10-day backward trajectories from ECMWF analysis data along the ship track of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition in austral summer 2016/2017.
<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>This dataset contains 10-day backward trajectories along the ship track of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition from Nov 2016 – April 2017 calculated with the Lagrangian analysis tool LAGRANTO using the 3D-wind fields from the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) operational analysis data. Five-minute average cruise track and ship velocity of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) undertaken during the austral summer of 2016/2017.
<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>The ship's cruise track, velocity, course over ground and heading at one-minute resolution for all five legs of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) are derived from a combination of:<br> - the latitude/longitude record of the Quality-checked, one-second cruise track for 21.12.2016 to 11.04.2017.<br> - the latitude/longitude record of the Uncorrected inertial navigation dataset (one-second resolution) for 27.11.2016 to 21.12.2016<br> - the latitude/longitude record of the raw meteorological data (30-second resolution) from 17.11.2016 to 27.11.2016<br> - where no latitude/longitude record at one-second resolution is available and the ship's velocity was above 2 meters per second, the three-second resolution record of the true and relative wind speed and direction, as well as the heading are used to re-calculate the ship's velocity under the assumption that the course of the ship equalled the heading.</p> <p>Basic filtering are applied to remove erroneous observations before the data are averaged to a one-minute resolution (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.3752667).<br> The one-minute time series are averaged to five-minute resolution, whereby the vector averaging is used for the platform velocity and orientation.<br> For the latitude and longitude coordinates a simple average is calcualted, i.e., ignoring the curvature of the Earth.<br> Short stretches of missing coordinates are filled with linear interpolation between neighbouring observations.</p> <p><strong>Dataset contents</strong></p> <ul> <li>cruise-track-5min-legs0-4.csv, data file, comma-separated values</li> <li>data_file_header, metadata, text format</li> <li>README.txt, metadata, text format</li> <li>ace-cruise-track-5min-legs0-4-change-log.txt, metadata, text format</li> </ul> <p><strong>Change log</strong></p> <p><strong>v1.1</strong> - Added additional data coverage from 2016-11-17 - 2016-11-22 inclusive. Properties of identified ship tracks
<p>The ship track database of is used, which used "day microphysics" images comprised of a composite of visible, near and thermal infrared channels were used to manually locate likely positions of ship tracks. Identification was assisted by examining the CDNC, calculated from the MYD06 level 2 cloud retrieval products from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard the Aqua satellite. The CDNC is calculated based on the adiabatic assumption, using the cloud optical depth and cloud effective radius from the MODIS MYD06 level 2 product.</p><p>Ship locations were sourced from their automatic identification system (AIS) data, allowing an observed ship track to be linked to the generating ship. CloudTracks: A Dataset for Localizing Ship Tracks in Satellite Images of Clouds
<p>The CloudTracks dataset consists of 1,780 MODIS satellite images hand-labeled for the presence of more than 12,000 ship tracks. More information about how the dataset was constructed may be found at <a href="http://github.com/stanfordmlgroup/CloudTracks">github.com/stanfordmlgroup/CloudTracks</a>. The file structure of the dataset is as follows:</p><p>CloudTracks/<br> full/<br> images/<br> (sample image name) mod2002121.1920D.png<br> jsons/<br> (sample json name) mod2002121.1920D.json</p><p>The naming convention is as follows:<br>mod2002121.1920D: the first 3 letters specify which of the sensors on the two MODIS satellites captured the image, mod for Terra and myd for Aqua. This is followed by a 4 digit year (2002) and a 3 digit day of the year (121). The following 4 digits specify the time of day (1920; 24 hour format in the UTC timezone), followed by D or N for Day or Night.</p><p>The 1,780 MODIS Terra and Aqua images were collected between 2002 and 2021 inclusive over various stratocumulus cloud regions (such as the East Pacific and East Atlantic) where ship tracks have commonly been observed. Each image has dimension 1354 x 2030 and a spatial resolution of 1km. Of the 36 bands collected by the instruments, we selected channels 1, 20, and 32 to capture useful physical properties of cloud formations.</p><p>The labels are found in the corresponding JSON files for each image. The following keys in the json are particularly important:</p><p>imagePath: the filename of the image.<br>shapes: the list of annotations corresponding to the image, where each element of the list is a dictionary corresponding to a single instance annotation. The dictionary has a key with value "shiptrack" or "uncertain" which is the label of the annotation and the corresponding value is a linestrip detailing the ship track path.</p><p>Further pre-processing details may be found at the GitHub link above. Ship tracks detected using machine learning algorithm
<p>The filtered, vector ship tracks detected using the linked machine learning algorithm and derived from the linked segmentation masks. Each dataset contains the date and other related data for each shiptrack polygon. The `_geo` dataset contains the polygons on a lat/lon coordinate system while the other provides the polygons on the MODIS swath (pixel) indices.</p>

Arctic Ocean Drift Tracks from Ships, Buoys, and Manned Research Stations, 1872-1973, Version 1
Thirty-four drift tracks in the Arctic Ocean pack ice are collected in a unified tabular data format, one file per track. Data are from drifting ships, manned research stations on ice floes (ice islands) and data buoys. Track names are FRAM (ship, 1893 to 1896), NP-01 through NP-20 (Soviet North Pole stations on ice floes, 1937, 1950, 1954 to 1970), IGY-A and IGY-B (International Geophysical Year ice camps, 1957 to 59), T-3 (Fletcher's Ice Island, 1959 to 1970), ARLIS-II (Arctic Research Laboratory Ice Station II ice camp, 1961 to 1965), BTAE (British Transarctic Expedition, 1968 to 1969), seven buoys deployed during the AIDJEX (Arctic Ice Dynamics Joint Experiment) pilot study (1972), TEGG (Austrian ship Tegetthoff, 1872 to 1873) and St. Anna (Russian ship, 1912 to 1914).
