Stage height, discharge, water temperature, pH, conductivity, and dissolved oxygen at Cascade Brook in Black Rock Forest, Cornwall, NY 1998 - 2015

Black Rock Forest established a stream monitoring station in the Cascade Brook watershed in 1998. The station is equipped with a 120-degree sharp-crested v-notch weir and was built to continuously monitor the flow, temperature, pH, conductivity, and dissolved oxygen content of the stream water in Cascade Brook in New York. The Cascade Brook watershed encompasses 135 hectares (334 acres), is generally a southern aspect, and has been little affected by human activity in the last century. The forest is deciduous and dominated by oak species. The station records data hourly, and while water chemistry sensors have been used intermittently through the decades, stage height and discharge has been measured consistently from1998 - 2015.

Hourly soil moisture, soil temperature, groundwater temperature, and groundwater stage height measurements from 9 Hillslope Study sites located in Macon County, North Carolina, within the Upper Little Tennessee River Basin

The Hillslope Study was established to directly link land use impacts to streamwater quality in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Nine sites were selected in the Little Tennessee River watershed in Macon County, NC, representing four land use types: forest, mountain development, traditional valley, and large river valley. At each of these sites, three subsurface flowpaths were identified, and four plots were established along the flowpath following the elevation gradient. At seven of the nine sites, the three lower elevation plots at one of the subsurface flowpaths had ground water wells installed in order to measure groundwater stage and temperature along an elevational gradient. Additional sensors were installed adjacent to the groundwater wells to measure soil moisture at 0-30 cm and 30-60 cm below the ground surface uphill and downhill of the well, and soil temperature at 5 cm below the ground surface. Measurements were taken every 60 seconds and output as hourly averages. Data were used as part of the Regional HydroEcological Simulation System (RHESSys) ecohydrologic model. Please see the accompanying well construction data for additional groundwater well information.

High-frequency time series of stage height, stream discharge, and water quality (specific conductivity, dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, turbidity) for Stroubles Creek in Blacksburg, Virginia, USA 2013-2018

A pressure transducer (CS450, Campbell Scientific Inc., Logan, UT, USA) and a multi-parameter water quality sonde (YSI Series 6:6920 v2, YSI Inc., Yellow Springs, OH, USA) were deployed by the Virginia Tech Biological Systems Engineering (BSE) Stream Research, Education, and Management (StREAM) Lab (vtstreamlab.weebly.com/) from January 2013 to December 2018 to assess stage and water quality, and calculate discharge in Stroubles Creek, Blacksburg, VA (4118326.215 N, 549236.02 W). Stroubles Creek is a 19 km tributary of the New River in Blacksburg, Virginia, USA. Stroubles Creek begins immediately below the Virginia Tech campus and flows north into the Kanawha River in the Valley and Ridge physiographic province. Stroubles Creek was a historic water supply for the town of Blacksburg and remains a highly visible waterway in the town, as it traverses both the downtown area and much of the Virginia Tech campus. In 2002, Stroubles Creek was placed on Virginia’s 303(d) list of impaired water bodies with a benthic impairment by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VADEQ). A total maximum daily load (TMDL) plan was subsequently developed in 2003 for the stream in collaboration with Virginia Tech’s BSE department, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, and the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. During 2008-2010, a 2.1 km reach of Stroubles Creek, mostly upstream of the StREAM Lab, was restored by means of cattle exclusion, natural revegetation, bank reshaping, and creating an inset floodplain. The water quality dataset provided here is associated with the upper Stroubles Creek watershed which drains approximately 14.5 km2. Currently, data from the StREAM Lab are used by 8-10 faculty and their graduate students in 7 departments across 5 colleges at Virginia Tech for research and at least 16 classes for field labs and/or assignments.

Data for: The relationships of breeding stage to daytime singing behaviour and song perch height in Bermuda White-eyed Vireos (Vireo griseus bermudianus)

<p><span>Bird song is crucial for attracting mates and defending territories, but different types of song or different singing behaviours may be involved in acquiring or maintaining each resource. Furthermore, male songbirds may adjust when and where they sing throughout the breeding season, depending on their breeding stage. However, such relationships remain untested in several avian taxa. Here, we studied male Bermuda White-eyed Vireos (<em>Vireo griseus bermudianus</em>), a passerine with two distinct song types (discrete and rambling), to test the mate attraction and territory defence hypotheses. We compare song production and song perch height among different stages of the breeding season and during the non-breeding season. We show that male vireos produce both song types during the breeding and non-breeding seasons, suggesting dual roles in mate choice and territorial defence. Song production did not differ significantly between the breeding and non-breeding seasons, but, within the breeding season, males without nesting duties sang significantly more songs than males with nesting duties. Song perch height was higher during the breeding season versus non-breeding season, among males without nesting duties compared to males with nesting duties, and when males produced discrete versus rambling songs. Our findings suggest that male vireos increase their conspicuousness to prospecting females by increasing song production and song perch height, and that they sing during the breeding and non-breeding seasons to defend year-round territories. Collectively, our study supports the mate attraction and territory defence hypotheses of bird song.</span></p>

Text-fig. 8. Wear stages and height (h) of cheek teeth of Sayimys giganteus from Keseköy. Height in mm of the entoconid (arrow) in lower cheek teeth and paracone (arrow) in upper cheek teeth. Shown are the high value and a low value for each wear stage. Note that h of the different wear stages may show large overlaps, in particular in those of worn teeth. This is due to the often-irregular occlusal surfaces of older individuals. in An Exceptional Large Sample Of The Early Miocene Ctenodactyline Rodent Sayimys Giganteus, Specific Variation And Taxonomic Implications
