The CAD WALK Hallux Valgus Dataset (Pre-Surgery)

<p>This dataset contains the raw dynamic plantar pressure measurements of 50 Dutch individuals with Hallux Valgus collected prior to surgical intervention at Sint Maartenskliniek centres in the Netherlands. For each individual, between 8-15 dynamic plantar pressure measurements were collected from both feet. Also collected are walking speeds for each plantar pressure measurements, and demographic information of all individuals measured (age, height, weight, shoe size, sex, handedness, leg dominance). Additionally, x-ray images were used to measure the hallux valgus angle and intermetatarsal angle for each hallux valgus case. Finally, each participant also completed two foot self-assessment questionnaires: the Foot Function Index (FFI-5pt) and the Manchester-Oxford foot questionnaire. The score from these self-assessments are also provided.</p> <p>For more information, please see the Readme.pdf file accompanying this dataset.</p>

Data for OFDVDnet: A sensor fusion approach for video denoising in fluorescence guided surgery

<p>Many applications in machine vision and medical imaging require the capture of images from a scene with very low radiance, which may result in very noisy images and videos. An important example of such an application is the imaging of fluorescently-labeled tissue in fluorescence-guided surgery. Medical imaging systems, especially when intended to be used in surgery, are designed to operate in well-lit environments and use optical filters, time division, or other strategies that allow the simultaneous capture of low radiance fluorescence video and a well-lit visible light video of the scene. This work demonstrates video denoising can be dramatically improved by utilizing deep learning together with motion and textural cues from the noise-free video.</p>

<p>A cross-sectional study with 30 Thai preteen CLP patients aged between 8 to 12-year-old was undertaken between 2017 and 2019 at Tawanchai center. Their satisfaction with QoL was reflected through an interview and a questionnaire with the cooperation of their parents as their caregivers while satisfaction with their nasolabial appearance was from the evaluation of five experts who compared their photos with those of normal faces to determine correlation values of the nasolabial appearance from 5-rating scales using Fleiss&rsquo;s kappa coefficient scores.</p>

Code and data for: Decoupling channel count from field-of-view and spatial resolution in single-sensor imaging systems for fluorescence image-guided surgery

<p><em>Significance</em></p> <p>Near-infrared fluorescence image-guided surgery is often thought of as a spectral imaging problem where the channel count is the critical parameter, but it should also be thought of as a multiscale imaging problem where the field-of-view and spatial resolution are similarly important.</p> <p><em>Aim</em></p> <p>Conventional imaging systems based on division-of-focal-plane architectures suffer from a strict relationship between the channel count on one hand and the field-of-view and spatial resolution on the other, but bioinspired imaging systems that combine stacked photodiode image sensors and long-pass/short-pass filter arrays offer a weaker tradeoff.</p> <p><em>Approach</em></p> <p>In this paper, we explore how the relevant changes to the image sensor and associated image processing routines affect image fidelity during image-guided surgeries for tumor removal in an animal model of breast cancer and nodal mapping in women with breast cancer.</p> <p><em>Results</em></p> <p>We demonstrate that a transition from a conventional imaging system to a bioinspired one, along with optimization of the image processing routines, yields improvements in multiple measures of spectral and textural rendition relevant to surgical decision-making.</p> <p><em>Conclusions</em></p> <p>These results call for a critical examination of the devices and algorithms that underpin image-guided surgery to ensure that surgeons receive high-quality guidance and patients receive high-quality outcomes as these technologies enter clinical practice.</p>

Proceedings of the Winter Simulation Conference 2018.&nbsp; Gothenburg, Sweden.</p> <p><em>Relevant to:</em></p> <p><strong>Section 4.1.4.&nbsp; Spend some Time Observing How the Operations of the Disease Pathway are Managed</strong></p> <p>The description of the disease pathway obtained in the initial meeting may be idealized.&nbsp; It is advised that modelers spend at least a few hours in the one or more services in the real pathway to observe how it operates and to interview on-the-ground workforce.&nbsp; Observations of the system under pressure are useful to understand the complexities of the pathway and will reveal aspects that have been missed or that operate differently from described.&nbsp; This Figure illustrates a cardiac surgery pathway at a large hospital that operated on patients from a network of smaller hospitals in the UK.&nbsp; The diagram itself was primarily constructed in an initial meeting with a group of cardiac surgeons.&nbsp; Observation of the system and shadowing of specialist cardiac nurses revealed two differences from the idealized model.&nbsp; Firstly, patients could deteriorate and &lsquo;bounce back&rsquo; from post-operative care to higher levels of care.&nbsp; Secondly, in times of pressure, the post operative beds were used flexibly to accommodate patients waiting for surgery and those who had already undergone surgery.</p>

Intracorneal rings (ICRs) were developed as a treatment option to restore the natural corneal curvature by implanting rings into tunnels cut within the corneal stroma. However, selecting and placing the appropriate ring can be difficult, and predicting refractive outcomes is challenging.</p> <p><strong>Objective</strong>: The purpose of this study was to better understand the design parameters of the rings that determine postoperative refractive and mechanical outcomes.</p> <p><strong>Methods</strong>: We developed an automated finite element simulation pipeline for ICR implantation and tested 300 variations of 20 ICRs.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong>: The outcome of ICR was dominated by the vertical size of the ring; 84% of the change in corneal curvature can be attributed to the vertical size of the ring, while only 13% were attributed to the detailed cross-sectional shape of the ring. However, the cross-sectional shape of the ring is limited to the change in axial length and contact pressure between the ring and the cornea. The horizontal dimension of the ring plays only a minor role in the postoperative outcome.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion</strong>: These results support Keraring's approach to ring scaling, in which only the vertical dimension of the ring is changed, while the horizontal dimension remains constant. Numerical models help to understand ICR outcomes, design implants, and personalize empirical nomograms to achieve more successful postoperative outcomes.</p>

SICS-105: Phase recognition in Manual Small-Incision Cataract Surgery

<p><span>This prospective cross-sectional study introduces the first Manual Small-Incision Cataract Surgery (SICS) video dataset, which is prevalent but understudied in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), evaluates effectiveness of phase recognition through deep learning (DL) using the MS-TCN++ architecture and compares its results with the well-studied phacoemulsification procedure using the Cataract-101 public dataset. Our novel SICS-105 dataset involved 105 patients recruited at Sankara Eye Hospital in India. Performance is evaluated with frame-wise accuracy, edit distance, F1-score, Precision-Recall AUC, sensitivity, and specificity. The MS-TCN++ architecture performs better on the Cataract-101 dataset across reported metrics, with an accuracy of 89.97% [CI 86.69-93.46%] compared to 84.94% [CI 79.45-92.03%] on the SICS-105 dataset (ROC AUC 99.10% [98.34-99.51%] vs. 98.22% [97.17-99.39%]). Reducing the 20 phases to 13 phase in SICS improved performance without completely bridging the gap. The per-video accuracy distribution and confidence-intervals overlap between the samples. PR-AUC curves for each phase in the SICS dataset range from 46.20 to 94.18%. In conclusion, we replicated phase recognition results from phacoemulsification in a new open-access SICS dataset using DL with slightly lower prediction performance. This research marks a crucial step towards improving postoperative analysis and training for SICS.</span></p>

In recent years, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has emerged as one of these comorbidities. Herein we will review the data supporting the positive effect of bariatric surgery in patients with NAFLD.</p>

<p>Data and scripts referring to the results generated in the article entitled: <strong>Analysis of intermunicipal journeys for cardiac surgery in Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS): an approach based on network theory.</strong></p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>To obtain the results of the work the following sequence of database treatment was performed:</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>DATASUS --&gt;&nbsp;BASE_PER_YEAR --&gt; EDGES_BASE --&gt; EDGES_VC_BASE</p> <p>The bases were downloaded from the DATASUS site (link: https://datasus.saude.gov.br/transferencia-de-arquivos/#) in .dbc format separated by month and year; using Tabwin we joined the bases generating a base for each year in csv format. The reformatted bases are gathered together in the file PER_YEAR_BASE.ZIP; from the bases for each year we manually built the files in csv format with the list of the edges with the following fields: &quot;Source&quot;, &quot;Target&quot;, &quot;Type&quot;, &quot;Id&quot;, &quot;Label&quot; and &quot;Weight&quot;. The &quot;Source&quot; column was filled with data from MUNIC_RES and the &quot;Target&quot; column with data from MUNIC_MOV. The &quot;ID&quot; and &quot;Weight&quot; fields were filled in automatically using Gephi, where the &quot;Weight&quot; column represents the sum of the edge, defined by the pair of Source and Target columns, were repeated throughout the year. This generated the bases containing the list of edges that are grouped in the file EDGES_BASE.ZIP. Each base was filtered to contain only edges related to the city &quot;Vit&oacute;ria da Conquista&quot; and grouped in the file EDGES_VC_BASE.zip</p> <p>INDE BASE --&gt;&nbsp;NODES_BASE</p> <p>To build the list of nodes containing the list of municipalities with their respective geographical locations (in UTM), we used the database of the INDE (available on the link: https://visualizador.inde.gov.br/). The file in shape format was treated in the ArqGis program and the database with the network nodes was created (file NODES_BASE.csv).</p> <p>EDGES_VC_BASE and NODES_BASE --&gt;&nbsp;&nbsp;NETWORK</p> <p>Using the program Gephi we joined the bases referring to the edges (EDGES_VC_BASE) and those referring to the nodes of the network (NODES_BASE) and built the networks for each year studied for the city of &quot;Vit&oacute;ria da Conquista&quot;. All networks are in gephi format and compressed in the NETWORKS.zip file.</p> <p>EDGES_VC_BASE and NODES_BASE --&gt;&nbsp;INDICES</p> <p>Using the R script &quot;distance.R&quot; and using as input the files of edges (EDGES_VC_BASE) and nodes (NODES_BASE) we generate files in csv format with the columns: dist_med_in , dist_med_out, Flow_in and flow_out. The indexes dist_med_in and dist_med_out represent the average distance traveled in meters to enter and leave the municipality, respectively; the indexes flow_in and flow_out estimate the quantity of people that entered and left the municipality.
