Animation video on responsible research and innovation (RRI)

<p>This is a short animation video about responsible research and innovation. Watch it here: https://youtu.be/fOG5U2QweBo</p> <p>In research guided by responsible research and innovation (RRI), members of society work with scientists to align both the entire research process and its results with societal needs. The researcher and the research institute or research funder turn openly to citizens and involve the relevant societal actors in formulating research questions and collecting and analysing data. In RRI-guided research, scientists never forget to ask themselves: will our research do good to society and the Earth? What will its long-term social, ethical, and ecological consequences be? If a researcher or research-performing organisation integrates responsibility into their work, they will feel more useful and impactful in their profession, all in order to improve the lives of their fellow human and non-human beings. For this reason, it is important for researchers to reflect on their own organisational operations and change their daily routines. This is exactly what the Co-Change Project started to experiment with. In order to raise awareness of RRI, the project initiated ongoing deliberation within and beyond its own organisations through discussing ethics, gender, and open-science-related topics that engage all units that deal with research and innovation, as well as involving external experts and stakeholders in co-creating change.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

ETHNA Validation Survey on Drivers and Barriers of Responsible Research & Innovation (RRI)

<p>This entry includes the ETHNA Validation Survey on Drivers and Barriers of Responsible Research &amp; Innovation (RRI) questions in PDF and the servey results in Excel. Ths survey was conducted by Centre for Social Innovation (ZSI) as part of the WP4 of the European ETHNA System project. The survey explores potential good RRI practices and possible measures to gauge the RRI institutionalisation progress at research-performing organisations.</p> <p>The online survey was sent in October 2021 to a broad group (10.000+) of potentially relevant expert stakeholders identified through a Web of Science database search with the aim of assessing the relevance of the identified drivers, barriers and good practices of RRI institutionalisation. Altogether 888 responses were received from 69 countries with a balanced gender representation, involving the opinion of mostly senior experts (55% having more than 15 years of experience).&nbsp;After filling out general demographic and organisational information, the respondents rated the perceived relevance of the RRI incentives, barriers and good practices that were the highest ranked at the end of the second consultation phase (using a Likert scale of 1-10).&nbsp;</p>

Global indicators framework for socially responsible research and innovation (RRI): How to monitor public and researcher perspectives (Supplemental material)

<p>This data upload provides a detailed account of indicators that can be used to measure RRI progress around the world&nbsp;against the UNESCO Recommendation for Science and Scientific Researchers at the level of individual researchers and public opinion. This data upload provides supplemental material for an article in Open Research Europe entitled, &#39;Global indicators framework for socially responsible research and innovation (RRI): How to monitor public and researcher perspectives&#39;.</p> <p>Abstract for main article:</p> <p>As calls for more socially responsible research and innovation (RRI) policies and practices grow more insistent, the need for high quality indicators that can be used to evaluate progress is becoming increasingly important. Given the global nature of science, such indicators need to be relevant to countries across all world regions. Moreover, the methodological quality of indicators is critical to provide a strong foundation for long-term comparative measurement of the impacts of different kinds of policy intervention. There is a practical challenge in this effort relating to the uneven mechanisms for data collection and analysis available in different countries. There is also a geopolitical challenge in gaining buy-in from countries with very different, and sometimes competing, agendas. Here, the 2017 UNESCO-led Recommendation on Science and Scientific Researchers is highlighted as an existing vehicle that can enable cooperation on globally comparative measurement of socially responsible research and innovation. In particular, the quadrennial monitoring of the implementation of this wide-ranging global policy instrument that has been ratified by 195 countries affords a unique opportunity to add value for these countries by linking RRI to the 2017 Recommendation while establishing benchmark indicators for RRI more generally. As a practical and methodological contribution to the global community of science and innovation policymakers, researchers and research and innovation stakeholders committed to socially responsible research, this report contains specific, detailed survey questions and response options focusing on the public opinion and individual researchers&rsquo; level of measurement. It provides details of sources of benchmark survey data that have readily available open data that can be used to benchmark the development of socially responsible research and innovation over time from the vantage points of the public and researchers around the world. The aim of this kind of indicators framework is to enable evidence-based practice in socially responsible research and innovation. Robust and practical RRI measurement on a global scale can reduce the risk that well-intentioned but ill-conceived RRI policy and practice interventions create undetected, unchecked, and unreformed negative impacts in practice.</p>

Expert-based literature review on RRI indicators for science education assessment: PERFORM analysis matrix

<p>The document contains the main variables and categories of analysis of the expert-based literature review conducted as part of the assessment impact developed in the PERFORM project. This literature review globally aimed to identify and characterize assessment frameworks used in the context of science learning and engagement with young people. Specifically, it examined the operationalization of: i) RRI values and process requirements, ii) transversal competences, iii) experiential aspects, and iv) cognitive aspects. In doing that assessment gaps and challenges where identified relevant to the context of PERFORM and, more broadly, to the development of science education assessments incorporating the RRI dimension. By assessment framework we refer to a set of interlinked criteria, practices and concepts providing a systematic way of data collection, analysis and interpretation to the study of science learning and engagement. The template for data collection was organised in different sections approaching the following specific review questions and sub-questions:</p> <ol> <li><em>What assessment frameworks can be identified in the selected sample?</em> <ol> <li>On which disciplines are they based?</li> <li>What is being assessed in these frameworks?</li> <li>How it is the evaluation conducted?</li> <li>What are the challenges of each approach for assessing science learning and engagement?</li> </ol> </li> <li><em>How are transversal competences, RRI and emotional factors included in these frameworks?</em> <ol> <li>How are these notions operationalised?</li> <li>What kinds of evaluation indicators are applied for data collection, if any?</li> </ol> </li> </ol>

TRANSFORM video - Introducing RRI into the governance of regional R&I

<p>TRANSFORM is a European&nbsp;project (under Horizon 2020) aiming at introducing citizen engagement practices into the governance of regional research and innovation (dealing in particular with Smart Specialisation Strategies &ndash; S3) in three European territories: Lombardy (Italy), Catalonia (Spain), Brussels-Capital (Belgium). Under the common framework of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI), each region runs pilot actions aimed at implementing open and inclusive processes that make local research and innovation priorities more connected to societal needs while generating socially acceptable solutions through the involvement of multiple stakeholders. Help wanted identifying hams in Swarm-E (e-POP) RRI data

<p>In the spirit of making&nbsp;data from the&nbsp;<a href="https://epop.phys.ucalgary.ca/rri/">Radio Receiver Instrument (RRI)</a>&nbsp;onboard <a href="http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Observing_the_Earth/Swarm/Swarm_trio_becomes_a_quartet">Swarm-E</a> (formally known as&nbsp;<a href="https://epop.phys.ucalgary.ca/">e-POP</a>)&nbsp;more accessible to the ham radio community via the Ham Radio Science Citizen Investigation&nbsp;(<a href="http://hamsci.org/about-hamsci">HamSCI</a>), we have converted RRI&#39;s data into a &quot;.raw&quot; format so that it can be ingested into open source software such&nbsp;as&nbsp;<a href="http://gqrx.dk/">Gqrx</a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gnuradio.org/">GNU Radio</a>.&nbsp; We have done this for all RRI data related to the 2015, 2017, and 2018 ARRL Field Days.</p> <p>We encourage everyone to help us identify hams in RRI&#39;s signal.&nbsp; You can use the Gqrx tool discussed here, or you can use your own technique.&nbsp; If you decode a ham&#39;s call sign, if you would like to share your technique, or if you have any comments or suggestion&nbsp;<a href="mailto:perry@phys.ucalgary.ca?subject=HamSCI%3A%20RRI%20ARRL%20%22raw%22%20data%20dump">contact us</a>&nbsp;and let us know!&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Data Rules of the Road</strong></p> <p>Please acknowledge the HamSCI project and Gareth&nbsp;Perry&nbsp;when using data from this archive in presentations and publications.</p> <p><strong>Swarm-E&nbsp;RRI</strong></p> <p>Swarm-E RRI is a digital radio receiver with 4 3-m monopole antennas.&nbsp; In most cases, the monopoles are electronically configured into a crossed-diople configuration.&nbsp; In this configuration, RRI records I/Q samples for the two dipoles.&nbsp; RRI has a sampling rate of 62500.33933 Hz, and a ~40 kHz bandpass, and can be tuned to anywhere between 10 Hz and 18 MHz.&nbsp; More information on Swarm-E&nbsp;RRI can be found in the&nbsp;<a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11214-014-0130-y">Swarm-E RRI instrument paper</a>&nbsp;or Gareth Perry&#39;s recent&nbsp;<a href="http://hamsci.org/article/field-day-cassiope-2015-results-published-radio-science">Radio Science article</a>.</p> <p><strong>Data Format</strong></p> <p>Each data file contains raw 32 bit complex&nbsp;I/Q samples&nbsp;for a given RRI dipole at a given frequency.&nbsp; The samples are interleaved, e.g., IQIQIQIQ... The data files do not contain any metadata.&nbsp; Any information regarding the time, frequency, and corresponding RRI dipole is in the file name.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Filename Format</strong></p> <p>The filename format gives information about the time and data of the recording, the tuned frequency, and which of RRI&#39;s dipoles the recording corresponds too.&nbsp; For example,&nbsp;<em>gqrx_20150628_011614_3525000_62500_RRI_Dipole1&nbsp;</em>contains data recorded on Dipole 1, starting at 01:16:14 UT on June 28, 2015, at 3525000 Hz (3.525 MHz), at a sampling rate of 62500 Hz (RRI&#39;s 62500.33933 Hz sampling rate).</p> <p><strong>Gqrx</strong></p> <p>We have opted to convert the data into the .raw format so that it can be ingested into&nbsp;<a href="http://gqrx.dk/">Gqrx</a>.&nbsp; There are other ways of analyzing RRI&#39;s data; this is just one way which we felt was as easy first step.&nbsp; We are open to posting about other techniques on the HamSCI site as well.&nbsp; To help get started with Gqrx, we have developed a&nbsp;<a href="http://hamsci.org/resource/how-play-rri-raw-iq-file-gqrx"><em>How to play an RRI raw IQ file on Gqrx</em></a>&nbsp;page.</p>
