Sulfate Concentrations and Sulfur Stable Isotope Ratios in Surface Water from the Marlborough and Waipara Winegrowing Regions, South Island of New Zealand, 2023

Agricultural sulfur (S) additions are a major anthropogenic source of S to the environment, yet our understanding of the downstream transformations and potential environmental consequences of these S inputs remains incomplete. This dataset includes surface water samples from the Marlborough and Waipara winegrowing regions of the South Island of New Zealand, where frequent applications of S fungicide are widespread. Samples were analyzed for sulfate concentration and S stable isotope ratios – the combination of which forms the S “fingerprint”. We collected surface water samples during the winter of 2023 from a variety of different locations and land use types, including vineyards, forests, pastures, and urban areas. The data table includes water sample sulfate concentrations, sulfate-S stable isotope measurements, and the S stable isotope composition of commonly used S-containing fungicides and fertilizers for comparison.

PIE LTER, stable isotope chemistry (carbon, nitrogen and sulfur) for food web analysis of functional groups in the Plum Island Sound Estuary, Massachusetts.

Stable isotopes of primary producers will be compared to stable isotopes of functional groups of organisms at primarily three sites within the estuary that have different dominant sources of organic matter. The three sites are: Lower (IBYC, SO-3, mouth of Plum Island Sound, 2-3 km upstream of the mouth of the estuary), Middle (OTL, PR-10.1, upper Sound, lower Parker, 8-11 km upstream of the mouth of the estuary) and Upper (P2, PR-21.9, upper Parker, above Middle Rd Bridge (22 km upstream of the mouth of the estuary). The Lower site is dominated by marine phytoplankton, the Middle site is dominated by a mixture of salt marsh and phytoplankton and the Upper site is dominated by oligohaline phytoplankton and fresh marsh. Ten functional groups will be sampled at each site (Surface sediment, benthic diatoms, Nereis, mummichog, ribbed mussels, POM, blue mussels, pelagic copepods (Acartia), silversides and soft shell clams (Mya). Marsh, benthic algae and phytoplankton inputs or benthic vs. pelagic pathways will be evident in the isotopic signals of these functional groups. Samples will be collected between the middle and end of August to reflect a growing season using recently produced OM. Samples of 15 – 20 individuals will be pooled for analysis. Some silverside samplings will have 3 different pooled samples for determination of variance. Often times the same species are not collected at each site due to habitat differences (salinity/discharge) so additional species are collected to try to accomplish task of getting functional groups collected.

Isotopes and content of carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur of eelgrass (Zostera marina) from West Falmouth Harbor from 2005 through 2019

West Falmouth Harbor (West Falmouth, MA, USA) has been experiencing a dramatic increase in nitrogen loading from an upgradient municipal wastewater treatment facility since the early 2000’s. As part of a long-term study into the effects of this nitrogen enrichment, we have been assessing changes in the extent and health of the eelgrass (Zostera marina) community within the harbor. Eelgrass shoots were collected during the summer and run for carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and sulfur (S) content and isotopic composition. Samples were analyzed from 7 stations in the more well-flushed outer harbor (OH), 4 stations in the middle of the harbor (MH), and 6 stations in the inner portion of the harbor in close proximity to a high groundwater nitrate source (Snug Harbor, SH). Carbon data is available from 2011 through 2018, nitrogen data from 2006 through 2018, and sulfur data from 2005 through 2019 with a few samples from 2021. Sulfur results have been published in Haviland et al. 2022 (doi: 10.1002/lno.12025).

Napa River Watershed, U.S.A. soil leachate and surface water sulfate sulfur isotopes and concentrations

Sulfur (S) is widely used in agriculture, yet little is known about its fates and consequences within upland, mixed land-use land-cover watersheds. This dataset includes samples collected throughout the Napa River Watershed, California, U.S.A., where high S applications to vineyard agriculture are common. Sample collection focused on tracing the agricultural S “fingerprint” —or the combined S stable isotope composition and concentration of sulfate—through the Watershed. We collected samples during California wet seasons (December – April) over three years (2017-2020). Samples included vineyard agriculture and non-agricultural (primarily forest, grassland, and shrubland) soil water, culvert outflows, tributaries to the Napa River, and Napa River surface water. The data table includes water sample sulfate concentrations and sulfate-S stable isotope measurements as well as the stable isotope composition of S fungicide samples.

Enhanced oxidation of SO2 by H2O2 during haze events: constraints from sulfur isotopes

<p>Sulfate aerosols play a critical role in atmospheric chemistry and climate change. However, the mechanism of sulfate formation during haze events remains highly uncertain. In this work, sulfur isotopic compositions of SO2 and sulfate in PM2.5 samples collected in Tianjin, China as well as a Rayleigh distillation model are used to constrain SO2 oxidation pathways. Here, we show the sulfur isotopic compositions of SO2 and sulfate &nbsp;as well as concentrations of major ions in PM2.5.&nbsp;Our results show that a large sulfur isotope fractionation between SO2 and sulfate observed in the first stage of haze events may be attributed to an enhanced oxidation of SO2 by H2O2. This study highlights the important role of SO2 oxidation by H2O2 during the haze events. In addition, it is particularly important to note that the sulfur isotopic fractionation factors during haze events dispaly a distinct trend to other periods, indicating that this isotopic approach is useful in understanding the sulfate formation during haze events.</p>

Data from: Sulfur isotopic discrimination factors differ among avian tissues and diets: Insights from a case study in Gentoo Penguins (Pygoscelis papua)

<p>The use of stable isotopes of sulfur (δ34S) to infer avian diets, foraging habitats, and movements is relatively uncommon, resulting in a lack of information on patterns of δ34S incorporation in avian tissue. In a controlled study of Gentoo Penguins (<em>Pygoscelis</em> <em>papua</em>), we found that diet-tissue isotopic discrimination factors (Δ34Sdiet-tissue) differed among egg components and feathers synthesized from a common diet, ranging from -0.4 to -1.7 ‰. We also found that methodical choices such as lipid extraction and prey tissue selection influenced calculated Δ34Sdiet-tissue values. Specifically, Δ34Sdiet-tissue values were lower (i.e., more negative) when calculated using whole fish relative to fish muscle and lipid-extraction biased egg yolk, but not fish tissue, δ34S values. Δ34Sdiet-tissue values obtained for Gentoo Penguins fed a marine fish diet were generally lower than those reported for freshwater-fish-consuming Double-crested Cormorants (<em>Phalacrocorax</em> <em>auritus</em>), the only other bird species in which Δ34Sdiet-tissue has been quantified. We found support for the hypothesis that tissue Δ34Sdiet-tissue values are inversely related to dietary δ34S values in birds, similar to what has been observed in mammals. Given<span> this relationship, the discrimination factors reported here for </span>Gentoo Penguins <span>may be broadly applicable to other avian species with a similar marine diet.</span> Finally, we provide recommendations for future studies seeking to quantify Δ34Sdiet-tissue in avian tissues and guidance to allow for greater application of sulfur stable isotope analysis in ornithological research.</p>
