The new normal? Redaction bias in biomedical science

<p>A concerning amount of biomedical research is not reproducible. Unreliable results impede empirical progress in medical science, ultimately putting patients at risk. Many proximal causes of this irreproducibility have been identified, a major one being inappropriate statistical methods and analytical choices by investigators. Within this, we formally quantify the impact inappropriate redaction beyond a threshold value in biomedical science. This is effectively truncation of a data-set by removing extreme data points, and we elucidate its potential to accidentally or deliberately engineer a spurious result in significance testing. We demonstrate that the removal of a surprisingly small number of data points can be used to dramatically alter a result. It is unknown how often redaction bias occurs in the broader literature, but given the risk of distortion to the literature involved, we suggest that it must be studiously avoided, and mitigated with approaches to counteract any potential malign effects to the research quality of medical science.</p>

Neural Image Segmentation for Redacted Text Detection Dataset

<p>This dataset was created for the "<span>Redacted Text Detection Using Neural Image </span><span>Segmentation Methods</span>" project, and contains roughly 1000 pages with manually annotated redactions in Dutch documents released under the WOO, with the trained model files and the model outputs also included in the dataset. Ledger of data redactions in NICE Technology Appraisals

<p>The file, &#39;data_redactions_ledger_NICE&#39;,&nbsp;provides a complete data set on 600 Technology Appraisals (TAs) and 10 Highly Specialised Technologies (HSTs) issued by NICE between March 2000 when TA1 was published and September 11, 2019 when TA 600 was published. Data are extracted for 408 active TAs and 10 HST. Remaining appraisals are recorded in the replaced/terminated tabs. The document is organised in 13 different tabs. A comprehensive description of the file&#39;s structure is in the first tab.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

2D Macro-XRF to reveal redacted sections of French queen Marie-Antoinette secret correspondence with Swedish count Axel von Fersen

<p>During the French Revolution, Marie-Antoinette, queen of France and wife of Louis the XVIth, maintained a highly secret correspondence with the Swedish count Axel von Fersen, her close friend and rumored lover. An unidentified censor later redacted certain sections of the exchanged letters. This presumably sensitive content has been puzzling historians for almost 150 years. We report on the methodology that successfully unraveled this historical mystery. X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy was used in macro scanning mode on the redacted sections. Specific data processing was applied to improve the legibility of the hidden writings (elemental ratios, statistical data reduction, multimodal images fusion, unmixing procedure; image treatments). This methodology successfully revealed the redacted contents of 8 letters, shedding new lights on Marie-Antoinette and Fersen relationship but also on the author of the redactions. It will also be of great interest for other historical and forensic cases involving the disentanglement of superimposed multi-elemental materials.</p>
