<p>The size and distribution of home ranges reflects how individuals within a population use, defend, and share space and resources, and may thus be an important predictor of population-level dynamics. In eruptive species like the house mouse in Australian grain growing regions, contrasting space use between stable and outbreaking populations allows us to test predictions regarding social or life history strategies that may contribute to an outbreak. In this study we use spatially explicit capture-recapture models to compare home range overlap (as a proxy for territoriality) in female mice from populations showing different outbreak trajectories. We found that female space use in spring varied between outbreaking and stable populations. Our analysis indicated greater home range overlap in populations with stable trajectories compared to those that would later experience an outbreak, suggesting females in these stable populations may have had greater potential for cooperative group formation as indicated by shared space use. We discuss the results with respect to intrinsic factors, such as kin structure, with potential implications for better predicting mouse outbreaks at a microgeographic scale.</p>
Effects of social organisation and elevation on spatial genetic structure in a montane ant
<p><span>Studying patterns of population structure across the landscape sheds light on dispersal and demographic processes, which helps to inform conservation decisions. Here, we study how social organisation and landscape factors affect spatial patterns of genetic differentiation in an ant species living in mountainous regions. Using genome-wide SNP markers, we assess population structure in the Alpine silver ant, <em>Formica selysi</em>. This species has two social forms controlled by a supergene. The monogyne form has one queen per colony, while the polygyne form has multiple queens per colony. The two social forms co-occur in the same populations. For both social forms, we found a strong pattern of isolation-by-distance across the Alps. Within regions, genetic differentiation between populations was weaker for the monogyne form than for the polygyne form. We suggest that this pattern is due to higher dispersal and effective population sizes in the monogyne form. In addition, we found stronger isolation-by-distance and lower genetic diversity in high elevation populations, compared to lowland populations, suggesting that gene flow between F. selysi populations in the Alps occurs mostly through riparian corridors along lowland valleys. Overall, this survey highlights the need to consider intraspecific polymorphisms when assessing population connectivity and calls for special attention to the conservation of lowland habitats in mountain regions.</span></p>

Resource availability and heterogeneity shape the self‐organisation of regular spatial patterning
<p>Explaining large-scale ordered patterns and their effects on ecosystem functioning is a fundamental and controversial challenge in ecology. Here, we coupled empirical and theoretical approaches to explore how competition and spatial heterogeneity govern the regularity of colony dispersion in fungus-farming termites. Individuals from different colonies fought fiercely, and inter-nest distances were greater when nests were large and resources scarce—as expected if competition is strong, large colonies require more resources, and foraging area scales with resource availability. Building these principles into a model of inter-colony competition showed that highly ordered patterns emerged under high resource availability and low resource heterogeneity. Analysis of this dynamical model provided novel insights into the mechanisms that modulate pattern regularity and the emergent effects of these patterns on system-wide productivity. Our results show how environmental context shapes pattern formation by social-insect ecosystem engineers, which offers one explanation for the marked variability observed across ecosystems.</p>
