Male (top right) and female (bottom left) start out by lying abdomen to abdomen but facing in opposite directions, with the male subsequently biting a tibia of the female's hind leg. He then curls his abdomen between her hind legs until making contact with the female's genitalia. The male's hooks serve to anchor and orient his genitalia in line with the female's genitalia (see Weissman et al. 2008 for more details).
