Salt River Wetlands denitrification rate, dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium rate, dissolved organic carbon concentration in June 2016 as well as soil porosity and bulk density

Raw and derived data used to calculate denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate to ammonium (DNRA) from push-pull experiments with added isotopically labelled nitrate. Experiments were conducted in 2016 in the Salt River Accidental Wetlands in three different patch types: Unvegetated, dominated by Ludwigia peploides, and dominated by Typha species (T. domingensis and T. latifolia). Data include start and end of incubation concentration of nitrate, ammonium, atom percent 15N in ammonium, dissolved organic carbon, excess mass 29-N2, and excess mass 30-N2. Soil data was collected from the same patch types including soil moisture, porosity, and bulk density.

Porewater nutrient concentrations in control and fertilized plots in a Spartina alterniflora-dominated salt marsh, North Inlet, Georgetown, SC : 1993-2025

Porewater nutrient concentrations were measured as a component of a long-term project seeking to understand how salt marsh primary production and sediment chemistry respond to anthropogenic (e.g. eutrophication) and natural (e.g. sea-level rise) environmental change. Feedbacks between plants, sediments, nutrients and flooding were investigated with particular attention to mechanisms that keep marshes in equilibrium with sea level. Other data collected as part of the project include aboveground macrophyte biomass, plant density, marsh surface elevation and annual above ground primary productivity. These data have been used to develop the Marsh Equilibrium Model, an important tool for coastal resource managers. Sampling occurred at Spartina alterniflora-dominated salt marsh sites in North Inlet, a relatively pristine estuary near Georgetown, SC on the SE coast of the United States. North Inlet is a tidally-dominated, bar-built estuary, with a semi-diurnal mixed tide and a tidal range of 1.4m. The 25-km2 estuary is comprised of about 20.5 km2 of intertidal salt marsh and mudflats, and 4.5 km2 of open water. Sampling began at two locations in December 1993, and at three additional locations in January 1994. Sampling occurred approximately monthly at these 5 locations through 2025. Sampling occurred at a sixth location from 2006 to 2010. The site was a dieback site that had recovered by 2010. At the other sites, the study is on-going. Porewater was collected at multiple depths from diffusion samplers and was analyzed for sulfide, salinity, ammonium, phosphate, and iron concentrations. There are five sampling locations at three sites. Two locations are in the low marsh; three locations are in the high marsh. One high marsh location had control sampling plots in addition to plots fertilized with nitrogen and phosphorus.

Dissolved organic carbon concentrations for seasonal synoptic sampling of 100 urban streams in Salt Lake City, Utah (USA) from 2022-2023

This dataset contains dissolved organic carbon concentrations from surface water samples collected at 100 urban stream locations in the greater Salt Lake City, Utah metropolitan area. Samples were collected four times (July 2022, October 2022, February 2023, and May 2023) to capture spatial and seasonal variation in DOC concentrations. Filtered stream samples were analyzed for dissolved organic carbon concentration. These data were collected as part of the Carbon in Urban Rivers Biogeochemistry (CURB) Project. Detailed field data and site data are published separately and can be linked using the “curbid” and “synoptic_event” columns in each dataset.

Major ion and nutrient concentrations of water-soluble salts leached from aeolian material, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (2013-2016)

To evaluate the role of Antarctic aeolian transport in surface chemistry homogenization, fifty-three samples of aeolian material from the McMurdo Dry Valleys region of Antarctica were collected and analyzed for water-soluble major ions and nutrients at a 1:5 sediment:water ratio. Samples were collected seasonally from Alatna Valley, Victoria Valley, Miers Valley, and Taylor Valley (Taylor Glacier, East Lake Bonney, F6 (Lake Fryxell), and Explorer’s Cove) at five heights (~5, 10, 20, 50, 100 cm) above the surface between 2013 and 2015. This data package is associated with Aeolian Material Transport and Its Role in Landscape Connectivity in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, published by Diaz et al. in 2018 (DOI: 10.1029/2017JF004589).

Data from: Increasing tidal inundation corresponds to rising porewater nutrient concentrations in a southeastern U.S. salt marsh

<p>Salt marshes are ecologically and economically important features of coastal environments that are vulnerable to sea level rise, the rate of which has accelerated in recent decades along the southeastern US Atlantic coast. Increased flooding frequency and duration across the marsh platform is predicted to impact vegetation community structure and overall marsh persistence, but the effect of changing inundation patterns on biogeochemical processes in marsh sediments remains largely unexplored. As part of a long-term monitoring effort to assess how marshes are responding to sea level rise in North Inlet estuary (South Carolina, USA), we collected data on porewater nutrient concentrations from a series of permanent monitoring plots across multiple transects spanning the marsh elevation gradient during the growing season from 2009 to 2019. Additionally, we calculated time inundated for each plot using local water level data and high-resolution elevation measurements to assess the change in time flooded at each plot. Our results indicate that both NH4 and PO4 nutrient concentrations have increased in most permanent plots over the 11-year study period and that nutrient concentrations are higher with increasing proximity to the creek. Spatial patterns in nutrient increases through time are coincident with considerable increases in tidal inundation observed over the marsh platform. Across plots located in the low marsh, porewater NH4 and PO4 concentrations have risen at average rates of 8.96 &micro;M/year and 0.86 &micro;M/year, respectively, and have reached rates as high as 27.25 &micro;M/year and 3.13 &micro;M/year. We suggest that increased inundation time due to rising sea level has altered biogeochemical conditions influencing nutrient availability in marsh porewater, resulting in increases that likely have relevance for larger scale nutrient cycles as well as marsh ecosystem stability and function.</p>

Atmospheric pollutant concentrations and leaf chemistry variables collected along gradients of median household income and traffic density in Salt Lake Valley, UT

<p>We utilize traffic density and <i>Convolvulus arvensis </i>leaf chemistry<i> </i>to understand spatial patterns linking atmospheric pollution and household income in the Salt Lake City metropolitan area, USA. We hypothesize that traffic density will explain variation in atmospheric NOx and O3 concentrations. In addition, we expect foliar <span>%N and nitrogen isotope ratios (</span>δ15N) to be elevated and carbon isotope ratios (δ13C) to be depleted on high traffic density roads<span>. These hypotheses were supported: we found the</span><span> highest</span><span> NOx and lowest O3 concentrations on high-traffic density roads. Also, NOx concentrations were higher in low-income neighborhoods. Low-income neighborhoods contained a greater density of high-traffic roads than high-income neighborhoods. Foliar %N was highest in low-income neighborhoods and was correlated with NOx and O3</span>, while δ15N was more depleted with increasing O3. These findings indicate that the distribution of high-traffic density roads plays a significant role in inequities in pollution exposure between high- and low-income neighborhoods, which is reflected in leaf chemistry.</p>
