GESIS - Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences data access categories
<p>Replication code for extracting and analysing data access categories from the oai-pmh feed provided by the GESIS - Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences DBK data catalogue. The code utilises the dc_oai-de feed to extract metadata about objects in the data catalogue, this is then edited to retain and summarise information on the four data access categories used by the archive. The oai-pmh metadata is available from GESIS under a CC0 licence.</p> <p>The .csv files extracted from the oai-pmh feed and edited to correct for missing records is also included for replication.</p>
Data on a citation context analysis focusing on natural sciences and social sciences and humanities
<p>This dataset contains data on citation context analysis between natural sciences (NS) and social sciences and humanities (SSH). In particular, the data were created through manual coding of each citation between papers related to SDG7 (renewable energy) and SDG13 (climate change) and papers cited by them. RDA Overview for the Social Sciences - October 2022
<p>This upload is the fourth version of a dataset on the RDA groups and outputs which was generated in October 2022. It is connected to a report that described a project that assessed the RDA Groups and Outcomes and their relevance for social science researchers. This datasets gives an overview of the results of this analysis, providing a list of all RDA Groups as well as an indication of the relevance for Social Sciences researchers. Survey on the social impact of the citizen science in the projects LIFE MIPP and InNat
<p>The present dataset consists in a sociological survey addressed to the volunteers involved in MIPP and InNat projects, a citizen science initiative aimed at the collection of distribution data of protected species and habitats all over Italian national territory. In particular, two different files are provided: </p> <ol> <li>the original survey (questions and answers) addressed to the volunteers in Italian</li> <li>the English translation of the questionnaire </li> </ol> <p>The survey covers different topics: socio-demographic data (section 1), opinions on the role of volunteering in a citizen science project (section 2), possible previous citizen science experience (section 3), test on the acquired skills on the monitored insect species with MIPP/InNat (section 4), opinions concerning the ecological crisis and the trust in the ability of humankind to solve environmental issues (section 5), possibility to be further contacted for additional interviews (section 6).</p> <p>A total of 364 completed questionnaires have been collected and relative results are provided here. Moreover, the above-mentioned results are thoroughly investigated and analysed in a scientific paper which also explores drivers that might keep volunteers active in a biodiversity monitoring project. Indeed, the engagement of volunteers in citizen science projects is a remarkable issue to address in order to ensure long-term sustainability, scientific relevance and public participation.</p> <p>The MIPP/InNat initiative started in 2012, with the project MIPP “Monitoring of insects with public participation” (LIFE11 NAT/IT/000252) which ended in 2017, and was then continued by the InNat project thanks to Italian National fundings. Data gathered in both projects converged in the same database. Using Hydroclimate Modeling and Social Science to Enhance Flood Resilience on Lake Ontario through the Climate Smart Communities Program
<p>This repository contains several data products associated with the New York Sea Grant project R/CHD-15 entitled <em>Using Hydroclimate Modeling and Social Science to Enhance Flood Resilience on Lake Ontario through the Climate Smart Communities Program.</em><strong><em> </em></strong>These products include:</p> <p>1. Estimates of the 25-year, 50-year, and 100-year flood across the New York coastline of Lake Ontario. These design events (reported in feet) are for still water levels that take into account both average water levels across the lake as well as local variations in water level due to storm surge. Wave setup and wave run-up are not considered in these design events. The design events incorporate the effects of water level regulation and the potential impacts of climate change on water supplies to Lake Ontario, and they are tailored for 79 unique locations along the shoreline (identified based on longitude and latitude). These flood levels are presented in an online flood risk assessment tool at: https://kts48.users.earthengine.app/view/lake-ontario-water-level-scenarios</p> <p>2. Protocols and summary of results for a series of focus groups and structured telephone interviews with local officials from communities along the Lake Ontario shoreline to assess barriers to participation in the New York State Climate Smart Communities Program.</p> <p>3. A Crosswalk between activities and administrative requirements of the New York State Climate Smart Communities Program and other federal and state flood resiliency programs. </p> <p>4. A final report summarizing the products above. </p>

Data from: CoAct Citizen Science chatbot explores social support networks in mental health based on lived experiences
<p>A data set on lived experiences in the context of social support in mental health, created within a Citizen Social Science project. </p> <p><br> Societies around the world increasingly encounter wicked and complex problems, such as those related to mental health, environmental justice, and youth employment. <strong>CoAct as a EU-funded global effort</strong> addresses these problems by deploying Citizen Social Science. </p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Citizen Social Science</strong> is understood here as participatory research co-designed and directly driven by citizen groups sharing a social concern. This methodology wants to give citizen groups an equal ‘seat at the table’ through <strong>active participation in research</strong>, from the design to the interpretation of the results and their transformation into concrete actions. Citizens thus act as <strong>co-researchers</strong> and are recognised as in-the-field competent experts. </p> <p> </p> <p>In Barcelona, a group of <strong>32 co-researchers</strong> work together with the OpenSystems group, Universitat de Barcelona, the Catalan Federation of Mental Health (Federació Salut Mental Catalunya), and with the help of many others on a better understanding of informal <strong>social support networks in mental health</strong> in the project <em>CoActuem per la Salut Mental</em> (lit. “We act together for mental health”). The co-researchers, who are either persons with a personal history of mental health problems or are family members of the latter, contributed their <strong>personal experiences related to social support</strong> in the form of <strong>222 micro-stories</strong>, each shorter than 400 characters, and most accompanied by an illustration by Pau Badia.</p> <p> </p> <p>Those micro-stories form the heart of the first co-created Citizen Science chatbot, the code of which is open on <a href="https://github.com/Chaotique/CoActuem_per_la_Salut_Mental_Chatbot.git">https://github.com/Chaotique/CoActuem_per_la_Salut_Mental_Chatbot.git</a> . The <strong>Telegram chatbot</strong> sends them to participants <strong>on a daily basis over the course of a year</strong> and asks them either, whether they and/ or their close surrounding lived this experience, too (stories of type C), or, how they would or would have reacted in the presented situation (stories of type T). The answers of each participant can be contrasted with the individual participants’ answer to a 32-questions <strong>socio-demographic survey</strong>. Further, the timing of the messages is included to allow for a broader analysis. </p> <p> </p> <p>The chatbot is still running, hence this data set will still be updated. Making Social Science Research Transparent [Webinar recording]
<p>High-quality data have the potential to be reused in many ways. Archiving and publishing your data properly is at the core of making your data FAIR and will enable both your future self as well as others to get the most out of your data. Recently, more and more scientific journals are implementing open data policies, leading to researchers' dilemmas about where, when and how to publish the data. Consequently, the way that social science research is conducted and disseminated is gradually changing. A crucial element of that change is research transparency. Introduction to the topic took place in the first part of the event.</p> <p>In the second part, panellists presented in-depth the processes, policies and tools implemented for facilitating transparent research in the social sciences. They discussed the processes that need to be in place for an open research cycle, the role of data archives and repositories in sharing research data and materials, tools for reproducing research findings in practice, collaborations between archives and social science journals, and implementing Transparency and Openness Promotion Guidelines in different social science disciplines.</p> <p>The video is available on<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-phrIMETGk"> the CESSDA Training YouTube channel</a>.</p>
Data management in the social sciences in Macedonia [Webinar recording]
<p>This webinar aimed to introduce social science researchers to the basic principles of data management, including the creation of a Data management plan, which is an important tool for planning the research project.</p> <p>The webinar consisted of three parts. The first part introduced researchers with the basic principles of data management including the benefits of adopting Data management plans (DMPs). The DMP follows the research projects’ life cycle, starting with the initial phases of Planning and Organization and documentation of research data. This part also included a presentation of best practices for creation of appropriate structure of folders and data files, as well as instructions for their naming, documentation and organization.</p> <p>The second part of the webinar focused on the following three phases of the project life cycle: Data processing, Preservation and Protection. Contemporary social science presumes the respect of high level ethical standards during the handling of research data, in accordance with legal rules and best practices in this area.</p> <p>The last part of the webinar was dedicated to the phases of Publication - familiarizing the researchers with the possibilities of data preservation and publishing; and Data discovery - discussing the ways and means to acquire social science data, including the secondary use of data produced by other researchers.</p> <p>The video is available on<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n05WTs58CMY"> the CESSDA Training YouTube channel</a>.</p>
Research Data Management and data protection in the Social Sciences [Workshop recording]
<p>This online workshop organized by The Austrian Social Science Data Archive (AUSSDA) focused on the Research Data Management basics, Data Management Plans and common data protection issues in the Social Sciences.</p> <p>The first part of the workshop was dedicated to RDM basics and Data Management Plans (DMPs). In many projects, DMPs are mandatory deliverables that need to be submitted at the beginning of a project and are updated throughout the project life cycle. During the workshop, it was explained which aspect funders expect to be part of DMPs in Social Sciences and how researchers can benefit from (writing) these documents.</p> <p>In the second part of the workshop, data protection issues that are common in Social Sciences were addressed and how they can be handled. In particular, differences in the curation of quantitative and qualitative data need in order to comply with data protection regulations in general and AUSSDA deposit guidelines in particular. The underlying premise is that open infrastructures play a pivotal role in promoting transparency, reproducibility, and trust in scientific research.<br> <strong>Study Design and Methodology:</strong> the study is grounded on the premise that open infrastructures are crucial for ensuring transparency, reproducibility, and fostering trust in scientific research. The research methodology involved the use of secondary data sources, namely the OpenCitations Meta database, the ERIH PLUS bibliographic index, and the DOAJ index. A custom research software was developed in Python to facilitate the processing and analysis of the data.<br> <strong>Findings:</strong> the results reveal that 78.1% of SSH journals listed in the European Reference Index for the Humanities (ERIH-PLUS) are included in the OpenCitations Meta database. The discipline of Psychology has the highest number of publications. The United States and the United Kingdom are the leading contributors in terms of the number of publications. However, the study also uncovers that only 38% of the SSH journals in the OpenCitations Meta database are OA.<br> <strong>Originality:</strong> this research adds to the existing body of knowledge by providing insights into the representation of SSH in open bibliographic databases and the role of open access in this domain. The study highlights the necessity for advocating OA practices within SSH and the significance of open data for bibliometric studies. The underlying premise is that open infrastructures play a pivotal role in promoting transparency, reproducibility, and trust in scientific research.<br> <strong>Study Design and Methodology:</strong> the study is grounded on the premise that open infrastructures are crucial for ensuring transparency, reproducibility, and fostering trust in scientific research. The research methodology involved the use of secondary data sources, namely the OpenCitations Meta database, the ERIH PLUS bibliographic index, and the DOAJ index. A custom research software was developed in Python to facilitate the processing and analysis of the data.<br> <strong>Findings:</strong> the results reveal that 78.1% of SSH journals listed in the European Reference Index for the Humanities (ERIH-PLUS) are included in the OpenCitations Meta database. The discipline of Psychology has the highest number of publications. The United States and the United Kingdom are the leading contributors in terms of the number of publications. However, the study also uncovers that only 38% of the SSH journals in the OpenCitations Meta database are OA.<br> <strong>Originality:</strong> this research adds to the existing body of knowledge by providing insights into the representation of SSH in open bibliographic databases and the role of open access in this domain. The study highlights the necessity for advocating OA practices within SSH and the significance of open data for bibliometric studies. East-African Social Sciences and Humanities Journals active in 2008-2009
<p>Research Data of „East-African Social Sciences and Humanities Publishing: A Handmade Bibliometrics Approach“, Proceedings of the 21st International Conference on Science and Technology Indicators, València (Spain), September 14-16, 2016.</p> <p>Corrected second version: due to an error, the journal “Chemchemi” was not included in “1 final list merged” and “7 ceased-established”. However, this does not change the conclusions drawn in the paper.</p> <p>Abstract of the paper to be published in the proceedings: For Eastern Africa, very little information about the SSH knowledge production can be found from a European perspective. Adequate indicators like information-rich bibliographic databases that cover East-Africa-based journals and book publishers are lacking. This research in progress explores their indexing situation in detail, their development, which is closely connected to political history, their (non-)usage, and affiliations as well as career-stages of their authors. Furthermore, it also pays attention to East-Africa-based SSH researchers who use other publication venues. Any bibliometric analysis in this field needs to rely on manual data collection, otherwise it would be heavily biased. This study lays out the foundation for citation analyses, qualitative research on the publications' content and the self-description of East-African scholars against the background of an academic environment that is often described as “international”.</p>
Dataset - Understanding the software and data used in the social sciences
<p>This is a repository for a UKRI Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funded project to understand the software used to analyse social sciences data.</p><p>Any software produced has been made available under a BSD 2-Clause license and any data and other non-software derivative is made available under a CC-BY 4.0 International License. Of these responses, three were removed because they were supplied by people from outside the UK without a clear indication of involvement with the UK or associated infrastructure. A fourth response was removed as both came from the same person which leaves us with 164 responses in the data.</p><p>The survey responses, Question (Q) Q1-Q16, have been decoupled from the demographic data, Q17-Q23. Questions Q24-Q28 are for follow-up and have been removed from the data. The institutions (Q17) and funding sources (Q18) have been provided in a separate file as this could be used to identify respondents. Q17, Q18 and Q19-Q23 have all been independently shuffled.</p><p>The data has been made available as Comma Separated Values (CSV) with the question number as the header of each column and the encoded responses in the column below.
