Precipitation measurements from historic and current standard, storage and recording rain gauges at the Andrews Experimental Forest, 1951 to present
Andrews Forest precipitation has been measured continuously using various rain gage types since 1951. Most of these rain gages are standard (non-recording) gages with 7.5 or 8 inch orifices or large capacity storage gages intended for sites with limited access collected irregularly over longer intervals. Recording rain gages have also been established to collect higher temporal resolutions (e.g., 5 minute or 15 minute) and also used as a means of parsing (“prorating”) these periodic interval measurements from these standard and storage gages into daily totals. This data set includes an inventory of all rain gages that have operated within the Andrews as well as one site in the nearby Wildcat RNA and one in the town of Blue River. The inventory includes information regarding the date range of operation, gage location, type of gage, the rain network within which it was established, general availability of data and descriptive notes. A second table includes all of the raw measurement data for these non-recording gages over every interval where data were taken, and additionally includes the corresponding recording gage and its measurement total used to prorate data into a daily record. A third table includes the prorated daily data for all of these standard and storage gages as well as the true daily totals for two recording rain gages. A fourth table includes high temporal resolution for one early recording gage at Forks and the Mack Creek recording gage. Note that while precipitation data associated with the 6 benchmark stations are included in this rain gage inventory (Entity 1), the daily and high temporal resolution data for these sites were available through a separate meteorological data set, database code MS001, until 2025. In 2025, the benchmark station data was migrated here and will be combined with the Forks and Mack Creek data.
Xylem Embolism Formation, Refilling and Water Storage in Tree Trunks at Harvard Forest 2012
Trunks of large trees play an important role in whole-plant water balance but technical difficulties have limited most hydraulic research to small stems, leaves and roots. To investigate the dynamics of water-related processes in tree trunks, such as winter embolism refilling, xylem hydraulic vulnerability, and water storage, volumetric water content (VWC) in the main stem was monitored continuously using frequency domain moisture sensors in adult Betula papyrifera trees from early spring through the beginning of winter. An air injection technique was developed to estimate hydraulic vulnerability of the trunk xylem. Trunk VWC increased in early spring and again in autumn concurrent with root pressure during both seasons. Diurnal fluctuations and a gradual decrease in trunk VWC through the growing season were observed, which, in combination with VWC increase after significant rainfall events and depletion during periods of high water demand, indicate the importance of stem water storage in both short-and long-term water balance. Comparisons between the trunk air injection results and conventional branch hydraulic vulnerability curves showed no evidence of “vulnerability segmentation” between the main stem and small branches in B. papyrifera. Measurements of VWC following air injection, together with evidences from air injection and xylem dye perfusion, indicate that embolized vessels can be refilled by active root pressure but not in the absence of root pressure. The precise, continuous and non-destructive measurement of wood water content using frequency domain sensors provides an ideal way to probe many hydraulic processes in large tree trunks that are otherwise difficult to investigate.
Reduced erosion augments soil carbon storage under cover crops
This dataset comprises field measurements of soil organic carbon erosion and soil organic carbon stock from 152 paired control and cover crop treatments, collected from 57 published studies worldwide. It also provides related information on the collected study sites, including climate (mean annual temperature and mean annual precipitation), geography (slope and altitude), soil properties (silt+clay and SOC concentration), and agricultural management (cover crop species, tillage intensity and experimental duration). Furthermore, it includes the estimated effect sizes of soil organic carbon erosion reduction induced by cover crops in agricultural lands at the global scale.
Dataset on tree diversity metrics and aboveground carbon storage in Southeastern U.S. oak-pine forests, 2009–2019
This dataset contains measurements of tree structural and taxonomic diversity, stand attributes, and aboveground carbon storage from mixed oak-pine forests in Florida, Georgia, and Alabama, located in the southeastern United States. Data were collected from 946 mixed oak-pine, and 7224 longleaf-slash pine and oak-pine Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) plots respectively spanning the years 2009 to 2019. Variables include aboveground carbon, aboveground biomass, tree density, basal area, stand age, and diversity metrics such as Shannon indices for tree species and diameter-based structural classes. Functional diversity metrics—including functional dominance and functional divergence—are also included. These data were used to support a published study examining the interactive effects of diversity metrics on carbon storage using structural equation modeling. The geographic coverage represents humid subtropical forest regions of the southeastern U.S.

Resilience estimates of Amazon and Congo rainforests based on mean annual precipitation and root zone storage capacity
<p>Resilience refers to the capacity of the ecosystem to absorb perturbations and remain in its native stable state. Here, we quantified forest resilience of South American and African ecosystems using mean annual precipitation and root zone storage capacity (2000-2019). We adopted Hirota et al. (2011) methodology for calculating resilience using logistic regression. This logistic regression predicts the probability of forest (tree cover > 50%) as a function of the independent variable. Dataset of "Glue-assisted Exfoliation of Two-dimensional Sulfur-rich Niobium Thiophosphate (Nb4P2S21) for Sulfur-equivalent Electrode Study in Lithium Storage"
<p>Two-dimensional (2D) layered thiophosphates have garnered attention for advanced batteries due to their open ionic diffusion channels, high capacity, and unique catalytic properties. However, their potential in energy storage applications remains largely unexplored. In this study, we report for the first time a 2D transition metal thiophosphate (Nb4P2S21) with high sulfur content. Nb4P2S21, synthesized via chemical vapor transport (CVT), is treated as a sulfur-equivalent material with better conductivity than sulfur, suitable for high-capacity lithium storage. The bulk material can be delaminated into high-quality nanoplates via glue-assisted grinding exfoliation, both displaying a layered quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) morphology, which shortens the ion diffusion path and promises enhanced rate performance compared to larger lateral 2D materials. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that Nb4P2S21 has a direct bandgap of 1.64 eV (HSE06 method), with exfoliated counterparts showing near-infrared (NIR) photoluminescence at 755 nm, broadening potential applications to NIR-based devices. By tuning the working voltage window for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and controlling lithiation product formation, the material exhibits distinct electrochemical characteristics at 0 ~ 2.6 V, 0.5 ~ 2.6 V, 1.0 ~ 2.6 V, and 1.5 ~ 2.6 V. However, sulfur-rich electrodes in carbonate electrolytes demonstrate limited electrochemical potential due to polysulfide formation, leading to detrimental side reactions with carbonate-based electrolytes. Transitioning to ether-based electrolytes improves the initial reversible capacity and Coulombic efficiency of Nb4P2S21 by stabilizing the formed polysulfides. Despite this improvement, the material still mirrors the shuttle effect in lithium-sulfur batteries, diminishing active sulfur and undermining battery integrity. Further EDS and TOF-SIMS analyses of post-cycled electrode materials show significant sulfur loss and precipitation within the electrodes, exacerbating the shuttle effect and causing battery failure. Implementing strategies used in lithium-sulfur batteries, such as introducing polar host catalysts, could enhance the potential of these materials.</p>
A grazing crab drives saltmarsh carbon storage and recovery in VA, SC, and GA
Consumers can directly (e.g., consumption) and indirectly (e.g., trophic cascades) influence carbon cycling in blue carbon ecosystems. Previous work found that large grazers have nuanced effects on carbon stocks, yet, small, bioturbating-grazers, which remove plant biomass and alter sediment properties, remain an understudied driver of carbon cycling. We used field-derived and remote sensing data to quantify the grazing effects of the purple marsh crab, Sesarma reticulatum, on carbon stocks, flux, and recovery in salt marshes. Sesarma fronts led to a carbon loss of around 40-70% and Sesarma front migration rates accelerated over time. Despite latitudinal differences, front migration rate had no effect on carbon stocks, flux, or time to replacement. When we included Sesarma disturbance in carbon flux calculations, we found it may take 5-100 years for marshes to replace lost carbon, if at all. Combined, we show that small grazers cause a net loss in carbon stocks as they move through the landscape, and irrespective of migration rate, these grazer-driven impacts persist for decades. This work showcases the significant role of consumers in carbon storage and flux, challenging the classic paradigm of plant-sediment feedbacks as the primary ecogeomorphic driver of carbon cycling in blue carbon ecosystems.

Can household storage conditions reduce food waste and environmental impact ? A broccoli case study
<p>The consumption stage has been identified as the largest producer of food waste (FW) across the food supply chain (FSC), with fruit and vegetables being the most affected product category. The present study aims to determine the op- timal storage scenario at household level to avoid food waste and which has the lowest environmental footprint. Broc- coli was stored under different storage conditions: unbagged or bagged (periodically opened) in bioplastic bags inside a domestic refrigerator at 5 or 7 °C for 34 days and then analysed for relative humidity (RH), sensory properties and bioactive compounds. A life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted to evaluate the environmental profile of 1 kg of broccoli purchased by the consumer (cradle-to-grave). At day 0 (base scenario) the carbon footprint was 0.81 kg CO2 eq/kg, with the vegetable farming being the main contributor to this environmental impact, mostly driven by fertiliser (production and its emissions to air and water) and irrigation (due to electricity consumption for water pumping). Quality and food waste depended on time and storage conditions: For short storage times, within three days, the best quality combined with the lowest environmental footprint was for unbagged broccoli at 7 °C and no household food waste. However, this scenario had the highest food waste level from day 3 onwards, with increased resource loss and overall environmental footprint. For long-term storage, using a bag and storing at 5 °C helped to re- duce food waste with the lowest environmental footprint. For example, at 16 days, this scenario (bagged at 5 °C) could save 4.63 kg/FU ofbroccoli and 3.16 kg CO2 eq/FU compared to the worst scenario (unbagged at 7 °C). Consumers are the key to reducing household food waste and this research provides the knowledge for improvement.</p>
Palmyra Atoll soil and/or wood density sampling locations used in the carbon storage analysis
This dataset provided soil and/or wood density sampling locations and values from Palmyra Atoll (2016 and 2019). Soil samples were extracted to measure organic carbon content associated with different vegetation communities in Palmyra. Wood samples were collected to measure basic wood density values for dominant woody vegetation types found in Palmyra to calculate aboveground carbon values.
Factors Influencing Aboveground Carbon Storage in Mixed Oak-Pine Forests: USDA FIA Data from Southeastern U.S. (2009-2019)
This study explores factors affecting aboveground carbon (AGC) storage in mixed oak-pine forests across the Southeastern United States. Utilizing USDA Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data from 2009 to 2019, the research spans nine states: Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Louisiana, and Virginia. Data processing in R included converting units to the metric system and calculating structural diversity using Shannon diversity indices. Climate data from the PRISM Climate Group were integrated with FIA data using longitude and latitude. The research aims to uncover how various factors influence AGC storage and contribute to informed forest management practices.

Using piston corers, soils from Florida Bay and Brazilian seagrass meadows were collected to complete organic and inorganic carbon inventories for the top 1 m of soil. Instrumental analyses and loss on ignition at 500C were used to measure C content of downcore slices.

Storage enhanced nonlinearities in a cold atomic Rydberg ensemble: experimental data
