Sailing the Celestial Seas

Honorable mention in the 2023 IAU OAE Astrophotography Contest, category Still images with smartphones-mobile devices: Sailing the Celestial Seas, by Lucy Yunxi Hu.

In this black and white snapshot taken in April 2022 with a smartphone, a solitary boat rests on the shores of Lake Eucumbene, Australia, framed by the brilliant display of stars comprising the Milky Way. The prominent glow of the galactic centre stands out against the night sky, its intricate patterns of stars and nebulae casting a striking contrast. Each shimmering dot represents a distant sun, possibly orbited by uncharted planets, underscoring the vastness and complexity of our sprawling home galaxy. The photograph receives an honourable mention in the category of Still images taken exclusively with smartphones/mobile devices.

Credit: Lucy Yunxi Hu/IAU OAE (CC BY 4.0)

"I am a journalist myself, working for a public radio and television in the Netherlands. As a radio reporter Ivisited Bangladesh just after the cyclone Sidr hit the coastal area in November 1997 (…) Itravelled to the islands on a boat. On that boat were two boatmen and one of them started singing while we were sailing. As Igeotagged this song you can see exactly where it was. Iwas staying at that time in Pirojpur, took a taxi to the river and got a boat. Along tall typical motorboat. It was a journey of three-quarters of an hour during which he sang two songs." [DATA_SCIENCE] Interviews: The Secure Anonymised Information Linkage Databank (SAIL)

This is a set of interview transcripts executed by Niccolò Tempini between September 2015 and October 2016, as part of the ERC project "The Epistemology of Data-Intensive Science", and in the context of a case study of SAIL. Please read the "Notes on transcript editing" document for further information.

Two papers that specifically make use of these interviews have been published as of 2018:

Tempini, N., Leonelli, S., 2018. Concealment and discovery: The role of information security in biomedical data re-use. Soc Stud Sci 48, 663–690. https://doi.org/10.1177/0306312718804875

Tempini, N., 2016. Science Through the “Golden Security Triangle”: Information Security and Data Journeys in Data-intensive Biomedicine, in: Proceedings of the 37th International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS 2016). https://aisel.aisnet.org/icis2016/ISHealthcare/Presentations/20/

The transcripts document SAIL researchers' experience of infrastructure development and data curation and re-use practices. Researchers have consented to have these transcripts made available as Open Data. Other interviewees did not give consent, so those transcripts are held securely by the research team in Exeter.
You also find the information sheet provided to interviewees, which gives you the context for this project.
