Little Rock Lake Experiment at North Temperate Lakes LTER: Physical Limnology 1983 - 2000

The Little Rock Acidification Experiment was a joint project involving the USEPA (Duluth Lab), University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, University of Wisconsin-Superior, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Little Rock Lake is a bi-lobed lake in Vilas County, Wisconsin, USA. In 1983 the lake was divided in half by an impermeable curtain and from 1984-1989 the northern basin of the lake was acidified with sulfuric acid in three two-year stages. The target pHs for 1984-5, 1986-7, and 1988-9 were 5.7, 5.2, and 4.7, respectively. Starting in 1990 the lake was allowed to recover naturally with the curtain still in place. Data were collected through 2000. The main objective was to understand the population, community, and ecosystem responses to whole-lake acidification. Funding for this project was provided by the USEPA and NSF. Parameters characterizing the physical limnology of the treatment (north basin, stations 1 and 3) and reference basin (south basin, station 2 and 4) are usually measured at one station in the deepest part of each basin (stations 1 and 2) at 0.5 to 1-m depth intervals depending on the parameter. Parameters measured at depth include water temperature, vertical penetration of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll and phaeopigments. Additional derived parameters include fraction of surface PAR at each depth and percent oxygen saturation. Auxiliary data include time of day, air temperature, cloud cover, and wind speed and direction and secchi depth. Sampling Frequency: varies - Number of sites: 4

Acoustic data and Loading Regime of Two Rock Physics Experiments carried out on INOVA-1000 test-complex, Borok, Russia

<p>Dataset linked to a manuscript under revision: <strong>"Source parameters of laboratory acoustic emission events estimated from the coda of waveforms"</strong>. Two experiments carried out on cilindrical samples (D30xH60mm) of Berea sandstone and granite of Voronezh crystal massif (Russia). Each experimental dataset contains: acoustic records from 16 sensors, the appearance of acoustic emission events during the experiment, velocities of P-waves changing in time, loading regime, i.e. confining pressure and axial loading curves, results of source characteristics analyses from coda-waves: corner frequencies, relative seismic moments and relative stress-drops. &nbsp;</p>

Rock physics models of gas hydrate bearing sediments – the classification, simulation workflow, and challenges

<p>This study reviews the rock physics models for simulating the elastic properties of gas hydrate bearing sediments. Considering that it is confusing to select the appropriate model for a specific study from the various models, we classify the models into five categories according to different principles. We also summarize a general workflow of the modeling process, elaborate the possible models in each step and bring up the potential sources of uncertainties. Besides, we explicate the general problems of the current models and raise several potential research directions. This study provides us a clear view of the rock physics models, the associated uncertainties, as well as the general modeling workflow of gas hydrate bearing sediments, and also provides some implications for future studies.</p>

Physical simulation of the influence of the original rock strength on the compaction characteristics of caving rock in longwall goaf

The compaction characteristics of broken rock in caving zone have a significant impact on the movement law of overburden and the prediction of surface subsidence. The mechanical properties of broken rock are clearly affected by the original rock strength of the roof. In this paper, the compaction mechanical behaviour of broken loose rock masses with different original rock strengths is studied by model testing. The results show that (1) the greater the original rock strength of broken rock is, the shorter the initial compaction stage, the earlier the transition compaction stage and stable compaction stage, and the lower the degree of compaction. (2) The initial deformation modulus and ultimate axial strain have a linear relationship with the original rock strength of broken rock. (3) Under different axial pressures, the deformation modulus increases with increasing original rock strength of the broken rock. The tangent modulus and axial stress change approximately linearly, the secant modulus and stress change linearly, and the tangent modulus and secant modulus have an exponential/hyperbolic relationship with strain.
