Activity budgets and space use for two common Pacific parrotfish (Chlorurus Sp.) at Palmyra Atoll National Wildlife Refuge
Data was collected at Palmyra Atoll National Wildlife Refuge located in the Central Pacific in 2014, and the work focuses on two species of Parrotfish, Chlorurus microrhinos and Chlorurus spilurus (formerly Cholrurus sordidus). For C. microrhinos, the project was designed to collect fine-scale spatial behavior data, focusing on territory size, species interactions, and benthic impact (i.e. feeding behavior). Focal follow data was collected by one or two observer(s), either on snorkel or SCUBA, and recording focal activity down to the second. Simultaneously, the observer would be towing a GPS that was recording a location every 5 seconds and each location was then associated with a particular behavior. Throughout this study individual fish were identifiable and successive follows were possible on individuals. For C. spilurus the focus of the project was to collect behavioral time budget data on feeding, territorial defense, and spawning behavior. The ‘Chlorurus_Area_Palmyra_2014.csv’ data only covers C. Microrhinos and gives the 95% KUD area estimation for GPS towed tracks, as well as the 95% KUD area for locations where feeding was occurring. We also report the step length between successive points for the entire follow as well as where feeding was occurring. The ‘Chlorurus_Activity_Palmyra_2014.csv’ is for both C. Microrhinos and C. spilurus and reports the start and stop time of each focal follow as well as the start and stop time of each activity. Activity descriptions can be found in the metadata and the total length and phase for each individual in our study can be found in ‘Fish_Information_Chlorurus_Data_2014.csv.
EJR01 Foraging decisions underlying restricted space-use: effects of fire and forage maturation on large herbivore nutrient uptake on Konza Prairie
Recent models suggest that herbivores optimize nutrient intake by selecting patches of low to intermediate vegetation biomass. We assessed the application of this hypothesis to plains bison (Bison bison) in an experimental grassland managed with fire by estimating daily rates of nutrient intake in relation to grass biomass and by measuring patch selection in experimental watersheds in which grass biomass was manipulated by prescribed burning. Digestible crude protein content of grass declined linearly with increasing biomass, and the mean digestible protein content relative to grass biomass was greater in burned watersheds than watersheds not burned that spring (intercept; F1,251 = 50.57, P < 0.0001). Linking these values to published functional response parameters, ad libitum protein intake, and protein expenditure parameters, Fryxell's (Am. Nat., 1991, 138, 478) model predicted that the daily rate of protein intake should be highest when bison feed in grasslands with 400 - 600 kg/ha. In burned grassland sites, where bison spend most of their time, availability of grass biomass ranged between 40 and 3650 kg/ha, bison selected foraging areas of roughly 690 kg/ha, close to the value for protein intake maximization predicted by the model. The seasonal net protein intake predicted for large grazers in this study suggest feeding in burned grassland can be more beneficial for nutrient uptake relative to unburned grassland as long as grass regrowth is possible. Foraging site selection for grass patches of low to intermediate biomass help explain patterns of uniform space use reported previously for large grazers in fire-prone systems. This data set was used to test the forage maturation hypothesis in the Konza Prairie bison enclosure from 2012-2013. This dataset provides a survey of short term accretion across the PIE LTER at both high and low marsh sites. A marker horizon plot was established and sampled annually to determine depth of accretion since deployment.

PIE LTER plant biomass associated with marsh sites used in space for time sea level rise study, Rowley, MA.
This dataset contains the mass of dried grasses collected from clip plots in the PIE LTER Space for Time Sea Level Rise study. The space for time study uses an intensive and comprehensive approach to compare low elevation, Spartina alterniflora marsh areas to higher elevation Spartina patens marsh areas. Grasses are sampled in plots from 4 transects per site with five plots per site, arranged from the tidal creek's edge to no more than 150 meters back from the creek. PIE LTER herbivory measurement associated with marsh sites used in space for time sea level rise study, Rowley, MA.
This dataset contains aggregated observations of predation and herbivory on tethered bait in each quadrat of sites around the Rowley River and the south side of Sawyer Island at the Plum Island LTER. Measurements consist of the consumption status of tethered squid or kelp pieces as a measure of energy transfer between trophic levels. Pieces were left in the field for five days and observers recorded the status of bait over time as either entirely missing, partially consumed, having scrape marks, or fully intact. These measurements can be used to calculate consumption rates (i.e. energy transfer) over time. Notes include fields discussing any additional observations - e.g., if a stick was found missing.
PIE LTER fish and crab trap data associated with marsh sites used in space for time sea level rise study, Rowley, MA.
This dataset consists of assessments of crab and fish abundances using traps placed in creeks adjacent to marsh community survey transects at sites around the Rowley River and the south side of Sawyer Island at the Plum Island LTER. At each site, four sets of crab and fish traps were deployed for one week. Traps were sampled daily and all individuals were identified and then returned to the creek away from the area where traps were placed. See HTL-RO-ST-MAR-Sites for site description.

To assess community structure, first each 1 square meter is first examined by moving grass around to scan the substrate for mussels, crab burrows, amphipod burrows, and Littorina littorea snails. Researchers then estimates the percent live cover of a variety of plant species, checking against a standard list of species. Species not on the list are also recorded, and, if unknown, for identification in the lab after sampling. Each species has its cover recorded individually, which could lead to greater than 100% cover. Percent cover of bare space, detritus, and wrack are also recorded. Last, Melampus bidentata snails are recorded in 10 cm x 10 cm at each corner of the quadrat.

Effects of food supplementation and helminth removal on space use and spatial overlap in wild bank vole populations
<p>Animal space use and spatial overlap can have important consequences for population-level processes such as social interactions and pathogen transmission. Identifying how environmental variability and inter-individual variation affect spatial patterns and in turn influence interactions in animal populations is a priority for the study of animal behavior and disease ecology. Environmental food availability and macroparasite infection are common drivers of variation, but there are few experimental studies investigating how they affect spatial patterns of wildlife. Bank voles (<em>Clethrionomys glareolus</em>) are a tractable study system to investigate spatial patterns of wildlife and are amenable to experimental manipulations. We conducted a replicated, factorial field experiment in which we provided supplementary food and removed helminths in vole populations in natural forest habitats and monitored vole space use and spatial overlap using capture-mark-recapture methods. Using network analysis, we quantified vole space use and spatial overlap. We compared the effects of food supplementation and helminth removal and investigated the impact of season, sex, and reproductive status on space use and spatial overlap. We found that food supplementation decreased vole space use while helminth removal increased space use. Space use also varied by sex, reproductive status, and season. Spatial overlap was similar between treatments despite up to three-fold differences in population size. By quantifying the spatial effects of food availability and macroparasite infection on wildlife populations, we demonstrate the potential for space use and population density to trade off and maintain consistent spatial overlap in wildlife populations. This has important implications for spatial processes in wildlife including pathogen transmission.</p>

Use of outdoor spaces during COVID-19 in Copenhagen
<p>This dataset was collected during the first phase of Covid19 lockdown in Copenhagen, Denmark. The target was 5/10 districts in the municipality of Copenhagen (the urban core of the capital region). Respondents were recruited through the five districts volunteer citizen panels by use of the PPGIS platform Maptionnaire. The data includes responses from 4339 valid respondents who mapped 7276 visitation points. Respondents were asked to map outdoor spaces used regularly.<br> </p>
Landscape composition and life-history traits influence bat movement and space use: analysis of 30 years of published telemetry data
<p>Using temperate bats, a group of particular conservation concern, we investigated how morphological traits, habitat specialization and environmental variables affect home range sizes and daily foraging movements, using a compilation of 30 years of published bat telemetry data in Northern America and Europe for the period 1988 – 2016.</p> <p>We compiled data on home range size and mean daily distance between roosts and foraging areas at both colony and individual levels from 166 studies of 3,129 radiotracked individuals of 49 bat species. We calculated multi-scale habitat composition and configuration in the surrounding landscapes of all studied roosts. Using mixed models, we examined the effects of habitat availability and spatial arrangement on bat movements, while accounting for body mass, aspect ratio, wing loading and habitat specialization.</p> <p>We found a significant effect of landscape composition on home range size and mean daily distance at both colony and individual levels. On average, home ranges were up to 42% smaller in the most habitat-diversified landscapes while mean daily distances were up to 30% shorter in the most forested landscapes. Bat home range size significantly increased with body mass, wing aspect ratio and wing loading, and decreased with habitat specialization.</p>

All survey files are translated into three languages (English, French and German).</p> <p>At the time of this publication, these questionnaires have already been used for conducting face-to-face surveys in 2016 in Brussels (Belgium), in 2017 in Luxembourg-city (Luxembourg) and in 2017 in Rouen (France).</p> <p>The results of these surveys are provided in raw data format (csv files), after anonymisation (home and workplace locations have been removed).</p> <p>Please feel free to contact us for any supplementary info.</p>
