Data from: Institutional complexity emerges from socioecological complexity in small-scale human societies

<p>Human lifestyles vary enormously over time and space and so understanding the origins of this diversity has always been a central focus of anthropology. A major source of this cultural variation is the variation in institutional complexity; the cultural packages of rules, norms, ontologies, and expectations passed down through societies across generations. In this paper we study the emergence of institutions in small-scale societies. There are two primary schools of thought. The first is that institutions emerge top-down as rules are imposed by elites on their societies in order to gain asymmetrical access to power, resources, and influence over others through coercion. The second is that institutions emerge bottom-up to facilitate interactions within populations as they seek collective solutions to adaptive problems. Here, we use Bayesian networks to infer the causal structure of institutional complexity in 172 small-scale societies across ethnohistoric western North America reflecting the wide diversity of indigenous lifestyles across this vast region immediately prior to European colonization. Our results suggest that institutional complexity emerges from underlying socioecological complexity because institutions are solutions to coordination problems in more complex environments where human-environment interactions require increased management.</p>

Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Socioecological Monitoring

This dataset covers observations of human activities and traces collected during monitoring runs to and on Ecorestore project sites. The dataset provides snapshots of activity at the point and time of monitoring, which occurred during daylight hours on weekdays. Locations are approximate as many observations were recorded by reach (between launches and destinations). The goal of the monitoring project was to assemble a composite and comparative picture of human use and activities in the Sacramento-San Joaquin, based on the following typologies: Waterways, Tracts (reclaimed; Farmed, Wildlife-friendly farmed, Subsidence reversal, Managed marsh/duck club (Suisun Marsh, Yolo Bypass), Other), Flooded tracts (Franks Tract, Big Break), Restoration (Tidal wetlands, Floodplain/levee setback/breaching). This dataset was created as part of the experimental prototyping of a socioecological monitoring protocol. This protocol was developed in collaboration with the CDFW fish restoration program to enable the collection of human use and activity data in and around Ecorestore project sites. The human use data was intended to inform understanding of how restoration affected human uses and activities. The idea was to collect data before, during, and after restoration, which would have enabled a modified Before-After-Control-Impact (BACI) test. Not enough data was collected to effectively conduct this test. Geographic coordinates correspond with an approximate location of monitoring sites and rivers reaches within which observations were recorded.

Data from: Socioecological predictors of immune defenses in wild spotted hyenas

Social rank can profoundly affect many aspects of mammalian reproduction and stress physiology, but little is known about how immune function is affected by rank and other socioecological factors in free-living animals. In this study, we examine the effects of sex, social rank and reproductive status on immune function in long-lived carnivores that are routinely exposed to a plethora of pathogens, yet rarely show signs of disease. Here, we show that two types of immune defences, complement-mediated bacterial killing capacity (BKC) and total IgM, are positively correlated with social rank in wild hyenas, but that a third type, total IgG, does not vary with rank. Female spotted hyenas, which are socially dominant to males in this species, have higher BKC, and higher IgG and IgM concentrations, than do males. Immune defences are lower in lactating than pregnant females, suggesting the immune defences may be energetically costly. Serum cortisol and testosterone concentrations are not reliable predictors of basic immune defences in wild female spotted hyenas. These results suggest that immune defences are costly and multiple socioecological variables are important determinants of basic immune defences among wild hyenas. The effects of these variables should be accounted for when attempting to understand disease ecology and immune function.
