Room Impulse Responses for Low-Frequency Sound Field Control

About

A dataset of room impulse responses (RIRs) measured in the low frequency range, for different measurement signal lengths, in two rooms with different acoustic conditions. Acquired with the purpose of low-frequency sound zones rendering and evaluation, the dataset can be used in general for different sound field control methods.

By design, the dataset is composed of two sets of RIRs: one intended for the design of the control strategies, and another one intended for evaluation [1]. The RIRs of the first set, obtained with measurement signals of different length, allow exploring the influence of the acquisition time of the RIRs in the control methods [2]. The RIRs of the second set allow evaluating the sound field generated at and around the position of the RIRs of the first set.

The RIRs were acquired with the Synchronized Swept-Sine (SSS) method, proposed by Novak et al. [3], at a samplig frequency of 48 kHz with SSS signals varying from 15 Hz to 600 Hz. The obtained RIRs were re-sampled to 1.2 kHz.

Two files with different contents have been added:

RIR_LF_SFC_Light: contains the documentation, MatLab codes, and the ready-to-use RIRs stored as 3D-arrays in .mat files.

RIR_LF_SFC_Full: in addition to files in RIR_LF_SFC_Light, it contains the original SSS signals and the signals recorded during the measurements. These were used to retrieve the RIRs and therefore, can be used for custom purposes.

Citation

Please cite the database with the following paper:

@inproceedings{cadavid_ATvsSS_2024,
title={Spatial Sampling versus Acquisition Time of Room Impulse
 Responses for Low-Frequency Sound Zones},
 author={Cadavid, Jos{\'e} and M{\o}ller, Martin Bo and van Waterschoot, Toon and Bech, S{\o}ren and {\O}stergaard, Jan},
 booktitle={Audio Engineering Society Convention 156},
 year={2024},
 organization={Audio Engineering Society} }

Acknowledgements

The authors would like to thank Antonin Novak, Christian S. Data: Effects of broadband sound exposure on the interaction between foraging crab and shrimp – a field study

Data abstract:

Data on foraging crabs and shrimps during trials with or without broadband sound exposures. Trials were conducted in situ using baited cameras.

Paper abstract:

Aquatic animals live in an acoustic world in which they often rely on sound detection and recognition for various aspects of life that may affect survival and reproduction. Human exploitation of marine resources leads to increasing amounts of anthropogenic sound underwater, which may affect marine life negatively. Marine mammals and fishes are known to use sounds and to be affected by anthropogenic noise, but relatively little is known about invertebrates such as decapod crustaceans. We conducted experimental trials in the natural conditions of a quiet cove. We attracted shore crabs (Carcinus maenas) and common shrimps (Crangon crangon) with an experimentally fixed food item and compared trials in which we started playback of a broadband artificial sound to trials without exposure. During trials with sound exposure, the cumulative count of crabs that aggregated at the food item was lower, while variation in cumulative shrimp count could be explained by a negative correlation with crabs. These results suggest that crabs may be negatively affected by artificially elevated noise levels, but that shrimps may indirectly benefit by competitive release. Eating activity for the animals present was not affected by the sound treatment in either species. Our results show that moderate changes in acoustic conditions due to human activities can affect foraging interactions at the base of the marine food chain.

Reference:

Hubert, J., Campbell, J., van der Beek, J.G., den Haan, M.F., Verhave, R., Verkade L.S., and Slabbekoorn H. "I made the recording because Iam an amateur recording engineer and also work for a radio station. At the time, Iwas researching for a religious programme, for the radio and by pure chance and good luck, Iwas in the centre of York at the time the street preacher was there. Iam building up a personal library of 'ambient sounds' to use on various radio shows as 'sound effects'. The recording was taken outside St Helen's Church in St Helen's Square, in the centre of York. There was a fairly large crowd walking about, shopping. It was a Saturday. Some people were standing and listening to the man, some were mocking him, others didn't even notice. It was a sunny day, with a slight wind. St Helen's square is a large 'meeting place' for people with seats, flowers and usually musicians. I live in the centre of York and hear a lot of very interesting sounds there, everything from busking musicians, to many foreign languages, church bells, animals and much more. Ireally liked the recording of the preacher as it is quite clear that he passionately believes what he is saying. He was unaware that Iwas recording him. Iwish Ihad captured his whole sermon. He, and other members of his church visit the centre of York quite often, and preach there. Idon't know the name of his church." [Jools/vedas]19 in Collecting Sounds.
