Indicative distribution map for Ecosystem Functional Group M1.4 Shellfish beds and reefs
<p>This archive contains indicative distribution maps and profiles for <strong>M1.4 Shellfish beds and reefs</strong>, a ecosystem functional group (EFG, level 3) of the <a href="https://global-ecosystems.org/">IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology</a> (v2.0). Please refer to Keith <em>et al.</em> (2020) for details.</p> <p>The descriptive profiles provide brief summaries of key ecological traits and processes, maps are indicative of global distribution patterns, and are not intended to represent fine-scale patterns. The maps show areas of the world containing major (value of 1, coloured red) or minor occurrences (value of 2, coloured yellow) of each ecosystem functional group. Minor occurrences are areas where an ecosystem functional group is scattered in patches within matrices of other ecosystem functional groups or where they occur in substantial areas, but only within a segment of a larger region. Given bounds of resolution and accuracy of source data, the maps should be used to query which EFG are likely to occur within areas, rather than which occur at particular point locations. Detailed methods and references for the maps are included in the profile (xml format).</p>

Stable isotopes reveal intertidal fish and crabs use shellfish farms as foraging habitat in Puget Sound, Washington
<p>This is the dataset used for my second thesis chapter. The data consists of carbon and nitrogen stable isotope data collected in 3 locations in North Puget Sound in 2020-2022. Locations are Samish Bay, Padilla Bay, and Drayton Harbor. Stable isotope data is presented in standard permil format, with values referenced from the Vienna Pee Dee Belemnite and atmospheric nitrogen standards, which are the international reference standards commonly used as isotopic references for carbon and nitrogen. </p> <p>Primary productivity samples, snails, oysters, and clams were collected by hand at low tide. Fish and crabs were collected via beach seine and crab pots deployed concurrently with seining. </p> <p>Samples were collected either within bivalve farms, or within eelgrass meadow reference sites outside of farmed areas.</p> <p>All code and data necessary to reproduce the analysis is available via my Github page. </p> <p>The metadata spreadsheet contains descriptions of each column in the datasheet.</p> <p>For more information, see my chapter 2 thesis.</p>

Coopetition as an ecological dynamic: interactions between dense seasonal macroalgal mats and oysters on temperate shellfish reefs
<p>We document the proliferation of dense algal mats on intertidal oyster reefs in the Southeastern USA. We also use data from a small field experiment to understand the effects that oysters have on macroalgae. The data and code included here can be used to replicate all analyses and figures in the manuscript.</p>
Carbon and Nitrogen content of intertidal shellfish sandbanks sediment samples within Ría de Arousa, Spain
<p>The GEOMA Research group from the University of Vigo implements a solution to improve the knowledge of the sediment dynamics, the stability of the ecosystem substratum, and its response to the predicted Climate Change outcome (INTERM). The INTERM solution is based on sedimentological monitoring of sandbanks at specific locations of clam exploitation in the Ría de Arousa (Pontevedra, Spain).</p> <p>Here we show the results of the elemental analysis (total and inorganic carbon and nitrogen) carried out on the bulk fraction of sediment samples collected in five locations with current (Camaxe, Xastelas, O Sarrido, and O Bohido) or stopped (Lombos de Ulla) shellfish activity. Shellfish aquaculture farms as foraging habitat for nearshore fishes and crabs
<p>This is the dataset used for the analysis in our paper. The file contains species counts and behavior classifications of nearshore fish and crabs taken from time-lapse underwater video. Also included are habitat transect data from each site. Presence/absence of zostera marina and zostera japonica eelgrass, algae, as well as eelgrass metrics were quantified in the transects.</p> <p>The metadata spreadsheet contains descriptions of each column in the datasheet.</p> <p>This data was collected at shellfish aquaculture farm sites across Puget Sound, Washington, USA in 2017, 2018, and 2019 using underwater timelapse video cameras and habitat transects.</p> <p>Transects were done with 1/4 meter^2 quadrat divided into 25 10x10cm^2 squares, each quadrat was measured 5 times along a 30 meter line parallel to shore.</p> <p>Video was recorded in 2 minute lengths every 10 minutes starting 1 hour before high tide, going to 1 hour after high tide, using cameras positioned approximately 18 inches off the substrate. PVC stakes were used to mark a 1 meter square of camera visibility and organisms observed within that 1 meter square were recorded. </p> <p>For more information, see my chapter 1 thesis.</p>

Human-wildlife interactions on the tidal flats of the Bijagós archipelago: does shellfishing affect migratory shorebirds?
<p>The Bijagós archipelago in West Africa is home to an ethnic group with a rich cultural heritage that is tightly linked to nature. The Bijagós people have a shared cultural identity, but across islands, there are different resource management regimes stemming from island-specific context with regards to socio-political organization and strength of cultural heritage. Across the archipelago, bivalves harvested manually from the mudflats are an important part of the Bijagós people's diet, economy, and culture. Thousands of migratory shorebirds share the use of these mudflats during their non-breeding season, consuming macrobenthos such as crustaceans and bivalves, including those harvested by local people. At the end of their stay in the Bijagós, shorebirds need to fuel for their migratory flight in order to return to their breeding areas, being particularly important during this period that they have access to undisturbed feeding areas with suitable food resources.</p> <p>In this study, we start by exploring shellfishing patterns across different management regimes, then assess seasonal variation in the direct impact of shellfishing on shorebirds (through competition for resources and space), and finally quantify the indirect impact of sediment disturbance due to shellfishing upon shorebird prey availability. Results indicate that bivalve resources are better managed in areas with formal protection, while traditional management based on cultural beliefs results in poorer stock conditions. Interestingly, across islands shellfishing activity is concentrated in mid-winter, decreasing towards shorebirds' fuelling period, when they benefit the most from reduced disturbance on the mudflats. No direct competition for resources was detected, as collected bivalves were significantly larger than those consumed by shorebirds, regardless of the season. Indirect impacts caused by sediment disturbance during shellfishing were also mostly absent, causing only a small reduction on shorebirds prey density, but with no effect on the available biomass.</p>

Pelletizing of agricultural lime obtained from shellfish (mussel) shells
<p>The dataset documents the results from the process of preparing agricultural lime (primarily calcium carbonate) pellets for application in the agricultural industry, and to determine the best processing methods for i) size reduction of the lime and ii) the appropriate preparation methods of the lime pellets using agglomeration. The data set is from a thesis on the re-utilization of by-products that originate in aquaculture in other agricultural sectors. </p>
