Integration of serial sensory information in haptic perception of softness

Redundant estimates of an environmental property derived simultaneously from different senses or cues are typically integrated according to the Maximum Likelihood Estimation model (MLE): Sensory estimates are weighted according to their reliabilities, maximizing the percept"s reliability. Mechanisms underlying the integration of sequentially derived estimates from one sense are less clear. Here we investigate the integration of seriallysampled redundant information in softness perception. We developed a method to manipulate haptically perceived softness of silicone rubber stimuli during bare finger exploration. We then manipulated softness estimates derived from single movement segments (indentations) in a multi-segmented exploration to assess their contributions to the overall percept. Participants explored two stimuli in sequence, using 2-5 indentations and reported which stimulus felt softer. Estimates of the first stimulus' softness contributed to the judgments similarly, whereas for the second stimulus estimates from later as compared to earlier indentations contributed less. In line with unequal weighting, the percept"s reliability increased with increasing exploration length less than predicted by the MLE model. This pattern of results is well explained by assuming that the representation of the first stimulus fades when the second stimulus is explored, which fits with a neurophysiological model of perceptual decisions (Deco et al., 2010).

There are zip files for every experiment (1 & 2a-d), which contain all data relative to the publication. The data of each participant is contained in a separate folder. This folder contains a *.raw file for each session of the experiment and a "data" folder, which contains movement trajectories (*.trj files) and the staircase reversals for each condition (*.pse files) in separate folders for each session. In every experiment folder there is a list of trials which were excluded from the analyses.

Variables of Experiment 1 are described in the file VARIABLE_CODES_EXP1.txt and the variables of Experiment 2a-d are described in the file VARIABLE_CODES_EXP2.txt.

Data from: Sensory perception of rivals has trait-dependent effects on plasticity in Drosophila melanogaster

The social environment has myriad effects on individuals, altering reproduction, immune function, cognition, and aging. Phenotypic plasticity enables animals to respond to heterogeneous environments such as the social environment but requires that they assess those environments accurately. It has been suggested that combinations of sensory cues allow animals to respond rapidly and accurately to changeable environments, but it is unclear whether the same sensory inputs are required in all traits that respond to a particular environmental cue. Drosophila melanogaster males, in the presence of rival males, exhibit a consistent behavioral response by extending mating duration. However, exposure to a rival also results in a reduction in their lifespan, a phenomenon interpreted as a trade-off associated with sperm competition strategies. D. melanogaster perceive their rivals by using multiple sensory cues; interfering with at least two of olfactory, auditory, or tactile cues eliminates the extension of mating duration. Here we assessed whether these same cues were implicated in the lifespan reduction. Removal of combinations of auditory and olfactory cues removed the extended mating duration response to a rival, as previously found. However, we found that these manipulations did not alter the reduction in lifespan of males exposed to rivals or induce any changes in activity patterns, grooming or male-male aggression. Therefore, our analysis suggests that lifespan reduction is not a cost associated with the behavioral responses to sperm competition. Moreover, this highlights the trait-specific nature of the mechanisms underlying plasticity in response to the same environmental conditions.

How Absence Seizures Impair Sensory Perception: Insights from Awake fMRI and Simulation Studies in Rats

This repository contains measured and simulated data for the manuscript titled "How Absence Seizures Impair Sensory Perception: Insights from Awake fMRI and Simulation Studies in Rats" by Stenroos P. et al. Electroencephalographic (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data was recorded simultaneously from awake GAERS; a rat model of absence epilepsy. Visual and whisker stimulation was experimentally applied, and visual stimulation was simulated during interictal and ictal states and whole brain hemodynamic and neural responsiveness was compared between states.

Vape flavorants dull sensory perception and cause hyperactivity in developing zebrafish embryos

E-cigarette use (vaping) during pregnancy has been increasing, and the potential exists for the developing brain in utero to be exposed to chemical constituents in the vape. Vapes come in over 7,000 unique flavors with and without nicotine, and while nicotine is a known neurotoxicant, the effects of vape flavoring alone, in the absence of nicotine, on brain function are not well understood. Here we performed a screen of vape aerosol extracts (VAEs) to determine the potential for prenatal neurotoxicity using the zebrafish embryo photomotor response (PMR) – a translational biosensor of neurobehavioral effects. We screened three commonly used aerosolized vape liquids (flavored and flavorless) either with or without nicotine. No neurobehavioral effects were detected in flavorless, nicotine-free VAEs, while the addition of nicotine to this VAE dulled sensory perception. Flavored nicotine-free VAEs also dulled sensory perception and caused hyperactivity in zebrafish embryos. The combination of flavor and nicotine produced largely additive effects. Flavored VAEs without nicotine had similar neuroactive potency as nicotine. Similar effects were also seen in embryos exposed to the pure flavoring compound, cinnamaldehyde. Together, using zebrafish PMR as a high throughput translational behavioral model for prenatal exposure, our results demonstrate that e-cigarette flavorants that we screened elicit neurobehavioral effects worthy of further investigation for long-term neurotoxic potential, and also have the potential to modulate nicotine impact on the developing brain.
