parameterization shows that z0m increased sharply when u*b exceeded 0.43 m/s (the approximate threshold value) and that the effect of snowdrift was slight for the hourly z0m values in the range 0.15 ≤ u*b ≤ 0.43 m/s, which could thus be used to calculate the daily z0m. During the wet period (1 July to 24 September 2016 and 5 May to 15 August 2017), the turbulent fluxes calculated by the bulk method showed that net radiation Rnet was the primary source of surface energy (60.7 w/m2), whereas during the dry period (25 September 2016 to 4 May 2017), the main heat sink was the positive H (28.5 w/m2) rather than the negative Rnet (–10.0 w/m2).
