Driving social and economic development in the MENA region: the role of international organizations - Stakeholders' engagement meeting report
<p>On 15 November 2018, the Center for Public Policy and Democracy Studies (PODEM) hosted a stakeholders’ meeting in Istanbul with twenty-nine participants, including academics, experts, and representatives from civil society and international humanitarian and development organizations from Europe and the MENA region, as part of the Middle East North Africa Regional Architecture Project (MENARA). Through two panels of expert presentations and facilitated discussion, the participants addressed present challenges, ongoing transformations and future opportunities facing societies across the region, as well as the role of international organizations in addressing these challenges and opportunities. This report will summarize the discussion during that meeting in two broad parts, focusing on the region’s challenges and positive developments respectively and is further divided into sections by issue subject. Two sets of policy recommendations are provided at the end of the report.</p>
Literature review of the enablers and barriers to stakeholder and citizen engagement in climate change adaptation process (as part of Adaptation AGORA project)
<p>This dataset is the result of collaborative work for Deliverable 4.1 (WP4; T4.1) of the Adaptation AGORA project. This database was used to conduct a literature review of the enablers and barriers to stakeholder and citizen engagement in climate change adaptation process. It contains 123 papers retrived from Web of Science Databse in June 2023. <span>We used a keyword search to identify and select articles that fell within the scope of our research, with each article containing at least one keyword related to climate change adaptation solutions, climate change, co-production, citizen and stakeholder involvement and factors (enablers and barriers). </span></p> <p><span>We divided the coding framework into four main sections:</span></p> <ul> <li> <p><span>Section 1 collected basic information about the paper (i.e., date, journal, authors, type of study and methods for data collection). </span></p> </li> <li> <p><span>Section 2 sought to better understand the adaptation initiatives treated in the paper. Here, we analysed 5 variables (the adaptation solutions type, sectors, benefits, scale, and location). </span></p> </li> <li> <p><span>Section 3 collected characteristics of the climate change adaptation co-production process, including the definition of co-production, the type of the co-production process, its outputs, and the methods used to engage stakeholders. </span></p> </li> <li> <p><span>Section 4 described the factors that enable or hinder the co-production process and their influence on different aspects of the process. After naming and defining each driver, we recorded the main type of factor, its impact, origin, and spatial and temporal scale of influence; the stakeholders who were responsible for and influenced by the factor, and the impacts on the various steps and outcomes of the co-production process.</span></p> <span> </span></li> </ul>
Multi-level stakeholder engagement

The visualisation indicates how different stakeholder engagement processes are linked together.</p> <p>The Advisory Board gives advice about the design and implementation of the real pilot in Catania (where one building is renovated with the e-SAFE technical solution) as well as the co-design and stakeholder engagement protocol. These protocols are informed by the results from the real pilot in Catania, and tested in two virtual pilots in other seismic prone cities outside of Italy. </p> <p>The EU-stakeholder forum exchanges feedback and information with the real and virtual pilots, and gets access to the co-design and stakeholder engagement protocol. In that way, local, regional and European level stakeholders are engaging with the e-SAFE project.</p>
Quantitative raw data for D1.3 - "Requirements and motivations of quadruple helix stakeholders for active engagement in the Citizen Science"
<p>This dataset presents the quantitative raw data that was collected under the H2020 INCENTIVE project for the D1.3 - “Requirements and motivations of quadruple helix stakeholders for active engagement in the Citizen Science Hubs”. The dataset includes the answers that were provided by almost 2,000 participants from 4 pilot European countries (Greece, Lithuania, Spain, and the Netherlands) regarding the general public's perceptions, attitudes, concerns, motivational factors and obstacles with regard to participation in Citizen Science activities. The original survey questionnaire was created and disseminated through the EUSurvey platform, and data collection took place from April to June 2021. For the statistical analysis of the data and the conclusions drawn from the analysis, you can access the D1.3 - "Requirements and motivations of quadruple helix stakeholders for active engagement in the Citizen Science Hubs”.</p> <p>Under INCENTIVE, four Citizen Science Hubs will be established and tested during the life-span of the project in the facilities of four Research Performing and Funding Organisations (RPFOs): University of Twente (the Netherlands), Autonomous University of Barcelona (Spain), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) and Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (Lithuania). Essentially, the Hubs will aim to bring different stakeholders together and bridge society with science under the emerging paradigm of Citizen Science, in an institutionalised way.</p>

The Middle East in 2025: Stakeholder's Engagement Meeting Report
<p>On 10 and 11 January 2019, the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI), in collaboration with the Near East and South Asia (NESA) Center for Strategic Studies of the United States Department of Defense and the Qatar Armed Forces Strategic Studies Center (QAFSSC), organized the second MENARA Stakeholders’ Engagement Meeting with 32 participants, including representatives of Qatar’s government, academics and experts from Europe, the United States and the Persian Gulf region.</p> <p>The goal of the meeting was among others to discuss and test some of the Project's preliminary findings with regard to the regional order in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and the role of the European Union (EU) and other external players in the region with a group of authoritative stakeholders. This report summarizes the discussion during that meeting.</p> <p>This activity is part of the EU research project Middle East North Africa Regional Architecture (MENARA).</p>
Data Matrix Theme-Specific Analysis of the Recommendation on Science and Scientific Researchers (RSSR): Public and Stakeholder Engagement
<p>This Table sets out findings from the mapping exercise conducted as part of the objectives of subtask 6.1 of the RRING project.</p> <p>Aim: Alignment of RRI to advance the UN SDGs.</p> <p>Objectives:</p> <ul> <li>Mapping the RSSR to the SDGs </li> </ul> <p>Mapping the RSSR to the SDGs is aimed at providing new perspectives, ideas and approaches that can help to improve the operationalization and implementation of each SDG, <em>by facilitating the integration of RRI (or RRI-like) practices in the SDGs, to make them more achievable.</em> The impact of the new perspectives, ideas and approaches in SDG operationalization and implementation will be aimed at the level of <em>national and international policy (making); future research and innovation projects (in industry and academia); as well as education and training of researchers, policy makers and other stakeholders.</em></p> <p>Two documents were used for this task:</p> <ul> <li>2017 Recommendation on Science and Scientific Researchers ([RSSR], UNESCO), and</li> <li>the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).</li> </ul>
Master database for publication "Stakeholder engagement and knowledge co-production for better watershed management with the Freshwater Health Index"
<p> </p> <p>The spreadsheet is the master database used for the research with the title of "Stakeholder engagement and knowledge co-production for better watershed management with the Freshwater Health Index" to be published on <em>Current Research in Environmental Sustainability</em> in late 2022.</p> <p>The data include narratives for six principles on stakeholder engagement and knowledge co-production. These principles were derived by combining Talley et al’s five principles for effective stakeholder engagement (Talley et al. 2016) with Norström et al’s four principles for knowledge co-production (Norström et al. 2020). The six principles were aligned with the components of the freshwater health index (FHI) framework. Project leaders from nine FHI case studies completed a text table based on the description of the six principles and their FHI factors. This process generated the present master qualitative database with narrative responses. </p> <p>The socio-ecological context for each case study is provided for contextualization.</p>
Meta-analysis on Stakeholder Engagement in the Co-Production of Knowledge for Environmental Decision-making
<p>This dataset corresponds to a meta-analysis to examine the peer-reviewed scholarship on stakeholder engagement in co-production processes in environmental decision-making.</p> <p>The dataset was developed by searching keywords, abstracts, and titles in Scopus on three key themes: co-production, transdisciplinary, and community-based participatory research. A total of 709 publications were reviewed, from which 144 met the selection criterion. The 144 articles constitute this dataset. Questionnaire and interview guidelines related to Süsser et al. (2024) on how the COVID-19 pandemic changed stakeholder engagement processes in sustainability research in the long-term
<p>The survey questionnaire and the interview guidelines have been designed in the framework of the EU H2020 projects SENTINEL to study the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on the stakeholder engagement processes in susatinability research in the longterm. We conducted interviews with researchers and engaged stakeholders, using a semi-structured interview guideline. We designed the survey as an explorative, semi-quantitative, self-completion online questionnaire, using the online tool “LimeSurvey”. The survey was reworked based on our previous survey. Netzero2040: Reaching climate neutrality in Austria by 2040: engaging stakeholders for model-supported scenario development. Data repository
<p><span>This repository contains scenario results in pyam format, qualitative scenario narratives and drivers identified by stakeholders for the NetZero2040 project.</span></p> <p><span>NetZero2040 developed the first independent scenarios achieving climate-neutrality in Austria by 2040. We improve on previous analyses by employing a structured co-creation process involving stakeholders and modellers, simultaneously modelling the whole energy system and the electricity system in great detail, creating shared visions of a climate-neutral future. Results are openly available and have been broadly disseminated in the scientific community and to the public. Our scenarios are differentiated by assumptions on energy demand and imports of energy carriers. They show that a rapid electrification of transport and heating, in combination with a build out rate of renewable energies which is well above historical maxima in the Austrian power system, allow significant emission reductions until 2030, and that these measures are consistently required in all scenarios. However, after 2030 scenarios diverge and uncertainty about the most cost-efficient transformation measures prevail. </span></p>
