ADAPTING SYSTEMS ENGINEERING TO EVALUATE TECH STARTUPS: AN INNOVATIVE FRAMEWORK BASED ON OMG ESSENCE

The adaptation of system engineering to evaluate technical startups through an innovative framework based on the OMG Essence standard is a modern approach to simplify the process of analyzing and managing startups at various stages of their development. In this study, a universal framework was proposed that allows evaluating technical startups from the point of view of system engineering. This approach takes into account key aspects of startup development, such as requirements, stakeholders, technology, and team, which makes it an important tool for evaluating innovative projects.

The main purpose of the proposed framework is to apply the principles of systems engineering to the evaluation of startups, focusing on technical aspects such as system architecture, integration capabilities, and the ability of the team to solve complex tasks. Traditional methods of evaluating startups, often focusing on business aspects, may not always take into account all the technical difficulties and risks that arise when developing software products. The OMG Essence-based framework fills this gap by providing a more comprehensive tool for analyzing and managing startup development.

OMG Essence, as a standardized method, acts as a basis for formalizing practices and facilitating interaction between various project participants. The framework based on it offers the possibility of modular adaptation, which allows you to evaluate startups regardless of their complexity and current stage of development. An important feature of OMG Essence is the ability to integrate with other methodologies, which makes it universal for various fields. The application of this standard in the evaluation of startups allows you to obtain more objective results and improve the decision-making process.

RESEARCH OVERVIEW ABOUT COMPETENCIES OF STARTUPS

Front the current scenario of scientific research about startups, the question that this study focuses on answering is: “How is the current research panorama of competencies used in ventures classified as startups?” To answer the research problem described, the general objective of this study is: (i) to show the current research panorama about startup competencies. As a secondary objective: (ii) to map the main competencies of startups present in the literature. The scientific gap that this work seeks to response is create a competency framework for early-stage enterprises, in this case, startups. A group of competencies of startups operationalized in the literature were founded and can guide the theoretical framework of future works about the startup business environments, the association with their life cycle and main research themes.

The database was did to help the systematic review according to these principles [1]: (i) create a research problem that guides the research; (ii) choose the aspect to be analyzed in the literature; (iii) filter the collected data according to their relevance to the research problem; and (iv) analyze and interpret the data. The databases chosen were "Scopus" and "Web of Science" taking into account the areas "business", "business finance", "economics" and "management" in the Web of Science, and "business, management and accounting" and “economics, econometric and finance” in the Scopus. The research was carried out between January and April 2020 and January 2022. The choice for these databases occurred due to their databases contain most relevant journals in these areas in the literature [2,3].

There was no predetermined period of time in this research, but the authors only considered publications that used “blind review” process by peers. The authors used the keywords “startups”, “startup capabilities”, “startup competence”, “startup competencies” and “competencies” to collect the data and obtain the largest possible number of publications about the subject proposed. A total of 1,953 scientific articles published between 1938 and 2021 were found. Firstly, the authors excluded works that had duplication between the two platforms (the same work appearing on both) or that had no relationship with the area of administration, reducing the number of scientific articles to 1,205 published between 1976 and 2021. Next, works that did not specifically deal with topics related to startups were excluded, obtaining 148 articles published between 1996 and 2021. Finally, works that did not deal with startup competencies were excluded, obtaining 71 articles published between 2000 and 2021, that were described in detail in the database.

In a bibliometric view, the articles described in this data base were classified according to descriptive (most cited journals, country of origin and year of publication) and methodological (research method) characteristics; in addition to the results (main research topic) and citations (most cited journals). All selected articles were managed by this database plotted in Microsoft Excel with the reference of each publication and its basic information (abstract, keywords, database, type of study and so on). From the reading of the selected papers, the main competences related to startups were mapped and identified.

uEMEP startup configuration and data file for GMD uEMEP model description publication

These zip files contain the configuration and example data files for running uEMEP to reproduce the results in the uEMEP model description GMD publication (DOI: ?). Code and make files are accessible through github or through the associated repository here (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.3756008).

The zip files, once installed, allow the simulation of one day 01.01.2017. The example simulation is limitted to one day due to the size of the daily EMEP files used and the NORTRIP road dust emissions files. EMEP data for the rest of the year is accessible though 'https://thredds.met.no/thredds/catalog/data/fou-kl/uEMEP/EMEP4NO/EMEP4NO_rerun_2017_v2/catalog.html' if a complete calculation for a year, as appears in the publication, is to be made (size 5.8 GB per day). The remaining NORTRIP files for 2017 are available on request (70GB zipped file).

The 'uEMEP_demo_startup_files.zip' zip file contains a bash script 'uEMEP_script_demo_startup.sh' and configuration files for calculating this day. The config file 'uEMEP_EMEP_config_hourly_default_startup_v1.txt' is the main default configuration file for uEMEP which contains explanations of the variables. Two simulations are possible with additional configuration files. One that reproduces a mapping calculation for a small region of Oslo 'Oslo_100m_5km.txt' and one that will calculate concentrations only at positions of specified measurement site receptors in norway 'uEMEP_EMEP_extra_config_Norway_station_startup_v1.txt'.

It is necessary to change the route directories in the config files and the script file after installation and to tailor the script file to own machines and que systems.

Example log files from the two runs are included along with the resulting uEMEP output for the simulations to check reproducability.

Also included is 'matlab_plotting_scripts.zip', which contains the matlab scripts used to plot the validation results shown in the GMD article.

Cognitive proximity, business cycles, and the fate of VC-backed startups: evidence from a worldwide 34-year-long dataset

To estimate the influence of proximities on VC-backed startups' fate, we extracted data on startups and their VC investors over 34 years between 1980 and 2014. The data were extracted from Dow Jones’ VentureSource data platform. They cover VC deals in sixty-eight countries worldwide. We selected only startups financed by a VC round at least once in their lifetime. They belong to twenty-four industrial sectors (GICS 3-digit). We collected the available information on their financing rounds, investors and investment types, industry segments, and localization. For each startup in the dataset, we obtained information on VC funding rounds (“seed, 1st, 2nd, …, 9th, later, restart”) and on other sources of new funding, such as private equity investments and debt funding. Some of these funding rounds are exit events: acquisitions, mergers, IPOs or SPOs, and court liquidations. When VC investors liquidate their investments, and some new non-VC investors take over, the company is no longer VC-backed; thus, it is no longer tracked in the database. Consequently, the dataset exhibits a duration/survival structure: startups in the cross-sectional dimension but funding or exit event dates instead of calendar dates in the longitudinal dimension. The sample covers 51,969.
