SERENA EJPSOIL PL SOC LOSS SOC CONTENT

General description of SERENA

The internal EJP SOIL project SERENA contributed to the evaluation of soil multifunctionality aiming at providing assessment tools for land planning and soil policies at different scales. By co-working with relevant stakeholders, the project provided co-developed indicators and associated cookbooks to assess and map them, to report both on soil degradation, soil-based ecosystem services and their bundles, under actual conditions and for climate and land-use changes, at the regional, national, and European scales.

Files description

Data was prepared as a result of SERENA EJP SOIL. The attached files are a part of the analysis of Assessment of Soil Threats and Ecosystem Services from each MS with the harmonized procedures. SERENA deliverable 3.3 (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.13991087). Data was prepared based on the DSM approach using QRF algorithm. We used over 40000 points to create maps of SOC content for 2018 and climate change RCP 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios (https://opendap.4tu.nl/thredds/catalog/data2/uuid/e940ec1a-71a0-449e-bbe3-29217f2ba31d/catalog.html) to predict SOC content for 2050.

SERENA EJPSOIL IT TUS SOC Loss SOC

The internal EJP SOIL project SERENA contributed to the evaluation of soil multifunctionality aiming at providing assessment tools for land planning and soil policies at different scales. By co-working with relevant stakeholders, the project provided co-developed indicators and associated cookbooks to assess and map them, to report both on soil degradation, soil-based ecosystem services and their bundles, under actual conditions and for climate and land-use changes, at the regional, national, and European scales.

The map is the result of applying the SOC loss cookbook developed in SERENA/EJP-Soil. It is based on Tuscany Region SOCdatabase (Gardin et al., 2021). Not freely available (Lamma Consortium). More information and requests to: info@lamma.toscana.it.

Three versions of the map were produced.

In versions v1 and v2, the dataset corresponds to a map of SOC concentrations for the Tuscany Region produced using a geostatistical approach. Ordinary kriging (Chilès & Delfiner, 2012) coupled with local geostatistics (LGS) was used to map SOC concentration (%) in the topsoil (0-30 cm) at a regional scale in the Tuscany Region (Italy). The map has a 50 m spatial resolution.

In version v3, a different approach to applying SOC loss cookbook was used. Particularly, Random Forest regression algorithm with numerous spatial covariates was applied for mapping SOC content (%) in the topsoil (0-30 cm) at regional scale in Tuscany Region (Italy). The map has a 100 m spatial resolution.

Global topsoil SOC stock from 1981 to 2018 estimated by combining process-based model and space-for-time digital soil mapping

This dataset include the topsoil (0-30cm) soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks in mineral soils under major land classes (forest, grassland, shrub land, savannas, cropland, cropland/natural vegetation mosaic, and sparely vegetated land) from 1981 to 2018. The long-time series of SOC stocks were estimated by using a space-for-time digital soil mapping (DSMst) model where the RothC-simulated SOC stocks were incorporated as one of the dynamic covariates of the DSMst model.

The detail information on the products were given below:

Name: DSMst-RothC 5-km global topsoil SOC stock products

Period: 1981-2018

Spatial resolution: 0.041666667 degree

Temporal resolution: 1 year

CRS: geographic latitude/longitude (EPSG:4326 - WGS 84 – Geographic)

Extent: -180°, -90°: 180°, 90°

Data format: GeoTIFF

Compression: LZW

Data type: Float32

Unit: t C ha-1

MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Porites biomass data in support of Edmunds and Putnam Roy. Soc. Biology Letters 2020
Growth was measured every two to four months following collection of genotypes of the coral Porites lobata and P. lutea from the back reef of Mo'orea, French Polynesia, in 2018. Measurements include size, bouyant weight, biomass and environment conditions. These data support a manuscript submitted by P. Edmunds and H. Putnam in 2020 to Royal Society Biology Letters titled 'Science-based approach to using growth rate to assess coral performance and restoration outcomes'. This material is based upon work supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation under Grant No. OCE 16-37396 (and earlier awards) as well as a generous gift from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Research was completed under permits issued by the French Polynesian Government (Délégation à la Recherche) and the Haut-commissariat de la République en Polynésie Francaise (DTRT) (Protocole d'Accueil 2005-2020). This work represents a contribution of the Moorea Coral Reef (MCR) LTER Site.
Supporting material for von Fromm et al (2024) Global synthesis of SOC abundance and persistence profile data

This file contains the supporting material for von Fromm et al (2024) Controls and relationships of soil organic carbon abundance and persistence vary across pedo-climatic regions published in Global Change Biology (https://doi.org/10.1111/gcb.17320).

The data comes originally from the International Soil Radiocarbon Database (ISRaD; https://soilradiocarbon.org/). We filtered the data and applied a mass-preserving spline function. For more details see the corresponding manuscript and the github repository (https://github.com/SophievF/Global_SOC_Abundance_Persistence).
