Near-surface, soil, and air temperature data acquired across multiple locations on the San Joaquin Experimental Range, California, 2011-2017

These temperature records were collected as part of a larger study relating microclimates to tree seedling survival in southern California mountains. These temperature records are for studies at the San Joaquin Experimental Range (Lat 37.083, Long -119.716, elevation 210-520 m, www.fs.fed.us/psw/ef/san_joaquin/). Temperature sensors were located at 23 sites across the landscape. Sites were selected to sample topographic variation in surface and air temperatures within a narrow range of elevations on northeast to southwest-facing slopes, ridges, and valleys. To characterize surface temperature variation within a site, 21 sensors were arranged in an identical pattern around and in six, 5x5 m experimental gardens. An additional 18 sensors were placed along three transects over the landscape running E-W. They were placed strategically to sample topographic inflection points (hill tops and valley bottoms) as well as north and south facing slopes. Temperatures were recorded on a 10 or 20-minute interval, depending on the sensor, using HOBO (Onset, www.onsetcomp.com) devices.

SPHERA High Resolution Reanalysis over Italy - Hourly surface air temperature (2-meter height) 2013-2020

SPHERA (High Resolution REAnalysis over Italy) is a convection-permitting regional reanalysis developed by ARPAE-Emilia Romagna and publicly available. The SPHERA domain covers Italy and the surrounding seas with a horizontal resolution of 2.2km. The temporal coverage corresponds to the period 1995-2020 and the dataset is available at hourly frequency. SPHERA reanalysis was developed using the Numerical Weather Prediction model COSMO (www.cosmo-model.org) nested in the global reanalysis ERA5 produced by ECMWF. Moreover, upper-air and surface observations were assimilated at the convection-permitting scale by the COSMO nudging scheme.

This record reports the hourly surface air temperature at 2-meter height for the period 2013-2020. The full extension of the dataset over 1995-2020 is available over three different records due to space constraints:

1995-2003: https://zenodo.org/records/12567563

2004-2012: https://zenodo.org/records/12582246

2013-2020: https://zenodo.org/records/12582797

Update (2024-06-28): inconsistencies were noted in a subset of grib messages contained the first version of the repository (slightly different spatial domain size and missing messages at 00-hour timesteps) which have been corrected in the current version v2.

Other fields currently available on Zenodo are the surface relative humidity at 2-meter height (also over three different records due to space constraints):

1995-2003: https://zenodo.org/uploads/12724026

2004-2012: https://zenodo.org/uploads/12724104

2013-2020: https://zenodo.org/uploads/12724140

and hourly accumulated total precipitation: https://zenodo.org/records/14617083

Details on the SPHERA dataset production, as well as data verification against surface observations are reported in peer-reviewed publications. ERA5-Land weekly: Air temperature at 2 meter above surface, weekly time series for Europe at 1 km resolution (2016 - 2020)

Overview:
ERA5-Land is a reanalysis dataset providing a consistent view of the evolution of land variables over several decades at an enhanced resolution compared to ERA5. ERA5-Land has been produced by replaying the land component of the ECMWF ERA5 climate reanalysis. Reanalysis combines model data with observations from across the world into a globally complete and consistent dataset using the laws of physics. Reanalysis produces data that goes several decades back in time, providing an accurate description of the climate of the past.

Air temperature (2 m):
Temperature of air at 2m above the surface of land, sea or in-land waters. 2m temperature is calculated by interpolating between the lowest model level and the Earth's surface, taking account of the atmospheric conditions.

Processing steps:
The original hourly ERA5-Land data has been spatially enhanced from 0.1 degree to 30 arc seconds (approx. 1000 m) spatial resolution by image fusion with CHELSA data (V1.2) (https://chelsa-climate.org/). For each day we used the corresponding monthly long-term average of CHELSA. The aim was to use the fine spatial detail of CHELSA and at the same time preserve the general regional pattern and fine temporal detail of ERA5-Land. The steps included aggregation and enhancement, specifically:
1. spatially aggregate CHELSA to the resolution of ERA5-Land
2. calculate difference of ERA5-Land - aggregated CHELSA
3. interpolate differences with a Gaussian filter to 30 arc seconds
4. add the interpolated differences to CHELSA

The spatially enhanced daily ERA5-Land data has been aggregated on a weekly basis starting from Saturday for the time period 2016 - 2020.
Data available is the weekly average of daily averages, the weekly minimum of daily minima and the weekly maximum of daily maxima of air temperature (2 m).

File naming:
Average of daily average:
era5_land_t2m_avg_weekly_YYYY_MM_DD.tif

Max of daily max:
era5_land_t2m_max_weekly_YYYY_MM_DD.tif

Min of daily min:
era5_land_t2m_min_weekly_YYYY_MM_DD.tif

The date in the file name determines the start day of the week (Saturday).

Pixel value:
°C * 10
Example: Value 44 = 4.4 °C

The QML or SLD style files can be used for visualization of the temperature layers.

Coordinate reference system:
ETRS89 / LAEA Europe (EPSG:3035) (EPSG:3035)

Spatial extent:
north: 82:00:30N
south: 18N
west: 32:00:30W
east: 70E

Spatial resolution:
1km

Temporal resolution:
weekly

Time period:
01/01/2016 - 12/31/2020

Format: GeoTIFF

Representation type: Grid

Software used:
GDAL 3.2.2 and GRASS GIS 8.0.0 (r.resamp.stats -w; r.relief)

Lineage:
Dataset has been processed from original Copernicus Climate Data Store (ERA5-Land) data sources. A Daily near-surface Air Temperature Dataset for China from 1979 - 2018

The CDAT dataset contains near-surface air temperature data for China during the period of 1979-2018, in Celsius, daily temporal (Tmax, Tmin, Tavg), and 0.1º spatial resolution.

This product integrates multiple data sources such as reanalysis data (ERA5, CMFD), remote sensing data (MODIS), and in situ data, and is obtained by combining the temperature strategy to distinguish between clear sky and non-clear sky weather conditions. It is proved that this dataset has high accuracy and can be used in the further study of regional climate change.

An All-sky 1 km Daily Surface Air Temperature Product over Mainland China

An all-sky daily mean surface air temperature (Ta) product at 1 km spatial resolution over mainland China for 2003–2019 has been generated mainly from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) products and the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) dataset. Three Ta estimation models based on random forest were trained using ground measurements from 2384 stations for three different clear-sky and cloudy-sky conditions. The validation results showed that R2 and root mean square error (RMSE) values of the three models ranged from 0.984 to 0.986 and 1.342 K to 1.440 K, respectively, indicating that this high-resolution product has satisfactory accuracy.

The format of the data is tif and a sample data is provided in example.zip. The dataset is stored by year, with 6 *.zip files per year.

There is also an all-sky 0.01° daily surface air temperature product over Beijing for 2003–2019 (http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4405123), which is a sub-dataset generated from this dataset for easy and convenient understanding of this dataset. And the sub-dataset has a data volume of only 264MB after compressed.
