Redd survey data of Chinook salmon in the Feather River

Since 2014, the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) has conducted annual Chinook salmon redd surveys. The objective of this data collection effort is to quantify and understand potential shits in redd distribution and potential habitat differences between historic and restored sites. The redd surveys are conducted in the uppermost 16 miles of the lower Feather River though have been concentrated in the uppermost two miles of the lower Feather River in, and adjacent to the Gravel Supplementation Areas (GSAs). Redd surveys are conducted less frequently in the 14 miles downstream of the GSAs. Surveys typically begin in mid-September at the onset of spawning and generally conclude at the end of November. This dataset represents an extensive time series that could be used to identify habitat conditions where Chinook salmon spawn, how these conditions have changed over time, especially in areas where restoration has occurred. These data were published to support the Healthy Rivers and Landscapes Program.

Hallwood Floodplain and Side Channel Restoration Project - Salmonid Redd Surveys on the Yuba River 2014-2023

Cramer Fish Sciences (CFS), cbec, inc. ecoengineering, and South Yuba River Citizen’s League, funded and directed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service’s Anadromous Fish Restoration Program (USFWS AFRP) and Yuba Water Agency, teamed to plan, design, monitor, perform regulatory compliance for the Hallwood Side Channel and Floodplain Restoration Project (Project) on the Yuba River, California. The Project is designed to restore and enhance ecosystem processes, with a primary focus on improving productive juvenile salmonid rearing habitat to increase natural production of fall and spring-run Chinook Salmon ( Oncorhynchus tshawytscha ) and steelhead ( O. mykiss ) in the Yuba River. The Project would enhance and/or create up to 157 acres of seasonally inundated riparian floodplain habitats, 1.7 miles of perennial side and alcove channels, and more than 6.1 miles of seasonal side channels. The design approach focuses on removing unnatural constraints (such as a mid-river training wall and very coarse surface materials left from mining activities) in order to allow natural river and floodplain processes to function. Construction planning efforts include multi-year phasing to remove about 3.2 million cubic yards of material from the site while optimizing habitat establishment in early years and minimizing disturbance to existing high quality riparian and aquatic habitat. The Project included a robust monitoring program that measured the effect of restoration on a range of ecological parameters thought to influence salmonid habitat use and productivity and riparian ecosystem function using a Before-After-Control-Impact study framework. Specifically, we monitored salmonid and non-native predator density, juvenile salmonid growth and residence time, predation, invertebrate prey (drift) density and biomass, and changes in acreage of a range of habitat types, including terrestrial and aquatic vegetation. We also examined factors influencing natural riparian tree recruit

City of Seattle, Seattle Public Utilities, Annual Bull Trout Redd Surveys in Tributaries to Chester Morse Lake 1996-current, Cedar River Municipal Watershed, King County, WA

These data were collected during weekly annual redd surveys conducted by Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) in the Cedar River Municipal Watershed (CRMW), 1996 - current. Annual weekly bull trout redd surveys funded through the CRMW Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) began in 2000 and ended in 2011 spawning year. To reinstate a monitoring program for the population, redd surveys in the most heavily used habitats by bull trout (termed the Core Zone), were opportunistically conducted in 2018. Weekly annual surveys in most of the Core Zone were reinstated in 2019. Approximately 77% of all redds observed 2000 - 2011 would have been observed during those years using the 2019 - 2022 spatial survey extent (SPU data on file). In 2023, the spatial and temporal coverage of surveys were on par with historical coverage, i.e., approximately 100% of all redds observed 2000 - 2011 would have been observed using the 2023 spatial survey extent. Information on redd location is used primarily to enable derivation of redd elevations. Redd elevation is required to estimate potential impacts to the spawning population and incubating embryos caused by reservoir inundation of stream spawning habitat after the spawning period during fall through spring. Redd weekly timing information is critical to accurately represent whether embryos remain in the gravel and are vulnerable to impacts of reservoir inundation as the reservoir is refilled starting in early spring. It is also vitally important that SPU understand timing and abundance of redds beyond the inundation zone to enable understanding of the overall impact to the population.
