Dataset of "Thermal Stability of Valuable Metals in Lithium-Ion Battery Cathode Materials: Temperature Range 100-400 °C"

<p>Lithium is crucial in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), serving as a main component of the electrolyte and cathode. Elements such as cobalt, nickel, and manganese are also vital for high performance, energy density, and stability. This study aimed to examine the behaviour of end- of-life cathode material (LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2) and its valuable metals after exposure to temperatures between 100 and 400 &deg;C, comparing it with untreated material. The lithium content cannot be reliably determined by conventional analytical methods, so inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) was chosen for this purpose. For ICP-OES measurements, samples were dissolved in different solvents for a specified time, and the concentrations of lithium, nickel, manganese, and cobalt were measured. From the measured values, their theoretical yields were calculated. Due to the annealing at given temperatures and subsequent dissolution, this step can be considered as the first stage of the pyrometallurgical- hydrometallurgical process used in battery recycling. The study was complemented by further analyses to monitor the effect of annealing temperatures on the properties of the material. Based on the results, it was found that the highest theoretical yield in this temperature range was for material annealed at 400 &deg;C and dissolved in 20% nitric acid for 4 hours.</p>

Soil Organic Matter Mechanisms of Stabilization (SOMMOS) - enhanced soil characterization data from 40 National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) sites

Soil organic matter (SOM) is a critical linkage among many ecosystem services that sustain our society and life on Earth. It is the primary energy source for microbes and the principal storehouse of water necessary for plant growth. SOM also stores nutrients for plants and sorbs pollutants that otherwise could contaminate food and water supplies. Soils also help regulate climate by storing carbon that would otherwise be released to the atmosphere and contribute to climate change. The SOMMOS project investigated processes in the soil that protect SOM from being decomposed by microbes, processes that increase its sensitivity to environmental changes, and how changes in climate and land management influence the amount and stability of SOM. The project, which was a collaboration between scientists from the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON), University of Colorado, University of Michigan, Oregon State University, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and the USDA-Forest Service, took advantage of soil samples collected across NEON, a major NSF investment in environmental monitoring that covers the entire United States. This continental-scale soil sample set was analyzed for a wide array of physical and chemical properties, well beyond those typically measured on such a large-scale sample set, including radiocarbon, extractable metals, organic matter chemistry by pyrolysis-GCMS, liquid extract fluorescence spectroscopy, and more. In addition to this dataset, archived samples are available from the project for sharing with interested researchers.

Quantifying changes in fish population stability using statistical early warnings of regime shifts

This data package describes long-term trends in metrics describing population stability and used as statistical early warnings of regime shifts in 29 fish species that inhabit the San Francisco Bay-Delta in central California, USA. Metrics used in this study include spatial synchrony, temporal coefficient of variation (CV), and lag-1 temporal autocorrelation. Trends were measured using ordinary least squares linear regression. These derived data were developed from abundance (as CPUE) time series based on three long-term fish monitoring studies included in https://doi.org/10.6073/pasta/a29a6e674b0f8797e13fbc4b08b92e5b; the Fall Midwater Trawl Survey, Delta Juvenile Monitoring Program, and Bay Study. Selected data were from fall months (September to December) in 1980-2023, from midwater trawl and beach seine surveys for which sampling effort (e.g., tow volume) was recorded. Data on fish exceeding maximum length thresholds for age-0 fish were discarded, except for white sturgeon, where the maximum length threshold corresponded to approximately 10 years of age, the onset of reproductive maturity. Observations from different sampling stations were aggregated into 10 sub-regions (South San Francisco Bay, Central San Francisco Bay, San Pablo Bay, Napa River, Suisun Bay, Delta Confluence, South Delta, North Delta, San Joaquin River, Sacramento River, and midwater trawl samples and beach seine samples were considered separately because the methods sample distinct habitat types. Combinations of sub-region and sampling method were considered distinct spatial units. EWI metrics were measured in 5-year rolling windows to permit assessment of changes over time. The temporal CV and lag-1 autocorrelation were measured on individual spatial unit time series, ignoring windows with >1 year of missing data. Dataset of "Balancing Activity and Stability through Compositional Engineering of Ternary PtNi–Au Alloy ORR Catalysts"

<p>A systematic comparative analysis of the activity-stability relationship for compositionally tuned PtNi-Au model layers, prepared by magnetron co-sputtering, was conducted using a diverse range of complementary characterization techniques and electrochemistry, supported by density functional theory calculations. Our study reveals that progressively increasing the Au concentration in the Pt50Ni50 alloy from 3 to 15 at.% leads to opposing catalyst activity and stability trends. Specifically, we observe a decrease in ORR activity accompanied by an increase in catalyst stability, manifested in the suppression of both Pt and Ni dissolution. Despite the reduced activity compared to PtNi, the PtNi&ndash;Au alloy with 15 at.% Au still exhibits nearly three times the activity of monometallic Pt. It also demonstrates a significantly improved dissolution stability relative to the PtNi alloy and even monometallic Pt. These findings provide valuable insights into the intricate balance between activity and stability in multimetallic ORR catalysts, paving the way for the design of cost-effective and durable materials for PEMFCs.</p>

Dataset of "Activity-stability relationship in magnetron co-sputtered bimetallic catalysts for proton exchange membrane fuel cells"

<p>In the present study, magnetron sputtered PtxM100-x (M = Co, Cu, Y; x = 25, 50, 75 and 100) bimetallic alloys were investigated as PEMFC cathodes. &nbsp;Accurate composition control enabled a systematic study of the correlation between alloy composition, activity, and stability. The catalysts underwent thorough characterization, employing a diverse portfolio of characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The activity of all investigated alloys was tested directly in a fuel cell device, while stability was assessed through potentiodynamic cycling in a half-cell.&nbsp;<br>The activity-stability index, considering experimental results for both activity and stability, was calculated and compared for all investigated catalysts. All alloys exhibited a volcano-type trend in activity-stability index as a function of the concentration of alloying element with peaks observed at Pt50Co50, Pt50Cu50 and Pt75Y25 for respective alloys, surpassing that of monometallic platinum. Overall, Pt50Co50 emerged as a catalyst with the highest activity-stability ratio.</p>

Dataset of "Strain-Engineered Ir Shell Enhances Activity and Stability of Ir-Ru Catalysts for Water Electrolysis: An Operando Wide-Angle X-Ray Scattering Study"

<p>Ir-Ru alloys with high Ru content serve as stable and highly active catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzers (PEM-WEs), enabling efficient operation with remarkably low Ir loadings (150 &micro;g cm-&sup2;). Despite this, the mechanisms behind their enhanced stability remain unclear. In this study, we employ operando Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering (WAXS) and complementary ex-situ techniques to investigate the structural evolution of these magnetron-sputtered alloys within a PEM-WE cell. Our results reveal that, upon potential application, Ru is leached from the surface, leading to the formation of a bimetallic Ir-Ru@IrOx core-shell structure. The Ir shell, significantly strained by the underlying Ir-Ru core, exhibits substantially higher catalytic activity than pure Ir. Notably, the Ir-Ru 25:75 catalyst shows superior stability over Ir-Ru 50:50, despite its higher Ru content, due to a more robust Ir shell that protects subsurface Ir and Ru from oxidation and dissolution. This study not only clarifies the performance-enhancing mechanisms of Ir-Ru catalysts but also suggests that other, more economical materials such as Co, Os, or Ti could serve as effective cores in Ir-M systems, offering a pathway to more cost-effective catalysts for PEM-WE applications.</p>

Field Evidence of Carbon and Nitrogen Stabilization through Mineral Associated Organic Matter Formation in Coastal Wetland Soils from Apalachicola, Florida, collected in June, 2022.

This data set was used to observe the role of Mineral Associated Organic Matter Formation (MAOM) on biogeochemical soil properties in three coastal wetlands in Apalachicola, Florida. One wetland was restored using beneficial dredged sediment, increasing the soil's inorganic matter content. Soil samples were collected in June 2022 from this wetland and two nearby reference wetlands: one with high organic matter and the other with higher inorganic matter content. The samples were analyzed at the University of Central Florida for biogeochemical properties to determine which properties were most related to MAOM pools.

MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Asynchrony in coral community structure contributes to reef‑scale community stability, data for Srednick et al., Nature 2023

These data were generated in support of the manuscript: Srednick G, Davis K, and Edmunds P, Nature To evaluate whether spatial insurance effects are important on coral reefs, we explored variation over 2006–2019 in coral community structure and environmental conditions in Moorea, French Polynesia. We studied coral community structure at a single site with fringing, back reef, and fore reef habitats, and used this system to explore associations among community asynchrony, asynchrony of environmental conditions, and community stability. The daily range in seawater temperature among habitats suggests it could be a factor contributing to the variation in coral community structure. Wave-forced seawater flow facilitated larval exchange among connected habitats, differing in strength among years, and accentuated periodic connectivity among habitats at 1-7 year intervals. At this site, connected habitats harboring taxonomically similar coral assemblages and exhibiting asynchronous population dynamics can provide insurance against extirpation and may promote community stability. If these effects apply at larger spatial scale, then among-habitat community asynchrony is likely to play an important role in determining reef-wide coral community resilience. This manuscript uses data collected by the U.S. National Science Foundation's (NSF) Moorea Coral Reef Long Term Ecological Research (MCR LTER) site under Grant No. OCE 2224354 (and earlier awards). Sevilleta plant phenology predicts stability of primary production from 2002 to 2020.

The temporal stability of plant productivity affects species’ access to resources, exposure to stressors, and strength of interactions with other species in the community, including support to the food web. The magnitude of temporal stability may depend on how a species allocates resources across phenological stages, such as vegetative growth versus reproduction. Understanding whether and how plant phenological traits correlate with the long-term stability of plant biomass is particularly important in highly variable environments, such as drylands. We evaluated whether phenological traits predict the temporal stability of plant species productivity by correlating 18 years of monthly phenology observations with biannual estimates of aboveground plant biomass for 98 plant species from semi-arid grasslands and shrublands. We then paired these phenological traits with potential climate drivers to identify abiotic contexts that favor specific phenological strategies among plant species. Phenological traits strongly predicted the stability of plant species biomass. Plant species with longer annual vegetative phenophases had more stable production over time but also failed to fruit in a greater proportion of years, indicating a growth-reproduction trade-off. Earlier leaf- out dates, longer fruiting duration, and longer time lags between leaf and fruit production also predicted greater temporal stability. Species with stability-promoting traits began growing in drier conditions than their counterparts and experienced greater exposure to stress, evaluated by the wider range of temperatures and precipitation during biologically active periods. Our results suggest that bet-hedging strategies which spread resource acquisition and reproduction over longer time periods help to stabilize plant species productivity in variable environments.

Influence of Atmospheric Air Plasma Pre-Treatment of Veneers on the Mechanical Properties and Stability of Beech Plywood

<p>Wood-based sheet materials such as plywood, fiberboard, particleboard, and oriented strain board find applications in civil engineering, building technology, furniture manufacturing and many more. All these materials rely strongly on an effective bond formation between the resin and the wood base material, which gives rise to their mechanical performance and stability, as well as their resistance to moisture and liquids. In our study, we present the use of a commercial atmospheric air plasma system, which we used for the pretreatment of veneers of common beech (<em>Fagus sylvatica</em> L.) wood before formation of plywood boards. Plasma treatment parameters were optimized following the change in water contact angle. Two different stacking patterns were used for plasma-treated veneers. The time stability of the plasma modification was investigated by forming a second set of plywood boards 70 hours after plasma treatment of the respective veneers. The influence of the plasma treatment on mechanical properties was studied via bending and shear strength of the four sets of plasma-treated boards in comparison to a plywood out of the same veneer without plasma treatment. Water and moisture resistance were tested through water immersion and surface water resistance tests. Further, confocal laser scanning microscopy was used to determine changes of the surfaces&rsquo; morphologies.</p>

Overcoming Limitation of AlphaFold2 by Deep-mutational Scanning and Stability-Selection of Protein Sequences

<p>This repository contains the processed datasets and corresponding code used in our study. While AlphaFold2 revolutionizes protein structure prediction, its accuracy critically depends on evolutionary information from natural homologs&mdash;limiting applications for proteins with sparse sequence families. Here, we bypass this bottleneck by employing deep mutational scanning and stability-guided selection to generate artificial homologs. Fed into AlphaFold2, these synthetic sequences match the accuracy achieved on well-predicted proteins with rich natural homology, while providing highly accurate predictions for difficult targets&mdash;including orphan proteins previously deemed "unpredictable." Our approach achieves high accuracy (&lt;3 &Aring; RMSD for 5/8 and &lt;2 &Aring; RMSD for 7/8 targets after excluding intrinsically flexible regions). Thus, integrating simple, scalable molecular biology (mutagenesis/selection) with high-throughput sequencing can deliver the accuracy similar to but at a fraction of the cost and time of traditional experimental structure-determination methods. This hybrid framework could democratize high-resolution structural biology, opening avenues to determine structures of protein complexes, modified proteins, and condition-dependent conformations.&nbsp;</p>
