Dataset: Economical Accommodations for Neurodivergent Students in Software Engineering Education: Experiences from an Intervention in Four Undergraduate Courses

This dataset contains anonymised raw data and examples of accommodations made for neurodiverse students in four undergraduate courses in Computer Science and Software Engineering programmes. The dataset is published as a part of a book chapter in which we report the accommodations.

Overall guidelines we followed, including their sources, are contained in guidelines.md.

The raw data for the two surveys is contained in the two Excel files survey1.xlsx and survey2.xlsx. Free-text answers have been aggregated by neurodiverse and neurotypical students and anonymised, and are available in the files survey1_freetext_neurodiverse.txt, survey1_freetext_neurotypical.txt, survey2_freetext_neurodiverse.txt, and survey2_freetext_neurotypical.txt.

The remaining files are examples of the adapted lecture slides and assignment texts. Here, files starting with WEBcourse are from a mandatory undergraduate course on web development, while files starting with SEcourse are from a mandatory undergraduate course giving an overview of Software Engineering.

Data set from the design of experiment assessment rubric, from university students / future teachers

Using an assessment rubric comprising three levels of success, we evaluated six aspects of designing an experiment, which we call dimensions. This way, specific challenges were identified in two of the dimensions: forming a hypothesis and manipulating the experimental variables, where students often failed to succeed and get lower scores.

The data presented here were collected from four (4) diagnostic worksheets, which were made available to students at the beginning of the semester, where a theoretical introduction to the course is given, with reference to learning theories and their use in the teaching of Physics. Therefore, data were collected prior to discussions about the inquiry-based approach, experimental investigations, and the scientific content, such as the concepts and phenomena mentioned in the worksheets.

For the present study, we slightly modified and used a rubric that has been proposed to assess the DoE by primary and secondary school students (Lefkos et al., 2011). The modified rubric, has already been tested in a pilot study with fruitful results (Lefkos, 2024).

Lefkos, I. (2024). An Assessment Rubric for Future Teachers’ Ability to Design Experiments. Japanese International Student-Athletes' Adjustment Experience at the National Collegiate Athletic Association

This data is the interview guide that was conducted in this article. The purpose of this study is to clarify the challenges for ISAs from Japan in adjusting to the United States’ universities. Situating in the ISA adjustment model and using a unique case study design, 13 Japanese ISAs at the NCAA Division I universities were interviewed, and data were coded by a continuous comparative analysis method.

The results revealed that Japanese ISAs who participated in this study faced academic, social, athletic, personal-emotional, and institutional adjustment challenges. Particularly, Japanese ISAs differed from ISAs from other countries in several points; cultural differences, differences in communication styles, and systemic differences in academia and athletics between Japan and the US.
All datasets underlying the results cannot be sufficiently de-identified by redaction for uploading to a general data repository due to the sample size and nature of the conversations. Thus, the datasets are not available to share for ethical and privacy considerations as well as the guarantee given to the interviewees to maintain the anonymity of the interview. A reader or reviewer may apply for access to the datasets by contacting the corresponding author (matsuo. hirokazu.ga@u.tsukuba.ac.jp) directly. The access will be available upon considering the request and permission
received from the interviewees. The row datasets are in Japanese.

Data from: What influence do courses at medical school and personal experience have on interest in practicing family medicine? – results of a student survey in Hessia
Aim: Against the background of an impending shortage of family practitioners, it is important to investigate the factors influencing the choice to become one. The aim of this study was to identify factors that encourage medical students to choose to practice family medicine. Method: Using a questionnaire, students in the fourth and fifth years of their studies in the Federal State of Hesse were asked about the factors that had influenced their choice of medical specialty and their experience of courses in family medicine. Predictors of an interest in practicing family medicine were calculated using multiple logistic regression. Results: 361 questionnaires were returned, representing a response rate of 70.9%. Confirmation of personal strengths, an interest in the field, and practical experience of the subject generally turned out to be important factors influencing the choice of medical specialty. 49.3% of students expressed an interest in practicing family medicine. A link existed between an interest in working as a family doctor and the opportunity to take over an existing practice, experience of medicine in rural areas, and an appreciation of the conditions of work. With regard to education at medical school, positive experiences during a clinical traineeship in family medicine and positive role models among teachers of general practice were identified as predictors. Conclusion: Almost half the medical students were open to the idea of practicing family medicine. Experience of medicine in rural areas and positive experiences of courses in general practice were linked to an increased interest in working as a family doctor. To promote this interest, it may be a promising approach to increase opportunities to collect experience of medicine in rural areas, and to encourage highly motivated teaching practices.

A 10-day experience sampling dataset on subjective experiences of middle and secondary school students in 2022

This data note presents a dataset from a 10-day experience sampling study conducted among middle and secondary school students in 2022. The dataset includes a brief start-up survey in addition to 40 momentary assessments, enabling analysis of both inter- and intraindividual processes. The start-up survey includes validated measures on students’ perceptions of school-related support from family, peers, and teachers, general self-efficacy, and academic self-efficacy, as well as items on school enjoyment and school absenteeism. The experience sampling data includes items related to positive and negative emotions, lecture characteristics, perceived teacher style, peer relationships as well as sleep quality, breakfast, school readiness, and school day satisfaction. Data were collected using the "RealLife Exp" mobile app. Multiple procedures were undertaken to validate and confirm the reliability of the dataset. The methodological approach utilized for gathering the data featured in this dataset allows for a nuanced analysis of individual and contextual influences along with lagged effects on school well-being, with the potential to discover previously overlooked patterns and trends.
