Racism in Medicine: Impact of Discussion Among Medical Students
<p>Purpose</p> <p>This study evaluated the impact of the Racism in Medicine Summit on student perceptions of various topics related to racism in medicine. The Summit was organized at the Wayne State University School of Medicine (WSUSOM) to educate students, faculty and staff on how structural racism affects the residents of Detroit and the historical relationship between health care and vulnerable populations. The Summit aimed at providing context for what students in Detroit will encounter as physicians-in- training and the skills they will need to master while working within similar communities.</p> <p>Method</p> <p>Qualtrics surveys were created and distributed via email to attendees before and after the event. Responses were obtained via Likert scale and open-text questions.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 342 out of 445 participants (77%) completed both the pre- and post-survey. Quantitative analysis in post-survey responses revealed more familiarity among participants regarding specific instances of racism in the history of medicine, greater extent of thinking the history of racism impacts present-day Detroit residents, greater extent of thinking that racism influences medical care and/or medical outcomes, and belief that racism is reflected in medical research, compared to pre-survey responses (p < 0.001). Participants also reported more often considering racial or societal influences when learning medicine and more knowledge of what they can do to combat racism as a student and physician (p < 0.001).</p> <p>Qualitative analysis revealed seven themes among participants: the history of racism in</p> <p>Powered by Editorial Manager® and ProduXion Manager® from Aries Systems Corporation</p> <p>medicine, personal reflection, racism in research, bias and microaggression, actions to take against racism, resources for anti-racist education, and racism in medical education.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Demonstrable changes in medical student attitude and awareness surrounding topics of racism and health care were achieved after the Racism in Medicine Summit. This can serve as a model for other medical schools to raise awareness about racism in medicine.</p>
Strategies for and Barriers to Collaboratively Developing Anti-racist Policies and Resources as Described by Geoscientists of Color Participating in the Unlearning Racism in Geoscience (URGE) Program
<p>The Unlearning Racism in Geosciences (URGE) program guides groups of geoscientists as they draft, implement, and assess anti-racist policies and resources for their workplace. Some participating Geoscientists of Color (GoC) shared concerns about microaggression, tokenism, and power struggles within their groups. These reports led us to collect and analyze data that describe the experiences of GoC in URGE. The data are from five discussion groups and two surveys. Our analyses revealed that participating GoC want to continue working with White colleagues on anti-racist work. GoC want White colleagues not to shy away from doing anti-racist work. Instead, GoC want White colleagues (1) to create and adhere to robust behavioral codes of conduct, (2) to focus discussions on anti-racism, (3) to act on anti-racism initiatives, (4) not to prompt GoC to educate them or reveal trauma, and (5) to refrain from microaggressions and tokenism. These desired outcomes were achieved in some groups with varying degrees of success. Correcting a history of mistrust relating to racism and anti-racism action is key to implementing and assessing effective anti-racist policies and resources. This requires leadership support, following through on anti-racism action, and deepening relationships between GoC and White colleagues. Future anti-racist programs should spend a substantial amount of time on and demonstrate the importance of training participants how to discuss racism effectively and how to create and adhere to robust behavioral codes of conduct. Future programs should also explore developing a robust program-wide code of conduct that includes a policy for reporting offenses.</p>

<p><span><span>This talk was delivered by Dr. Pedro Monarrez on March 26th, 2024. </span></span></p> <p><span><span>Dr. Monarrez is the Recruitment, Outreach, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (RODEI) coordinator in the Department of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences at UCLA. His research investigates the biological processes that drive evolutionary patterns of marine organisms across geologic time and the role that the environment has played in these processes. <p>Les fantômes du colonialisme, faits de mémoire et de post-mémoire, sont au cœur des débats sur la nouvelle identité française de l'après-décolonisation. Une France où, avec la fin de l'empire et les flux de population qu'il a entraînés, les Françaises et les Français sont aussi des pieds-noirs, des harkis, d'anciens combattants, des Franco-Algériens dont les parents ont émigré en France avant et après l'indépendance, et des descendants de tous ces groupes. La France d'aujourd'hui est un creuset de personnes diverses, avec des expériences et des souvenirs très différents de l'ancien empire. Ils ont cependant un héritage commun : ils ont été témoins de la façon dont leur vie – et celle de leurs parents – a été affectée par un moment historique extrêmement important, une révolution qui a entraîné des changements marqués dans leur vie, dans la forme de leur pays et dans leur identité. Cela a généré une variété de récits dont nous entendrons des exemples dans les prochains épisodes et qui, d'une certaine manière, construisent une histoire différente de la France et de l'Algérie, basée sur les spectres familiaux de leurs parents et grands-parents.<br><br>Aujourd'hui, les Algériens, les Franco-Algériens et leurs descendants réclament un espace pour des récits qui racontent effectivement leurs histoires, en contournant les lacunes, les silences et les divergences des mémoires non racontées de leurs pères, de leurs mères, de leurs oncles et de leurs grands-parents. Mais surtout, ils veulent construire des récits qui comblent les lacunes, les silences et les divergences présents dans le récit officiel de l'État français, en particulier en ce qui concerne la guerre d'indépendance algérienne. Pendant de nombreuses décennies, dit Graça dos Santos, l'État français a refusé de nommer explicitement l'événement, ce qui, nous dit-elle, est symptomatique d'un malaise latent.<br><br>La direction a été assurée par Inês Nascimento Rodrigues, le montage sonore par José Gomes et le graphisme par Márcio de Carvalho.
