<p>SPARC Project: BostonFingerprints_2014<br> Principle Investigators: Joseph Bagley and Jennifer Poulsen<br> Contributors: Rachel Opitz (SPARC)</p> <p>Joseph Bagley and Jennifer Poulsen (Boston Landmarks Commission) and Rachel Opitz (SPARC researcher) used a structured light scanner to create detailed 3D models of ceramic artifacts featuring finger and hand prints from the Parker-Harris Pottery Site and Three Cranes tavern Site in Charlestown, Massachusetts. These sites were excavated in the early- and mid-1980s in advance of Boston&rsquo;s Big Dig as part of the Central Artery North Area, and are now listed in the National Register of Historic Places as part of the City Square Archaeological District. The Parker-Harris Pottery Site was the location of early coarse earthenware (redware) ceramic production in Boston. It was destroyed on June 17, 1775 by British troops who burned Charlestown as part of the Battle of Bunker Hill. The Three Cranes Tavern was founded in the former Great House of Governor John Winthrop in the center of Charlestown, only 100 meters from the Parker-Harris property. The tavern passed through a series of owners resulting in a near-continual use of the property as a Tavern for 140 years. During archaeological investigation numerous privies and features were identified with tightly-dated ceramic assemblages, including numerous coarse earthenwares with the distinct decorative elements of the Parker or Harris pottery. This project aimed to establish that biometric identifiers directly connect pottery from consumption sites to production sites when there are known sales between production and consumption sites, tightly dated deposits that limit association of pottery to specific potters, and a limited number of potters producing these vessels. This type of research could establish previously-unknown associations and commercial networks of domestic redware potters across the eastern United States. With data as unique and personal as a fingerprint, the results of this analysis brings a personal and evocative light to these significant assemblages, allowing the public to appreciate these forgotten and sometimes nameless potters through the intimate association of their hands.</p> <p>This project includes raw and processed data captured using a Breuckmann Smartscan HE structured light scanner with 250mm lenses using Optocat 2013 software. Sixty ceramics were scanned - 30 from Parker-Harris Kiln and 30 from Three Cranes Tavern.</p> <p>This upload contains the processed STL meshes for Parker-Harris 30 specifically (PH30) due to corruption in the file originally uploaded to this archive.</p> <p><strong>PLEASE NOTE:&nbsp;</strong>The original upload of STL files for PH 30 was corrupted. STL Fast Decompression Experiment Data for "Standing Shock Prevents Propagation of Sparks in Supersonic Explosive Flows"

<p><strong>Background</strong></p> <p>This data is camera images and&nbsp;pressure gauge and RF antenna voltage traces&nbsp;from rapid decompression shots at the STL&nbsp;shock tube facility.&nbsp;</p> <p>This data is used in figures 1, 2, 3, and 4&nbsp;and corresponds to the STL&nbsp;shots listed in table S1&nbsp;of the paper &quot;Standing Shock Prevents Propagation of Sparks in Supersonic Explosive Flows&quot;.</p> <p>Electric sparks and explosive flows have long been associated with each other. Flowing dust particles originate charge through contact and separate based on inertia, resulting in strong electric fields supporting sparks. These sparks can cause explosions in dusty environments, especially those rich in carbon, such as coal mines and grain elevators. Recent observations of explosive events in nature and decompression experiments indicate that supersonic flows of explosions may alter the electrical discharge process. Shocks may suppress parts of the hierarchy of the discharge phenomena, such as leaders. In our decompression experiments, a shock tube ejects a flow of gas and particles into an expansion chamber. We imaged an illuminated plume from the decompression of a mixture of argon and &lt;100&nbsp;mg&nbsp;of diamond particles and observe sparks occurring below the sharp boundary of a condensation cloud. We also performed hydrodynamics simulations of the decompression event that provide insight into the conditions supporting the observed behavior. Simulation results agree closely with the experimentally observed Mach disk shock shape and height. This represents direct evidence that the sparks are sculpted by the outflow. The spatial and temporal scale of the sparks transmit an impression of the shock tube flow, a connection that could enable novel instrumentation to diagnose currently inaccessible supersonic granular phenomena.</p> <p><strong>Accessing Data</strong></p> <p>The prefixes of the filenames correspond to the shot dates and approximate times listed in table S1 of the paper.&nbsp;</p> <p>The &quot;_SA4.zip&quot; and &quot;_SA3.zip&quot; files contains tiff images of the SA4 and SA3&nbsp;camera frames,&nbsp;respectively.&nbsp;The&nbsp;&quot;.cih&quot; file in each zip lists&nbsp;camera settings in plain text.</p> <p>The &quot;OscilloscopeData.zip&quot; contains files with prefixes corresponding to the shot dates and times listed in table and the diagnostic name.&nbsp;Files ending in &quot;.csv&quot; contain&nbsp;raw data and &quot;.pdf&quot; contain plots of the respective data. For pressure data, 1 V = 100 psi.</p>

STL files and data to support: Improvements in methods for measuring the volume conductivity of electrically conductive carbon powders

<p>Electrically conductive carbon powders are commonly used as filler materials in polymers to create electrically semi-conductive composite materials for use in battery electrodes and anti-static applications. Current methods for characterizing the conductivity of these powders use two pistons to compress the powders. Two-piston methods are known to underestimate conductivity. This study develops a guard-electrode method based on ASTM D257 to better characterize the bulk conductivity and impedance spectra of electrically conductive powders. The conductivity and impedance spectra of a highly conductive powder (copper powder) and a low conductivity powder (cellulose) were used to bound the conductivity of carbon black, graphite, and biochar. Powders were measured through a full range of compression with both the two-piston and the guard-electrode method. In all cases, measurements using the guard-electrode method have higher conductivity and lower impedance than the same powders measured using the two-piston method. The grain conductivity of the particles is obtained through fitting the relationship of conductivity versus packing fraction using the GEM equation. The guard-electrode method is shown to be more similar to established conductivity values as measured via a four-probe technique for copper and graphite then the two-piston method.</p>
