<p>This data repository contains:</p> <ul> <li><span>"msats_growth_individuals.xlsx" - Microsatellite data (39 loci) of Antarctic fur seals<br></span></li> <li><span>"pup_growth_2017-2020.xlsx" - Birth weight and tagging weight data for pups collected in 2017-2020.<br></span></li> <li><span>"Rebeccas_Samples_Mendel_OriginalPedigree" - SNP array data (75k SNPs) in PLINK format for a subset of individuals<br></span></li> <li><span>"GrowthRM_BI1820_Day60.new.csv" - Repeated weight measures for a subset of individuals</span></li> </ul> <p><strong><br>Manuscript abstract</strong></p> <p><span>Inbreeding depression, the loss of offspring fitness due to consanguineous mating, is generally detrimental for individual performance and population viability.<span> </span>We therefore investigated inbreeding effects in a declining population of Antarctic fur seals (<em>Arctocephalus gazella</em>) at Bird Island, South Georgia.<span> </span>Here, localised warming has reduced the availability of the seal’s staple diet, Antarctic krill, leading to a temporal increase in the strength of selection against inbred offspring, which are increasingly failing to recruit into the adult breeding population.<span> </span>However, it remains unclear whether selection operates before or after nutritional independence at weaning.<span> </span>We therefore used microsatellite data from 885 pups and their mothers, and SNP array data from 98 mother-offspring pairs, to quantify the effects of individual and maternal inbreeding on three important neonatal fitness traits: birth mass, survival and growth.<span> </span>We did not find any clear or consistent effects of offspring or maternal inbreeding on any of these traits.<span> </span>This suggests that selection filters inbred individuals out of the population as juveniles during the time window between weaning and recruitment.<span> </span>Our study brings into focus a poorly understood life-history stage and emphasises the importance of understanding the ecology and threats facing juvenile pinnipeds.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Funding</span></strong></p> <p><span>This research was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) priority programme “Antarctic Research with Comparative Investigations in Arctic Ice Areas” SPP 1158 (project number 424119118) and the SFB TRR 212 (NC³) (Project Numbers 316099922 & 396774617). SEAL Substudy dataset on psychosocial consequences of liver screening
<p><strong>Background:</strong></p> <p>This data set comprises responses from n=487 patients who took part in a screening program for liver cirrhosis and fibrosis from January 2018 to February 2021 which was implemented as SEAL liver prevention program in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, Germany. The project was funded by the Innovation Fund of Federal Joint Committee of Germany, provided by Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (Funding ID: 01NVF16026).</p> <p>The SEAL program is a prospective study that aimed at evaluating a newly introduced medical screening method for early diagnosis of liver cirrhosis or fibrosis. Within this screening, patients who visited collaborating clinics or doctor's offices for a general health check-up (Check-Up 35), underwent a multistep screening (step 1: blood sample test and determination of risk score, step 2: enhanced laboratory diagnostics and ultrasound, step 3: liver biopsy and enhanced diagnostics in a specialized clinic). Inclusion criteria for study participation were a minimum age of 35 years and no known previous cirrhosis of liver.</p> <p><strong>Data collection:</strong></p> <p>In August 2019, we contacted all participants who had been included in the SEAL program so far. A total of n=5,935 patients were contacted via postal mailing which included a self-administered paper questionnaire, a patient information and an informed consent form. In sum, n=487 processsable questionnaires were returned. The data set contains processed data, so that used instruments were transformed according to guidelines, where available. The data set is completely anonymized.</p> <p><strong>Content:</strong></p> <p>The data set encompasses a context-adapted German version of the Psychological Consequences of Screening Questionnaire (PCQ) (Cockburn et al. 1992, Fichtner et al., 2022), the short form of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) (Marteau et al. 1992), a multimorbidity score (KOMO) (Glattacker et al. 2007), a health literacy instrument (HELP) (Farin et al. 2013), the Oslo Social Support Scale (OSSS-3) (Kocalevent et al. 2018), items to measure communication competences (KoKo) (Farin et al. 2014), the MacArthur Scale on Subjective Social Status (Adler et al. 2000) and items on satisfaction with healthcare (ZAP) (Bitzer et al. 1999). Furthermore, background information was collected: Household size, education, occupational status, age, sex, existence of a steady partnership, professional education, future screening attitudes, reception of test result and satisfaction with screening procedure and information on risk factors.</p>
Seasonal high-frequency measurements of discharge, water temperature, and specific conductivity from Lost Seal Stream at F3, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (1990-2023, ongoing)
As part of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, a systematic sampling program has been undertaken to monitor the glacial meltwater streams in that region. This package contains data pertaining to continuous monitored water quality and quantity parameters measured with automatic recording devices on streams in this region. Specifically, this metadata record describes the hydrology data set for the McMurdo Dry Valleys' Lost Seal Stream at F3, located in the Fryxell Basin of Taylor Valley. Measurements commenced during the 1990-91 season and is ongoing. This dataset extends through the first half of the 2022-23 field season.

Seals from the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin and their automated detection
<p>This repository is a first step towards the compilation of an Islamic seals database comprising the following components:</p> <p>- digital photos of pages with seals, retraceable to the original artifact.</p> <p>- cut-outs of seals.</p> <p>- scripts for aggregating these resources.</p> <p>- scripts for automatically identifying similar/same seals.</p> <p>This repository took the collection at the StaBi as a first case. As such, this repository can be used as a data set for training purposes.</p> <p><strong>Scripts for seal detection</strong></p> <p>This is very basic still, and the examples show how it can be build out in different directions. The seal was actually taken from an entirely different collection. It seems the seal itself is not in this collection (or not in this orientation?) but clearly it can already function somewhat as an archetype to catch any stamps. Note that it only highlights the most likely candidate on a page, hence its singling out of only one seal.</p> <p><strong>Images from the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin</strong></p> <p>These images were extracted from the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin digital collections website. They can be retraced to their origin as follows: the PPN number is an identification for the object. I also did some additional things to get everything working, for getting the right URLs and massaging the URLs into usable shapes.</p>

Weddell seal tracking data from the Weddell Sea (2011)
<p>This animation (.gif) comprises locations from 19 adult Weddell seals (<em>Leptonychotes weddellii</em>) instrumented in February 2011 with telemetry devices. These devices were Sea Mammal Research Unit Conductivity-Temperature-Depth Satellite Relay Data Loggers. These are animal-attached loggers that are manufactured and programmed by the Sea Mammal Research Unit Instrumentation Group at the University of St Andrews, Scotland. Ethical approval for this work was obtained from the University of St Andrews Animal Welfare and Ethics Committee, and from the corresponding committee at the British Antarctic Survey.</p> <p>This dataset is linked to the manuscript Photopoulou et al. 2020 "Sex-specific variation in the use of vertical habitat by a resident Antarctic top predator" Proceedings of the Royal Society B (http://dx.doi.org/10.1098/rspb.2020.1447) and a preprint on bioRxiv (https://doi.org/10.1101/2020.06.15.152009).</p> <p>The locations are the product of fitting a statistical model to the observed ARGOS location data, taking account of the error class. <p>The internal EJP SOIL project SERENA contributed to the evaluation of soil multifunctionality aiming at providing assessment tools for land planning and soil policies at different scales. By co-working with relevant stakeholders, the project provided co-developed indicators and associated cookbooks to assess and map them, to report both on soil degradation, soil-based ecosystem services and their bundles, under actual conditions and for climate and land-use changes, at the regional, national, and European scales.</p>
SERENA EJPSOIL IE WEXFORD SOIL SEALING
<p>The internal EJP SOIL project SERENA contributed to the evaluation of soil multifunctionality aiming at providing assessment tools for land planning and soil policies at different scales. By co-working with relevant stakeholders, the project provided co-developed indicators and associated cookbooks to assess and map them, to report both on soil degradation, soil-based ecosystem services and their bundles, under actual conditions and for climate and land-use changes, at the regional, national, and European scales.</p> <p><span>We conducted an analysis using the Level 1 version of the soil-sealing cookbook on Sentinel 2 tiles 29UPU and 29UPT, with a reference year of 2019. For this analysis, we used National Orthophotos and Google Satellite images to confirm/deny potential changes in soil sealing identified by cookbook methodology. The 2018 Copernicus Land Monitoring Service High Resolution Layer Imperviousness served as the baseline for soil sealing.</span></p>
