As a library, you want to remain relevant for state-of-the-art research and education. We need to not only implement existing projects but also explore the horizon of opportunities and threats that await us. The client for this project is Joeri Both.</p> <h2>Project Goal (Why and How)</h2> <ul> <li>This project provides input for the next multi-year plan, creating a roadmap with a horizon up to 2030.</li> <li>With this project, we aim to increase the knowledge level of the UB by identifying key innovative/disruptive developments, to become a full-fledged partner for providers of (new) technological applications.</li> <li>From there, we translate innovative developments/trends into UB practice in broad terms, offering suggestions for workable/realistic pilot projects that contribute to the UB ambitions for researchers.</li> <li>The approach is to deliver an innovation sub-report each month, including a podcast episode, with the aim of making innovation an actively discussed topic within the UB.</li> <li>This gives the management team insight into the wide range of possibilities and developments, allowing them to make strategic choices for starting pilots and better embedding the innovation process in the organization.</li> </ul> <h2>Project Scope (What is and isn't included)</h2> <p>Through interviews, we gather information and ideas from each department and external experts. This information is linked to the ambition themes in the multi-year plan, focusing mainly on technological developments and their impact on our work processes and product/service offerings. The collected information is available in the form of an audio recording/podcast and interview report. For the Research Support department, these ideas are further developed into pilot proposals on three implementation levels: short, medium, and long term. The interviews are scheduled per department, divided into the themes of the ambitions in the multi-year plan.</p> <h2>Episodes</h2> <ul> <li><a href="https://github.com/ubvu/ub2030/blob/main/ub2030-01-introductie/"><strong>Episode 01 -- Introduction</strong></a></li> <li><a href="https://github.com/ubvu/ub2030/blob/main/ub2030-02-rdm/"><strong>Episode 02 -- Future of Research Data Management and Research Software Management</strong></a></li> <li><a href="https://github.com/ubvu/ub2030/blob/main/ub2030-03-research_intelligence/"><strong>Episode 03 -- Future of Research Intelligence</strong></a></li> <li><a href="https://github.com/ubvu/ub2030/blob/main/ub2030-04-open_science/"><strong>Episode 04 -- Future of Open Science</strong></a></li> <li><a href="https://github.com/ubvu/ub2030/blob/main/ub2030-05-research_support/"><strong>Episode 05 -- Future of Research Support</strong></a></li> <li><a href="https://github.com/ubvu/ub2030/blob/main/ub2030-06-digital_services_and_infrastructures/"><strong>Episode 06 -- Future of Digital Services and Infrastructures</strong></a></li> <li><a href="https://github.com/ubvu/ub2030/blob/main/ub2030-07-education_support/"><strong>Episode 07 -- Future of Education Support</strong></a></li> <li><a href="https://github.com/ubvu/ub2030/blob/main/ub2030-08-special_collections/"><strong>Episode 08 -- Future of Special Collections</strong></a></li> <li><a href="https://github.com/ubvu/ub2030/blob/main/ub2030-09-information_services/"><strong>Episode 09 -- Future of Information Services (not public)</strong></a></li> <li><a href="https://github.com/ubvu/ub2030/blob/main/ub2030-10-library_desk_services/"><strong>Episode 10 -- Future of Library Desk Services</strong></a></li> <li><a href="https://github.com/ubvu/ub2030/blob/main/ub2030-11-aquisition_and_metadata/"><strong>Episode 11 -- Future of Acquisition and Metadata (canceled)</strong></a></li> <li><a href="https://github.com/ubvu/ub2030/blob/main/ub2030-12-society/"><strong>Episode 12 -- Future of the Library in Society</strong></a></li> <li><a href="https://github.com/ubvu/ub2030/blob/main/ub2030-bonus-01-desci/"><strong>Episode 13 -- BONUS DeSci: Future of Open Science Ecosystems</strong></a></li> </ul> <p><strong>Full Changelog</strong>: <a href="https://github.com/ubvu/ub2030/compare/v1.1...v1.6">https://github.com/ubvu/ub2030/compare/v1.1...v1.6</a></p>

Joint AstraZeneca-Cancer Research Horizons Functional Genomics Centre's CRISPRn library benchmark screens: gRNA counts and associated metadata

<p>Genome-wide CRISPR sgRNA libraries have emerged as transformative tools to systematically probe gene function. While these libraries have been iterated over time to be more efficient, their large size limits their use in some applications. Here, we benchmarked publicly available genome-wide single-targeting sgRNA libraries and evaluated dual targeting as a strategy for pooled CRISPR loss-of-function screens. We leveraged this data to design two minimal genome-wide human CRISPR-Cas9 libraries that are 50% smaller than other libraries and that preserve specificity and sensitivity, thus enabling broader deployment at scale.&nbsp;</p>

"I made the recording because Iam an amateur recording engineer and also work for a radio station. At the time, Iwas researching for a religious programme, for the radio and by pure chance and good luck, Iwas in the centre of York at the time the street preacher was there. Iam building up a personal library of 'ambient sounds' to use on various radio shows as 'sound effects'. The recording was taken outside St Helen's Church in St Helen's Square, in the centre of York. There was a fairly large crowd walking about, shopping. It was a Saturday. Some people were standing and listening to the man, some were mocking him, others didn't even notice. It was a sunny day, with a slight wind. St Helen's square is a large 'meeting place' for people with seats, flowers and usually musicians. I live in the centre of York and hear a lot of very interesting sounds there, everything from busking musicians, to many foreign languages, church bells, animals and much more. Ireally liked the recording of the preacher as it is quite clear that he passionately believes what he is saying. He was unaware that Iwas recording him. Iwish Ihad captured his whole sermon. He, and other members of his church visit the centre of York quite often, and preach there. Idon't know the name of his church." [Jools/vedas]19 in Collecting Sounds. Research Data Services in Academic Libraries: A Survey of North American Academic Libraries in 2019

<p>To determine the extent to which research data services (RDS) are supported in academic libraries and how that has changed over a decade, in 2019 a research team led by Carol Tenopir at the University of Tennessee Center for Information and Communication Studies, in collaboration with ACRL-Choice, surveyed academic library directors in the United States and Canada. This survey allowed us to compare results with a similar survey conducted in 2012. The goal of both studies was to discover the types of data services offered, the staffing deployed or anticipated for such services, the training necessary to support RDS, and RDS plans for the future.</p> <p>The associated white paper can be accessed at <a href="http://www.choice360.org/librarianship/whitepaper">http://www.choice360.org/librarianship/whitepaper</a> and downloaded at <a href="https://www.research.net/r/CHOICERDSWP">https://www.research.net/r/CHOICERDSWP</a></p>

Data from: Establishing a community-wide DNA barcode library as a new tool for arctic research

DNA sequences offer powerful tools for describing the members and interactions of natural communities. In this study, we establish the to-date most comprehensive library of DNA barcodes for a terrestrial site, including all known macroscopic animals and vascular plants of an intensively studied area of the High Arctic, the Zackenberg Valley in Northeast Greenland. To demonstrate its utility, we apply the library to identify nearly 20 000 arthropod individuals from two Malaise traps, each operated for two summers. Drawing on this material, we estimate the coverage of previous morphology-based species inventories, derive a snapshot of faunal turnover in space and time and describe the abundance and phenology of species in the rapidly changing arctic environment. Overall, 403 terrestrial animal and 160 vascular plant species were recorded by morphology-based techniques. DNA barcodes (CO1) offered high resolution in discriminating among the local animal taxa, with 92% of morphologically distinguishable taxa assigned to unique Barcode Index Numbers (BINs) and 93% to monophyletic clusters. For vascular plants, resolution was lower, with 54% of species forming monophyletic clusters based on barcode regions rbcLa and ITS2. Malaise catches revealed 122 BINs not detected by previous sampling and DNA barcoding. The insect community was dominated by a few highly abundant taxa. Even closely related taxa differed in phenology, emphasizing the need for species-level resolution when describing ongoing shifts in arctic communities and ecosystems. The DNA barcode library now established for Zackenberg offers new scope for such explorations, and for the detailed dissection of interspecific interactions throughout the community.

Is epistemological purism possible in Library and Information Science research?

<p><strong>Is epistemological purism possible in Library and Information Science research?</strong></p><p>Several scholars in Knowledge Organization (KO) and in Library and Information Science (LIS) have expressed concern that the field seems driven primarily by practical applications and professional practices. Others have stressed the need for research in the field to be more theoretically motivated, lest it continue to be perceived not as a scientific field but simply as a set of techniques used to solve problems. Hence, there have been calls for scholars and practitioners to make explicit the epistemological assumptions underlying methods used to design information services and tools for their users as this can help identify inherent biases.&nbsp;</p><p>In answer to these calls, we examined the epistemological assumptions underlying methods deployed in some fields of KO and LIS – namely information retrieval and topic mapping. A careful examination of the underlying assumptions to these methods showed that they exhibited epistemological hybridity, in this case, a combination of empiricism and positivism with a dash of pragmatism and hermeneutics at the end.&nbsp;</p><p>We therefore hypothesize that it may not be a straightforward task for a researcher or an information professional to claim that a method borrows solely from positivism, rationalism, empiricism or social-constructivism or historicism or hermeneutics, simply because there is a gap between epistemological theories and methods linked to them. Also, a given piece of work may deploy methods linked to different epistemological theories.</p><p>Although our examples are taken from LIS and KO fields, we suspect that our observations may be generalized to other scientific disciplines and fields of inquiry.</p>
