The squares themselves are based on the degree squares covering earth. Around the equator we have 360 longitudinal lines , and from the north to the south pole we have 180 latitudinal lines. Widely in S Africa, but N & W boundaries are not yet known; known to occur in S DR Congo, W Angola, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, N Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Swaziland. A species morphologically identical to Ä caffer occurs widely in East Africa but whether this refers to H. caffer or H. tephrus has not yet been established. in Hipposideridae

Occupies mainly arid and semi-arid areas, but also occurs in regions with higher precipitation and denser vegetation, such as the fynbos biome of South Africa's Western Cape Province. Cape Foxes have expanded their range over recent decades to the SW, where the species reaches the Atlantic and Indian Ocean coastlines. May occur in SW Swaziland, and possibly also in Lesotho. in Canidae
