A canção de protesto e a sua herança no rap

<p>A can&ccedil;&atilde;o de protesto constitui um dos elementos mais representativos da resist&ecirc;ncia durante a ditadura e do processo revolucion&aacute;rio decorrente do 25 de Abril. Um dos seus herdeiros &eacute; o <em>rap</em>, g&eacute;nero musical que desde a d&eacute;cada de 1990 prossegue um trabalho de interven&ccedil;&atilde;o e den&uacute;ncia social com caracter&iacute;sticas e objectivos pr&oacute;ximos. Federica Lupati reflecte sobre os di&aacute;logos e os paralelos entre estas duas express&otilde;es musicais, a sua actualidade, o impacto na sociedade dos anos 1970 e dos nossos dias, em particular no que diz respeito &agrave;s mulheres.<br><br>Federica Lupati &eacute; investigadora integrada do CHAM, doutorada em Estudos Portugueses (Uni. Nova de Lisboa) e mestre em Literaturas e Culturas P&oacute;s-coloniais (Universit&agrave; Ca' Foscari, Veneza). Effectiveness of Softening Agents for Enhancing Properties of Asphalt Mixes with High RAP Contents

<p>A high percentage of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in new asphalt concrete can lead to developing premature failure of asphalt pavements due to fatigue or low-temperature cracking. The use of softening agents in asphalt binders can resolve these problems. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of softening agents for enhancing the properties of asphalt mixes with high RAP contents. Two waste products, namely, waste cooking oil (WCO), and engine bottom oil (EBO) along with a commercially produced rejuvenator were investigated in this study. The following three types of Performance Grade (PG) binders, each collected from two different sources, were considered in this study: PG 64-22, PG 70-22, and PG 76-22. These PG binders blended with different amounts (0, 15, 25, 40, and 60%) of RAP binders were rejuvenated with different dosages (0, 10, 15, and 20%) of the selected softening agents. Empirical tests (e.g., penetration and pH), Superpave tests, Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and limited laboratory and field performance of asphalt mixture samples were also evaluated. It was found that the rejuvenators reduced the viscosity of the binder samples. The results showed that the rejuvenated binders reduce the production temperatures as well as the brittleness of the hard binders. The AFM results showed that modulus and deformation values of rejuvenated binders were significantly less than those of their unrejuvenated counterparts. Similarly, distinct peaks were observed in the FTIR peaks due to the rejuvenation. The findings of this study will help pavement professionals in selecting suitable rejuvenators in the construction of pavements with high RAP contents.</p>

Catalyst Regeneration of RAP-Binder in Asphalt

<p>Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) binders are difficult to reuse because they often contain associated/aggregated molecules with very high molecular weights. This is due to the polarity gained during oxidative aging, causing the aggregation to occur. These high molecular weight components are responsible for RAP binder&rsquo;s increased viscosity and certain deteriorated rheological properties. One strategy to reuse RAP binder is to mix it with virgin asphalt binder and use this partially recycled mixture in asphalt. The RAP binder is usually improved before mixing by the addition of rejuvenators, softening agents, softer binders, and antioxidants to the asphalt binder mix to rebalance their rheological properties. The purpose of this research was to study effective ways to incorporate RAP content in asphalt mixtures using a novel approach of introducing a catalyst that can modify the binder&rsquo;s chemical composition; particularly to alter the oxidized molecules and reduce the number/content of aggregated structures. The use of a catalyst such as a Lewis acid to break the associated molecules in the RAP-binder is a new promising approach. The Lewis acids catalysts are known to catalyze the conversion of coal to liquid product, but the mechanism of action is not well understood. This report describes the result of our investigation into the effects of a Lewis acid catalyst such as Iron (III) chloride and Zinc chloride on the chemical composition of RAP-binder. The ultimate result is that Iron (III) chloride lowers the size of high molecular weight material when 2% w/w is used with RAP at 165 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes.</p>

The angle of attack: Rapping technique predicts skill in hermit crab contests

<p>Skill, the ability to perform a challenging behaviour well, has been shown to be an important determinant of success in a variety of contexts, including human sports, animal courtship and most recently, animal contests. Because skilful movement requires precise motor control, skill is assumed to be underpinned by traits that determine these abilities. However, while these traits determine an individual's potential to perform skilful movements (known as technique), this potential may not translate into skilful fighting due to interference from the opponent. Here, we investigate the relationship between technique and skill using the European hermit crab <i>Pagurus bernhardus</i>. By examining the spatial distribution of shell raps, we find that on average, technique exhibited during a "training" fight predicts the level of skill displayed in a real contest. However, our results also demonstrate substantial among-individual variation in the direction of change across the two fights, with some individuals exhibiting better technique than skill and others showing the opposite pattern. Finally, we find that winners, but not losers, progressively adapt their targeting of strikes when faced with a fully functional opponent. Our results indicate that skill is a combination of innate technique and the ability to adapt to an opponent's behaviour.</p>
