FAO and SAGARPA. (2012). Baseline of the Natural Resources Sustainability Program. Sustainable Land Use Subindex - Calculation Methodology. Mexico City (53 pp.) (FAO y SAGARPA. (2012). The lack of soil data is a complication that most soil scientists will encounter throughout their career; this critical aspect is exacerbated due to the excessive cost of soil surveying. Consequently, it is essential to develop strategies that guarantee the permanent accessibility of past soil sampling efforts. The main objective of this contribution is to release an entire dataset of soil samples surveyed by the Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries, and Food (SAGARPA) in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in the year 2012, the dataset consists of more that 4000 compound samples surveyed on managed cropland. SAGARPAS's main objective was to generate a new index to assess and monitor the current and future state of soil when sustainable soil practices take place. A complete set of physicochemical properties were determined via laboratory analysis for all record in the dataset, namely: pH, EC, OM, BD, P, Sand, Silt, Clay, Texture, N, K, Ca, Mg, Na, CEC, Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR), Exchangeable Sodium Percentage (ESP), including the calculation of the Sustainable Soil Land Use Subindex (SSLUS). We presented a reviewed dataset with the potential to contribute to a large variety of studies, ranging from: agricultural pinpointing of the best conditions for crop production to digital soil mapping and modeling and agronomical studies. We also provide the original report on the developement of the dataset, indicating the names of creators and colaborators, as well as the methods of analysis and interpretation of the results. The new information is appealing for a wide diversity of users interested in soil traits across agricultural systems of Mexico.

Residential housing segregation and urban tree canopy in 37 US Cities; data in support of Locke et al 2021 in npj Urban Sustainability

Our goal in this paper is to examine whether there are similar patterns in the distribution of tree canopy by Home Owners’ Loan Corporation (HOLC) graded neighborhoods across 37 cities. A pre-print of the paper can be found here: https://osf.io/preprints/socarxiv/97zcs This data packages contains: 1. City-specific file geodatabases with features classes of the HOLC polygons obtained from the Mapping Inequality Project https://dsl.richmond.edu/panorama/redlining/, and tables summarizing tree canopy, and in some cases other land cover classes. 2. An *.R script that replicates all of the analyses, graphs, and tables in the paper. Other double checks, exploratory, and miscellaneous outputs are created by the script too as a bonus. Everything in the paper can be done with the script; additional work outputs are also created. 3. A *.csv file containing city, the HOLC grade, and the percent tree canopy cover. This can be used to create the main findings of the paper and this flat file is provided as an alternative to running the R script to extract information from the geodatabases, combine, and analyze them. The intention is that this file is more widely accessible; the underlying information is the same. Redlining was a racially discriminatory housing policy established by the federal government’s Home Owners’ Loan Corporation (HOLC) during the 1930s. For decades, redlining limited access to homeownership and wealth creation among racial minorities, contributing to a host of adverse social outcomes, including high unemployment, poverty, and residential vacancy, that persist today. While the multigenerational socioeconomic impacts of redlining are increasingly understood, the impacts on urban environments and ecosystems remains unclear. To begin to address this gap, we investigated how the HOLC policy administered 80 years ago may relate to present-day tree canopy at the neighborhood level. Urban trees provide many ecosystem services, mitigate the urban heat island effect

Comparing travel behavior and opportunities to increase transportation sustainability in small cities, towns, and rural communities

<p>The vast majority of travel behavior and sustainable transportation research has focused on urban areas. A rural perspective is lacking. In this study, we aim to dive deeper into understanding how people travel and their perceptions and opinions about various components of travel in a majority rural state. By speaking directly with Vermonters through in-person interviews, we obtain uniquely personal points of view and analyze them for commonalities and differences between urban, suburban, and rural Vermonters. We ask questions on day-to-day challenges of traveling, suggestions for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, responses to fuel prices, and opinions on electric vehicles. Some of our key findings include that rural areas struggle most with traveling long distances to reach services, urban areas are more concerned with traffic, and opinions on electric vehicle (EV) ownership are consistent across the state, with people being likely to consider owning an EV if costs were to decrease. Our interviews identify additional questions that should be evaluated further to help states develop practical and effective policies aimed at reducing GHG emissions in rural areas. We also recommend further in-depth survey research to provide a more complete picture of the potential to shift travel behavior, particularly in rural areas. This research adds to the body of knowledge in a historically understudied population, enabling the research community to better understand and work more closely with small and rural communities to address climate change and achieve deeper GHG emission reductions.</p>
