Auxiliary Euro-Calliope datasets: Spatio-temporal data representing national cooking demand and electric vehicle characteristic profiles in Europe

Output generated by the RAMP engine for use in the Sector-Coupled Euro-Calliope model. The three datasets in this repository are described briefly here and in more detail in the accompanying README files. Each dataset has an hourly temporal resolution spanning the years 2000 - 2018 (inclusive) and a national spatial resolution spanning 26* - 28** countries in Europe. All datasets are dimensionless; only the profile shapes are used in Euro-Calliope.

Cooking energy demand profiles (ramp-cooking-profiles): Profiles of heat energy demand for cooking in buildings in Europe, stochastically generated using the RAMP model [1]. These profiles are used to distribute annual cooking energy demand in the Euro-Calliope workflow. This dataset covers 28 European countries**.

Electric vehicle plug-in profiles (ramp-ev-plugin-profiles): Profiles of the percentage of parked electric vehicles, stochastically generated using the RAMP-Mobility model [2]. These profiles are used in Euro-Calliope to define the maximum number of electric vehicles that could be plugged in and therefore available to be charged at any given time, assuming controlled (or "smart") charging. This dataset covers 26 European countries*.

Electric vehicle energy consumption profiles (ramp-ev-consumption-profiles): Profiles of the electricity consumption of electric vehicles, stochastically generated using the RAMP-Mobility model [2]. These profiles are aggregated in Euro-Calliope to provide a required percentage of total vehicle electricity demand that must be met in each month. This dataset covers 26 European countries*.

* AUT, BEL, CHE, CZE, DEU, DNK, ESP, EST, FIN, FRA, GBR, HRV, HUN, IRL, ITA, LTU, LUX, LVA, NLD, NOR, POL, PRT, ROU, SVK, SVN, SWE

** (*) + BGR, SRB

*** ALB, MKD, GRC, CYP, BIH, MNE, ISL

[1] Lombardi, Francesco, Sergio Balderrama, Sylvain Quoilin, and Emanuela Colombo. 2019. ‘Generating High-Resolution Multi-Energy Load Profiles for Remote Areas with an Open-Source Stochastic Model’. Energy 177 (June): 433–44. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.energy.2019.04.097.

[2] Mangipinto, Andrea, Francesco Lombardi, Francesco Davide Sanvito, Matija Pavičević, Sylvain Quoilin, and Emanuela Colombo. 2022. ‘Impact of Mass-Scale Deployment of Electric Vehicles and Benefits of Smart Charging across All European Countries’. Applied Energy 312 (April): 118676. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.apenergy.2022.118676.

Calculation of parameter values based on observations for the herbaceous biomass plantation PFT representing Miscanthus in JSBACH3.2

This dataset provides the calculation of parameter values and the observational data that was collected from literature used in these calculations for the re-implementation of a herbaceous biomass plantation (HBP) PFT representing Miscanthus in the dynamic global vegetation model (DGVM) JSBACH3.2 (Egerer et al. subm., Nützel et al. in prep.). The parameters included are the maximum rubisco capacity (Vmax) at 25°C, the PEPcase CO2 specificity (k) and specific leaf area (SLA). Some of the observed parameter values were already compiled in a dataset by Li et al. (2018). These observations were therefore re-used in this dataset (which is specified within the dataset sheets) and complemented with additional observed values from literature that has become available since then or was not included in the study by Li et al. (2018). A detailed methodology of the parameter calculations for JSBACH3.2 can be found on the first sheet of the dataset.

LOBSTER (Ligand Overlays from Binding SiTe Ensemble Representatives)

LOBSTER ("Ligand Overlays from Binding SiTe Ensemble Representatives") is a dataset of ligand overlays designed to evaluate small molecule superposition tools.

Based on all structures from the RCSB PDB, the dataset generation and filtering protocols are fully automated to avoid subjectivity in the selection of protein-ligand complexes and to gain the largest possible set of refined compounds. Affinity and activity data have been processed to select ligands with a high ligand efficiency.
Ligands were superimposed in their crystal pose by aligning the corresponding binding pockets to so-called ensembles. For poses generated in benchmark experiments, this offers an objective comparison to the superimposed ligand crystal poses. A clustering of ensembles created with the same protein-ligand complexes ensures the diversity of the LOBSTER set.
The 671 ligand ensembles comprise a total of 3212 unique ligands from 3521 different protein-ligand complexes. A total of 72 734 ligand pairs have been derived from the ensembles. Ten subsets were generated from the pairs according to the shape overlap of the pairs, quantified by the Shape Tversky Index.

HelioSwarm Representative Trajectories

The HelioSwarm Flight Dynamics team prepares representative trajectories for use in mission planning. As these can be useful for developing analysis techniques, the HelioSwarm team provides these to the community. They are provided in the form of summary files which will eventually evolve to be similar to a product planned during science operations; however, both the contents and the details of the format are preliminary!

The exact configurations will change rapidly; in particular, the representative trajectories do not represent a prediction of actual positions during the mision.

If you use these configurations for any analysis, please make note of the file version number and the corresponding reference design. Current version 0.2.0 of the summary files uses Swarm Reference Design 5B, Flight System Transfer Trajectory 0x75b, dated 2024-06-24.

Most other details of the file format are in the CDF attributes.

Simulated forest dynamics (2016-2100) for six future climate-fire scenarios and five representative landscapes in Greater Yellowstone, USA
We simulated fire (incorporating fuels feedbacks) and forest dynamics on five landscapes spanning the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE) to ask: (1) How and where are forest landscapes likely to change with 21st-century warming and fire activity? (2) Are future forest changes gradual or abrupt, and do forest attributes change synchronously or sequentially? (3) Can forest declines be averted by mid-21st-century stabilization of atmospheric greenhouse gas (GHG) concentrations? We used the spatially explicit individual-based forest model iLand to track multiple attributes (forest extent, stand age, tree density, basal area, aboveground carbon stocks, dominant forest types, species occupancy) through 2100 for six climate scenarios. The five study landscapes are representative of dominant forest types and environmental gradients of the Northern Rockies; collectively, they encompass nearly 300,000 ha, of which 279,488 ha are potentially stockable with trees. This data set contains annual landscape-level output data for simulations to 2100 with 6 climate scenarios (3 general circulation models x 2 representative concentration pathways) x 5 landscapes x 20 iterations of simulated fires. We include the data and R scripts used for the analyses of abrupt change in the publication associated with these data; all other analyses used standard functions in R.

watercourse_100mseg: the Flemish watercourses represented by 100-meter line segments and corresponding downstream endpoints

The data source
watercourse_100mseg
is derived from the raw data source 'watercourses'. It represents all officially known watercourses of the Flemish Region as line segments of 100 m (or < 100 m, for the most upstream segment of a watercourse). The data source can be used as a base layer of statistical population units (line segments) and corresponding anchor points, in the design of monitoring and research of watercourses.

The data source is a GeoPackage with two spatial layers:

watercourse_100mseg_lines
: the line segments;

watercourse_100mseg_points
: the corresponding downstream endpoints ('downstream' as defined in
watercourses
).

The coordinate reference system is 'Belge 72 / Belgian Lambert 72' (EPSG-code 31370). Both layers have the same number of rows, and they share the same attributes:

rank
: a unique, incremental number for each segment/endpoint. It just reflects the downstream-to-upstream order of segments within each original line.

vhag_code
: the VHAG code from the raw
watercourses
data source. It distinguishes the different watercourses, so it is common to all segments/points that belong to the same watercourse.

This version was derived from version '
watercourses_20200807
' (Zenodo DOI) as follows:

each line ('watercourse') of
watercourses
is split into segments of 100 m, where the remaining segment of < 100 m (per original line) is situated most upstream. For this step, the direction of the lines has been reverted (in
watercourses
the direction is from upstream to downstream). A unique rank number is assigned to each segment, as well as the VHAG code from the corresponding line in
watercourses
.

the downstream endpoint of each segment is located, and assigned the same attributes (
rank
and
vhag_code
).

See R and GRASS code in the GitHub repository 'n2khab-preprocessing' at commit 6b1d8f7 for the creation from the
watercourses
data source.

A reading function to return the data source in a standardized way into the R environment is provided by the R-package n2khab.

Representative Counties of Germany and Their Structural Data

Content

A dataset of counties that are representative for Germany with regard to

the average disposable income,

the quota of divorces,

the respective quotas of employees working in the services (excluding logistics, security, and cleaning) and the MINT sectors,

the proportions of age groups in the total proportion of the respective population, with age groups in five-year strata for the population aged between 30 and 65 and the population in the age range between 65 and 75 each considered separately for the calculation of representativeness.

population density, if the benchmark is defined as the national average density weighted by county population. This value is calculated by averaging the population-per-square-kilometer figures of all German counties, weighted by the population size of each county. In contrast to a simple arithmetic mean of county-level densities, which would disproportionately reflect sparsely populated areas, this method reflects the actual density of the environments where people live. The resulting value for the selected counties falls within the 95% confidence interval of the national weighted average.

In addition, data from the four big cities Berlin, München (Munich), Hamburg, and Köln (Cologne) were collected and reflected in the dataset.

The dataset is based on the most recent data available at the time of the creation of the dataset, mainly deriving from 2022, as set out in detail in the readme.md file.

Method applied

The selection of the representative counties, as reflected in the dataset, was performed on the basis of official statistics with the aim of obtaining a confidence rate of 95%. The selection was based on a principal component analysis of the statistical data available for Germany and the addition of the regions with the lowest population density and the highest and lowest per capita disposable income. A check of the representativity of the selected counties was performed.

In the case of Leipzig, the city and the district had to be treated together, in deviation from the official territorial division, with respect to a specific use case of the data.

Omnibus Poll Ukraine - August 2023 (Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation + Razumkov Centre) – Random-sample questionnaire-based representative poll
This data collection offers a representative omnibus survey of the Ukrainian population, living in territories controlled by the Ukrainian government without ongoing armed hostilities. The survey was conducted by the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation together with the sociological service of the Razumkov Center from 09 to 15 August 2023. The survey was conducted using a stratified multi-stage sample. The structure of the sample reflects the demographic structure of the adult population of the surveyed territories as of the beginning of 2022 (by age, gender, type of settlement). 2019 respondents aged 18 and older were interviewed. The theoretical sampling error does not exceed 2.3%. At the same time, additional systematic sample deviations may be caused by the consequences of Russian aggression, in particular, the forced evacuation of millions of citizens. The survey covers five thematic fields: assessment of the current situation in the country, the Russian war of aggression, energy sector, corruption, volunteering. This data collection contains the original survey data. The SPSS file (.sav) is the original file provided by the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation. It has been exported into an Excel file. The content of the respective xlsx-file should be identical with the original sav-file. The sav-file contains the questions and answer options of the original questionnaire in Ukrainian. The original questionnaire and an English translation are also included in this data collection as separate pdf-file. Additionally, the data collection contains three files with "selected results" which document some major results of the survey in the form of analytical summaries and descriptive statistics: two in English, covering assessment of the current situation in the country + the Russian war of aggression as well as volunteering; one in Ukrainian covering corruption. New in version 1.1: The numbering of questions in the separate questionnaire (file "DIF_CR_0823-questionnaire-revised.pdf") has been adjusted to the numbering in the original data file ("DIF_CR_0823.sav"). A third file with "selected results" has been added. New in version 1.2: An English translation of the questionnaire has been added under "files".
