Hubble's Constant with GW170817 Standard Siren and GW190814 Dark Siren

The local universe expansion rate is one of the most fundamental and essential cosmological parameters. This value which is known by the name of Hubble’s Constant is scientifically measured by electromagnetic sources called distance ladder. Surprisingly, using Gravitational Wave (GW) analysis this value can be measured making GW sources another significant method to act as standard sirens with their electromagnetic counterparts from their host galaxy. The gravitational wave event GW 170817 was the outcome of the merger of two different neutron stars. The electromagnetic event was recorded from the host galaxy NGC4993. The GW170817 has been a considerable success in this direction measuring the value of universe acceleration H0 = 70.0+12.0 −8.0 kms−1 Mpc−1. Another event in this series GW190817 is Compact Binary Coalescence involving a 22.2 – 24.3 The EM counterpart of this event is unknown so far and hence the event is named Dark Siren. The Hubble’s value proposed with this even is close to H0 = 75+59 −13 km s−1Mpc−1 .The source GW190814 which involves a massive black hole and the other compact object as the lightest black hole or the heaviest neutron star was localized to 18.5 deg2 at a distance of Mpc.

Figure of a Mourning Siren

Hellenistic figure of a mourning siren thought to represent a fragment of a larger funerary architectural element. This figure, measuring 7.3 x 7.1 x 4.9 cm, was carved from limestone and painted in color, the pigments of which are still traceable via various forms of technical analysis. Yale University Art Gallery, Ancient Art Collection, Catalog No. [2001.28.11](https://artgallery.yale.edu/collections/objects/77886) [Preliminary 3D color interpretation](https://skfb.ly/6FXu7) featured in the installation *Seeing Blue in the Ancient World* in the exhibit *Sights and Sounds of Ancient Ritual* at the Yale University Art Gallery 9 November 2018 - 3 March 2019. Scanned and processed by Yale Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage Digital Imaging Specialist Chelsea Alene Graham and Yale University Art Gallery Conservation Assistant III Andrés Garcés using Artec Space Spider and Artec Studio Professional in 2018. Data from: Using drones and sirens to elicit avoidance behaviour in white rhinoceros as an anti-poaching tactic

Poaching fuelled by international trade in horn caused the deaths of over 1000 African rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum and Diceros bicornis) per year between 2013 and 2017. Deterrents, which act to establish avoidance behaviours in animals, have the potential to aid anti-poaching efforts by moving at-risk rhinos away from areas of danger (e.g. near perimeter fences). To evaluate the efficacy of deterrents, we exposed a population of southern white rhinos (C. simum simum) to acoustic- (honeybee, siren, turtledove), olfactory- (chilli, sunflower) and drone-based stimuli on a game reserve in South Africa. We exposed rhinos to each stimulus up to four times. Stimuli were considered effective deterrents if they repeatedly elicited avoidance behaviour (locomotion away from the deterrent). Rhinos travelled significantly further in response to the siren than to the honeybee or turtledove stimulus, and to low altitude drone flights than to higher altitude flights. We found the drone to be superior at manipulating rhino movement than the siren due to its longer transmission range and capability of pursuit. In contrast, the scent stimuli were ineffective at inciting avoidance behaviour. Our findings indicate that deterrents are a prospective low-cost and in situ method to manage rhino movement in game reserves.
