NEMARCO project: Dataset for the publication "Solidification Path, Strengthening Mechanisms and Hardness of Ni-Cr-Si-Fe-B Self-Fluxing Alloys Obtained by Laser-Directed Energy Deposition (LMD)"

LMD dataset

This dataset gathers data from different parts of the Laser Metal Deposition metal Additive Manufacturing process (DED-LB). The dataset covers not only the process development data for samples manufacturing and monitored data of the melt pool size during the process, but also the metrics associated to the powder feedstock consumption, energy consumption and process efficiency.

Motivation

Nickel-based Ni-Cr-Si-B self-fluxing alloys are excellent candidates to replace Cobalt-based alloys in aeronautical components. In this work, metal additive manufacturing by directed energy deposition using a laser beam (DED-LB, also known as LMD) and gas-atomized powders as a material feedstock is presented as a potential manufacturing route for the complex processing of these alloys. This research deals with the advanced material characterization of these alloys obtained by LMD and the study and understanding of their solidification paths and strengthening mechanisms.

Data from: The rainfall effect onto solidification and stabilization of heavy metal-polluted sediments
Rainfall makes impacts on process of solidification/stabilization and the long-term safety of solidified matrix. In this study, the effect of rainfall on solidification/stabilization process was investigated by rainfall test. The unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) were adopted to characterize the properties of S/S sediments before and after rainfall test. The samples cured for 28 days were subjected to semi-dynamic leaching tests with a simulated acidic leachant prepared at pH of 2.0, 4.0 and 7.0. Effectiveness of S/S treatment was evaluated by diffusion coefficient (D_e) and leachability index (LX). The results indicated that UCS decreased at maximum deterioration rate of 34.29% of the compressive strength after 7 days of curing, along with minimum rate of 7.89% after 28 days by rainfall, with >14 days referred. The rainfall had little effect on the leaching characteristics of heavy metals during the curing process. The simulated acid rain could make significant impacts on the leaching behavior of the heavy metals in the S/S materials. All cumulative fraction of leached heavy metals were less than 2.0 % which showed the good stabilization of cement. Furthermore, the calculated diffusion coefficient (D_e) for Cu was 1.28×10-11〖cm〗^2/s, indicating that its mobility was relatively low of heavy in S/S sediments. The calculated diffusion coefficient (Di) for Cd, Cu and Pb were 7.44×10-11, 8.18×10-12 and 7.85×10-12〖cm〗^2/s respectively, indicating that its mobility was relatively low of heavy metal in S/S sediments.

The material has been studied in the frame of the collaborative research center SFB/TR 103. All details on the applied Bridgman technique are described in the literature (Hallensleben, P., et al., Mat. Des. 2017, 128, 98–111, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.matdes.2017.05.001 and Hallensleben, P., et al., Crystals 2019, 9 (3), 149, https://doi.org/10.3390/cryst9030149). The tomographic image slices were prepared by successive electro discharge machining using incremental steps of 1mm. The image series represents the evolution of dendritic microstructures during the early stages of crystal growth from the back melted seed. The five wide-field micrographs were used to retrieve dendrite positions (enclosed as CSV data for each cross section) to evaluate crystal mosaicity on the basis of dendrite growth directions. All information and a detailed interpretation of tomographic are available in (Scholz, F., PhD-thesis, Ruhr University Bochum, https://doi.org/10.13154/294-8079). We hope that our image data will be useful for other types of solidification research. Please provide a notification by personal mail on the re-use of our raw data. Thank you.

All images and dendrite position data were evaluated in the following study concerning dendrite growth behavior, low angle misorientation defects, dendrite arrangements and spacings:

Scholz, F.; Cevik, M.; Hallensleben, P.; Thome, P.; Eggeler, G.; Frenzel, J.
