Soil Physical Data from the Taylor Slough, within Everglades National Park (FCE), from September 1999 to November 2006

Soil pH, Eh and temperature readings are taken at TS/Ph1b,TS/Ph2,TS/Ph3 and TS/Ph6b. These measurements are taken only when the marsh is wet. Measurements are taken using an Orion model 250A meter, and the probes attached to the meter are the Orion Thermo pH probe and the Orion Eh probe. All readings are recorded in field notebooks, and then transferred into Microsoft Excel. The Eh reading is taken when the Eh probe is attached to the meter and the word "Ready" appears on the meter screen. The pH and temperature reading are taken when the pH probe is attached to the meter and the word "Ready" appears on the meter screen.

This dataset contains the phenological stages of Equisetum arvense (horsetails) subjected to snow removal in spring (which led to ground warming) and to air warming using open topped chambers in a two by two factorial experiment. The main dataset contains the phenological phases of plants in plots of subjected to the four treatments between 1 May and 29 September 2023, and height data. Supplementary files contain temperature data for dataloggers placed in the soil and in the air and file information.

Water Quality Data (Grab Samples) from the Taylor Slough, Everglades National Park (FCE), Florida, USA, September 1999 - ongoing

Water quality samples are being collected using ISCO autosamplers at all wetland sites (that is, all sites except TS/Ph-9, 10, and 11). The autosamplers contain 24 1L bottles. Water is sampled by programming the autosamplers to take composite samples once every 3 days. These samples are a composite of four 250mL subsamples drawn every 18 hours (a sampling scheme that captures a dawn, noon, dusk, and midnight sample in every three day composite). The samples are collected every 3-4 weeks and analyzed for total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), and salinity. When sites are visited to collect these samples, we also collect a grab sample that is immediately put on ice. A portion of these grab samples is filtered through a Whatman GF/F filter immediately upon return to the lab, and the filtered samples are analyzed for inorganic nutrients such as NO2-, NO3-, NH4+, SRP, and DOC. The unfiltered fraction of these grab samples is analyzed for TP, TN, and TOC. We use these montly grab samples to generate relationships between TP and SRP, and between TN and NO2- + NO3- + NH4+. Dissolved nutrients are measured using standard rapid flow analyzer (RFA) techniques. TP is analyzed with a modified Solorzano and Sharp (1980) technique. TN is measured with an Antec TN analyzer, TOC and DOC are quantified on a Shimadzu TOC Analyzer, and salinity is measured with a YSI conductivity meter. In addition to the regular water quality monitoring, we use the rain level actuators at all freshwater sites to trigger water sampling after rain events exceed a given threshold of duration and/or intensity. As currently programmed, when the threshold of = 2.5 cm of rain per hour is passed, the autosampler at that site collects a 500mL sample 30 minutes after the threshold has been reached. Rain event samples are collected, treated, and analyzed as all other water quality samples.

Florida Bay Braun Blanquet, Everglades National Park (FCE LTER), South Florida, USA, September 2000 - ongoing

Braun Blanquet surveys determining frequency, abundance, and density for seagrass and macroalgae made during visits to TS/Ph (7a, 8, 9, 10, and 11) and Rabbit Key. Our long term research program focuses on the following central objective: Regional processes mediated by water flow control population and ecosystem level dynamics at any location within the coastal Everglades landscape. This phenomenon is best exemplified in the dynamics of an estuarine oligohaline zone where fresh water draining phosphorus-limited Everglades marshes mixes with water from the more nitrogen-limited coastal ocean. Fish and consumer data collected from Northeast Shark Slough, Everglades National Park (FCE) from September 2006 to September 2008

Three 1m2 throwtrap sites were selected randomly within a few meters of the location. All fish and macroinvertebrates were sampled within each trap using a seine; the trap is determined to be clear of fish and macroinvertebrates once three empty seines are recovered. The count is reset whenever a fish or invertebrate is caught. Once the trap is determined to be clear, five sweeps are done using a couple of nets. The count resets whenever fish is caught, while an extra sweep is added whenever an invertebrate is captured. The trap is finally cleared once the fifth sweep doesn't capture any organisms. All captured organisms are anesthesized in a plastic cup filled with water and MS222; they are then preserved using a 10% formaldehyde solution for identification and archiving in the lab

Periphyton and Associated Environmental Data Relative from Samples Collected from the Greater Everglades, Florida, USA from September 2005 to November 2014

This data package contains peripihyton and environmental data collected annually during the wet season between 2005 and 2014 from sites distributed throughout the greater Everglades ecosystem. This project is part of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Program's Monitoring and Assessment Plan intended to document baseline variability in periphyton attributes for assessing the effectiveness of restoration projects. A total of 200 primary sampling units (PSU) of 800 m x 800 m are nested in 32 landscape units and each year, random coordinates are 'drawn' within each PSU and one sampleable draw is visited in each. Sampled periphyton is processed for diatoms, slides are prepared, and 500 frustules are enumerated and identified to the lowest possible taxonomic resolution per slide. Taxon abundances are then relativized to the total count. These data accompany environmental, periphyton biomass, and soft algal abundance datasets.

Vegetation data collected from Northeast Shark River Slough, Everglades National Park, Florida, USA, September 2006 - April 2025

This project was established in 2006 to document the pattern of abundance of key ecological indicators (e.g., surface water, soil, floc, periphyton and sawgrass) across the NESRS landscape. A total of 30 sites were established and monitored in 2006, 2007 and 2008. After the completion of 1-mile bridge in 2012, additional 10 new sites were established to observe the ecological impact of 1-mile bridge (known as Bridge & Census sites). In 2015, additional 40 sites were established along eight transects (T1-T8, known as near canal sites) in ENP marshes starting at, and roughly perpendicular to the L-29 canal. The purpose of these sites was to monitor the potential effects of Modified Water Deliveries (MWD) operations on changing nutrient concentrations and ratios in key ecological compartments due to increased downstream discharges from the L-29 canal beneath the 1-mile and 2.6-mile bridges and culverts along Tamiami Trail. Data collection is complete.

DOM composition changes in Altamaha River and Sapelo Sound estuaries measured by FT-ICR mass spectrometry from September 2015 to September 2016

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a large and complex mixture of compounds with source inputs that differ with location, season and environmental conditions. Here, we investigated drivers of DOM composition changes in a marsh-dominated estuary off the southeastern U.S. Monthly water samples were collected at a riverine and estuarine site from September 2015 to September 2016, and bulk, optical, and molecular analyses were conducted on samples before and after dark incubations. Results showed that river discharge was the primary driver changing the DOM composition at the mouth of the Altamaha River. For discharge higher than ~ 150 m3 s-1, DOC concentrations and the terrigenous character of the DOM increased approximately linearly with river flow. For low discharge conditions, a clear signature of salt marsh-derived compounds was observed in the river. At the head of Sapelo Sound, changes in DOM composition were primarily driven by river discharge and possibly by summer algae blooms. Microbial consumption of DOC was larger during periods of high discharge at both sites, potentially due to the higher mobilization and influx of fresh material to the system. The Georgia coast was hit by Hurricane Matthew in October 2016, which resulted in a large input of carbon to the estuary. The DOC concentration was ~ 2 times higher and DOM composition was more aromatic with a stronger terrigenous signature compared to the seasonal maximum observed earlier in the year during peak river discharge conditions. This suggests that extreme events notably impact DOM quantity and quality in estuarine regions.

Macrozoobenthos GeoEcoMar DOORS September 2023

<p>The dataset contains macrozoobenthos data collected during the MN248 Cruise, from 3 stations located in the Romanian Black Sea area, in 1-10 September 2023, in the framework H2020 DOORS Project. &nbsp;The main goal of the cruise was to assess the sediment nutrients cycling capacity and the influence of faunal activity on benthic turnover rates of nutrient and oxygen through ex-situ sediment core incubation. The data acquisitions was focused on three main benthic habitats, as follows: coarse and mixed biogenic type of substrata suitable for thriving of mussel&rsquo;s biogenic reefs and mud sediments under river plume influence. From each station, three replicates were collected with the Multicorer (the sampling size - 0.079 m2) and three with Van-Veen grab (the grasping area &nbsp;- &nbsp;0.125 m2). The sediment was preserved in buffered formalin 4% , then sieved through a 1 mm and 0.5 mm mesh sieve and subsequently stored in 70% ethanol. The database comprises taxonomic and quantitative data (density and wet weight biomass per square meter) for 69 macrozoobenthic species and 2 supraspecific groups.</p>
