Organizing the fragmented landscape of multidisciplinary product development: A mapping of approaches, processes, methods and tools from the scientific literature - Searchable cartographies
<p>This document gathers cartographies for the development of mechatronic products, cyber-physical systems and smart products. The three cartographies presented are associated with an open-access article – see the citation box below – and differ from the ones provided in the article in that they are searchable, which makes it easier to pinpoint references, concepts and techniques. This document comprises a legend, the cartographies and a list of associated references. </p> <p>To contextualize the cartographies, the integration of digital and connectivity technologies in new products can invite companies to adapt their development. Organizing the fragmented landscape of multidisciplinary product development to help companies navigate the dense scientific literature corpus is a first step in supporting them in doing so. Multidisciplinary product development can be investigated by analyzing specific types of products that deal with both software and hardware development and can be referred to as cyber-physical systems, mechatronics, and smart products and systems in the literature. To support their development, 236 “concepts and techniques” (an expression that encompasses approaches, processes, methods and tools) were identified from 167 scientific papers through an extensive literature review and organized based on a four-level model paired with a decision tree. The mapping of the sorted concepts and techniques made it possible to generate graphical representations called “cartographies.” These cartographies represent a database of concepts and techniques for multidisciplinary product development and serve to support companies in their transformation from the product development perspective by providing them with a general overview of the related literature.</p>
Searchable Index of Metadata Aggregators
<p>Searchable Index of Metadata Aggregators is a database that stores general information of metadata aggregators. This database is accompanied with the “A WDS guide to Metadata Aggregators for Repository Managers”. The Searchable Index of Metadata Aggregators is an up-to-date catalogue of Dataset Metadata Aggregators (DMAs), implemented as an access database. It was designed to fill in a gap found by the Harvestable Metadata Services Working Group (HMetS-WG) members of the World Data System’s International Technology Office (WDS-ITO). These include up-to-date resources giving an overview of current infrastructures used to syndicate dataset metadata. The database contains information on DMA's supported metadata standards and software interfaces, as well as documentation on how to be aggregated by each.</p> <p>The WDS Guide to Metadata Aggregators is a guidance document for the associated Searchable Index of Metadata Aggregators. We have defined DMAs as federated service infrastructures that foster the findability and accessibility of data products by enabling access to multiple, distributed metadata records via a single search interface. This guide gives a description of this catalogue and general guidance on how to use it. In the sections that follow, we give a short background to the Harvestable Metadata Services-Working Group project. Then, we outline the project's research methodology and the properties of the searchable index. Finally, we discuss this project's limitations, as well as its future development. Providing metadata to aggregators can significantly improve the findability of research data products.</p> <p>Together, this guidance document and dataset package are designed to provide research data repository managers with options for participation in federated research data systems, and support institutional repositories' harvestable metadata service implementation strategies. In addition, as developers in the global research data management community seek to create pathways and workflows across data, software and compute resources, we anticipate that they're likely to prioritize connecting sites, organizations and services that have already done a lot of work harmonizing content from disparate providers. In this context, this resource will be helpful for creating roadmaps and implementation plans for integration across science clouds.</p>

Understanding multidisciplinary product development through a synthesis mapping of approaches, processes, methods and tools from the scientific literature - Searchable map
<p>This document introduces a synthesis map of approaches, processes, methods and tools for multidisciplinary product development. The presented map is associated with an open-access article – see the citation box below – and differs from the one provided in the article in that it is searchable, which makes it easier to pinpoint the approaches, processes, methods and tools. This document comprises a legend and the map. </p> <p>To contextualize the map, multidisciplinary products arise from the integration of contributions from mechanical, electrical, electronics, software, and broadly information and communication technologies. <br>This “multidisciplinarity” implies a higher technical and organizational complexity that can invite companies to adapt their development. To support companies in the adaptation of their development and navigate the dense and fragmented scientific literature corpus on multidisciplinary product development, the authors proposed to graphically organize it.</p> <p>In a first phase, multidisciplinary product development was investigated by analyzing three specific types of multidisciplinary products that can be referred to as “cyber-physical systems”, “mechatronics”, and “smart products and systems” in the literature. This first phase led to three maps which graphically organized a total of 236 “concepts and techniques” identified from 167 scientific papers through an extensive literature review and categorized based on a four-level model paired with a decision tree. A second phase, which result is represented below, introduced some simplifications and filters to the initial maps, which narrow down the number of concepts and techniques to 56. The following map represents a preliminary database of concepts and techniques for multidisciplinary product development and serves to support companies in their transformation from the product development perspective by providing them with a synthesized overview of the related literature. This work is particularly suited for companies and researchers looking for getting acquainted with the scientific literature related to multidisciplinary product development and how the different concepts and techniques can be associated.</p>
