Assessing evapotranspiration realism in rainfall-runoff models using evapotranspiration signatures

<p>&nbsp;</p> <p>This dataset contains simulated actual evapotranspiration (AET) data derived from five conceptual hydrological models and input data applied to 14 catchments in Australia. The data spans the period from 1980 to 2022. The five models included in this dataset are:</p> <ul> <li>SIMHYD</li> <li>IHACRES</li> <li>VIC</li> <li>SACRAMENTO</li> <li>GR4J</li> </ul> <p>These models were implemented in version 2.1 of the MaRRMoT framework.</p> <p>Here, the models were calibrated using two different approaches:</p> <ol> <li>Calibration based on discharge data only. (Folder: ModelCalQ_Data)</li> <li>Calibration using a composite objective function that incorporates both discharge and AET data. (Folder: ModelCalQnAET_Data)</li> </ol> <p>Example script is also included in each model folder, such as &lsquo;<em>Run_Simhyd_MaRRMoT_Cal_Spartan.m&rsquo;</em>, to facilitate the running of the models and understanding of the calibration process.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Toward greater realism in inclusive fitness models: the case of caste fate conflict in insect societies

<p>In the field of social evolution, inclusive fitness theory has been successful in making a wide range of qualitative predictions on expected patterns of cooperation and conflict. Nevertheless, outside of sex ratio theory, inclusive fitness models that make accurate quantitative predictions remain relatively rare. Past models dealing with caste fate conflict in insect societies, for example, successfully predicted that if female larvae can control their own caste fate, an excess should opt to selfishly develop as queens. Available models, however, were unable to accurately predict levels of queen production observed in <em>Melipona</em> bees – a genus of stingless bees where caste is self-determined – as empirically observed levels of queen production are ca. two times lower than the theoretically predicted ones. Here, we show that this discrepancy can be resolved by explicitly deriving the colony-level cost of queen overproduction from a dynamic model of colony growth, requiring incorporation of parameters of colony growth and demography, such as the per-capita rate at which new brood cells are built and provisioned, the percentage of the queen's eggs that are female, costs linked with worker reproduction and worker mortality. Our revised model predicts queen overproduction to more severely impact colony productivity, resulting in an evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS) that is ca. half that of the original model, and is shown to accurately predict actual levels of queen overproduction observed in different <em>Melipona</em> species. Altogether, this shows how inclusive fitness models can provide accurate quantitative predictions, provided that costs and benefits are modelled in sufficient detail and are measured precisely.</p>

Semantic Triples from "A Collaborative, Realism-Based, Electronic Healthcare Graph: Public Data, Common Data Models, and Practical Instantiation"

<p>These RDF triples (<a href="https://zenodo.org/api/files/3d3308cb-8221-4a17-abc5-0ae32bb33f26/synthea_graph_exportable.nq.zip?versionId=7aff7c4a-bb0c-46ae-b006-7a80bcec0925">synthea_graph_exportable.nq.zip</a>) are the result of modeling electronic health records (<a href="https://zenodo.org/api/files/3d3308cb-8221-4a17-abc5-0ae32bb33f26/synthea_csv_output_turbo_cannonical.zip">synthea_csv_output_turbo_cannonical.zip), </a>that were synthesized with the Synthea software (https://github.com/synthetichealth/synthea). Anyone who loads them into a triplestore database is encouraged to provide feedback at https://github.com/PennTURBO/EhrGraphCollab/issues. The following abstract comes from a paper, describing the semantic instantiation process, and presented to the ICBO 2019 conference (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1eYXTBl75Wx3XPMmCIOZba-8Cv0DIhlRq/view).</p> <p>ABSTRACT:&nbsp; There is ample literature on the semantic modeling of biomedical data in general, but less has been published on realism-based, semantic instantiation of electronic health records (EHR). Reasons include difficult design decisions and issues of data governance. A collaborative approach can address design and technology utilization issues, but is especially constrained by limited access to the data at hand: protected health information.</p> <p>Effective collaboration can be facilitated by public EHR-like data sets, which would ideally include a large variety of datatypes mirroring actual EHRs and enough records to drive a performance assessment. An investment into reading public EHR-like data from a popular common data model (CDM) is preferable over reading each public data set&rsquo;s native format.</p> <p>In addition to identifying suitable public EHR-like data sets and CDMs, this paper addresses instantiation via relational-to-RDF mapping. The completed instantiation is available for download, and a competency question demonstrates fidelity across all discussed formats.</p>

Data from: Mesoclosures – increasing realism in mesocosm studies of ecosystem functioning

1. Experimental studies linking community composition to functioning are typically confined to small and closed micro- or mesocosms. Such restricted conditions may affect both species' biology and their environment. Yet, targeting simple features in the behaviour of species may circumvent these constraints. Focusing on ecological functions provided by dung beetles, we test whether large, open-top cages – MESOCLOSURES – will intercept the flight trajectories of beetles, thereby allowing manipulation of local community composition. 2. MESOCLOSURES were built in both tropical forest (Brazil) and temperate grasslands (Finland), thus testing their general efficiency. Within the respective environments, we varied different aspects of MESOCLOSURE design: in the tropical forest, we examined the impact of MESOCLOSURE dimensions on exclusion efficiency, whereas in the temperate grassland, we assessed the potential for selectively excluding and including community members by different mesh sizes. In the temperate environment, we also went from method to application, using MESOCLOSURES to relate community composition to functioning under two simulated grazing regimes. 3. MESOCLOSURES allowed efficient manipulation of dung beetle communities, maintaining dung beetle densities at intended levels in both temperate and tropical systems. In the tropics, the smallest cages (1 × 1 m) offered the highest contrast in beetle densities inside vs. outside of the fence, whereas the largest cages (9 × 9 m) offered the lowest. Nonetheless, densities inside cages never exceed one-fifth of those outside. At the temperate site, manipulations of community structure through mesh size yielded significant differences in functioning and suggested an interaction between small dung-dwelling species and large tunnelling species. Within cages, higher grazing was reflected in augmented dung removal. 4. We conclude that MESOCLOSURES can be effectively used to study dung beetle functions across habitats and latitudes. As applied insights, the present study adds resolution to the significance of different functional groups of dung beetles and shows that grazing pressure may have an important impact on the ecosystem functions that they provide. Overall, this study suggests that targeted manipulation of dispersal may offer new solutions for linking fauna to ecosystem functions with minimal impact on the processes measured.
