Annual summer single-day measurements of the thermal environment with a bio-meteorological sensor under trees, shade structures, and sun-exposed areas in the Rio Salado Park in Tempe, AZ, USA

We have measured the thermal environment/bio-meteorological conditions under trees, shade structures, and at sun-exposed locations in the Rio Salado Park in Tempe, AZ, USA annually since 2018 on a clear sky, hot, sunny day in June/July to track shade performance of newly planted trees over time. Measurements were taken with a mobile bio-meteorological weather station, known as MaRTy (Middel & Krayenhoff, 2019; DOI: 10.1016/j.scitotenv.2019.06.085). Since the measurement campaign began, some of the trees have died, were removed, or their environment has changed due to external events such as a bridge collapse (2020-07-29).

Direct sun retrievals of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) total columns from Brewer #067, Rome, Italy (reprocessed with algorithm BNALG2)

<p>Cloud-screened and quality-filtered direct sun retrievals of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) vertical column densities (VCDs) derived from MkIV Brewer #067 measurements in Rome (wavelengths 425.02, 431.40, 437.35, 442.83, 448.08, and 453.20 nm) and processed using the Brewer Nitrogen Dioxide Algoritm BNALG2. Calibration is carried out with Bootstrap Estimation techniques. The values represent averages of 5 samples.</p> <p>In the latest version, days with obviously erroneous data (NO2 VCD &gt; 99.9% percentile) have been removed.</p> <p>A detailed description of the method has been accepted as a research article by the ESSD journal (H. Di&eacute;moz et al., Advanced NO2 retrieval technique for the Brewer spectrophotometer applied to the 20-year record in Rome, Italy, Earth Syst. Sci. Data, 2021).</p>

Sun compass neurons are tuned to migratory orientation in monarch butterflies

Every autumn, monarch butterflies migrate from North America to their overwintering sites in Central Mexico. To maintain their southward direction, these butterflies rely on celestial cues as orientation references. The position of the sun combined with additional skylight cues are integrated in the central complex, a region in the butterfly's brain that acts as an internal compass. However, the central complex does not solely guide the butterflies on their migration but helps monarchs in their non-migratory form manoeuvre on foraging trips through their habitat. By comparing the activity of input neurons of the central complex between migratory and non-migratory butterflies, we investigated how a different lifestyle affects the coding of orientation information in the brain. During recording, we presented the animals with different simulated celestial cues and found that the encoding of the sun was narrower in migratory compared to non-migratory butterflies. This feature might reflect the need of the migratory monarchs to rely on a precise sun compass to keep their direction during their journey. Taken together, our study sheds light on the neural coding of celestial cues and provides insights into how a compass is adapted in migratory animals to successfully steer them to their destination.

<p>Second place winner in the 2023 IAU OAE Astrophotography Contest, category Still images of the day arc of the Sun and solargraphs: The Path of the Sun, by Frank Niessen</p> <p>This enchanting image, captured in Germany between 21 June 2018 and 21 December 2018, is a poetic blend of art and science, showcasing nature's rhythm and the passage of time. It combines images taken at different times of day over the course of six months. Each curve tracks the Sun&rsquo;s path (or arc) across the sky on a particular day. The sweeping arc of the Sun is distorted here by the projection, making it appear like a curve. The position of the daily arc across the sky changes with the Sun&rsquo;s seasonal movement in the sky. Captured using a simple pinhole camera fashioned from a coffee can, it shows the Sun's journey over the course of six months, and the gradual shift of the daily arc from the summer, when it is higher in the sky, to its lowest arc at the winter solstice. Gaps in the Sun&rsquo;s path represent days or times of day when the Sun was obscured by clouds. Effects of environmental translocation and host characteristics on skin microbiomes of sun-basking fish

<p>Variation in the composition of skin-associated microbiomes has been attributed to host species, geographic location, and habitat, but the role of intraspecific phenotypic variation among host individuals remains elusive. We explored if and how host environment and different phenotypic traits were associated with microbiome composition. We conducted repeated sampling of dorsal and ventral skin microbiomes of carp individuals (<em>Cyprinus</em> <em>carpio</em>) before and after translocation from laboratory conditions to a semi-natural environment. Both alpha and beta diversity of skin-associated microbiomes increased substantially within and among individuals following translocation, particularly on dorsal body sites. The variation in microbiome composition among hosts was significantly associated with body site, sun-basking, habitat switch, and growth, but not temperature gain while basking, sex, personality, or colour morph. We suggest that the overall increase in the alpha and beta diversity estimates among hosts were induced by individuals expressing greater variation in behaviours and thus exposure to potential colonizers in the pond environment compared to the laboratory. Our results exemplify how biological diversity at one level of organization (phenotypic variation among and within fish host individuals) together with the external environment impacts biological diversity at a higher hierarchical level of organisation (richness and composition of fish-associated microbial communities).</p>

Shaped by the sun: the effect of exposure to sunlight on the evolution of spider bodies

<p>Body temperature strongly influences fitness. Some sun-exposed ectotherms thermoregulate by adjusting body posture according to the sun's position. To evaluate the impact of body shape, size and posture on body temperature, we first built a model combining traditional heat transfer models with models of thermoregulatory postures in spiders. The model indicates that both body size and shape determine thermoregulation efficiency by affecting heat gain via solar irradiance. These estimates corroborate previous empirical studies on spider thermoregulation. We then coupled meteorological data to our heat transfer model. The model predicts that body elongation in large orb-web spiders decreases the risk of high body temperatures. Lastly, we measured the elongation of orb-web spiders across 1,024 species and found that sun-exposed species evolved more elongate bodies than sun-protected species. Overall, our results suggest that thermoregulation influenced the evolution of body shapes of orb-web spiders.</p>
