Resurrection of Tectaria cadieri from T. ingens (Tectariaceae, Pteridophyta) based on morphological and molecular data

<p>We demonstrate that <em>Tectaria</em> <em>cadieri</em> (Tectariaceae) is a distinct species in Vietnam after long being placed under the synonymy of <em>T. ingens</em>. Morphologically, <em>T. cadieri</em> is similar to <em>T</em>. <em>ingens</em>, <em>T. setulosa</em>, <em>T. trichotoma</em> in their large fronds (up to 0.8–2 m long), 3-pinnate laminae, fully free veins, and sori in two rows on ultimate segments. However, <em>T. cadieri</em> differs from these species in the presence of linear, membranaceous stipe scales. The analyses of five plastid regions (<em>atpB</em>, <em>ndhF</em> plus <em>ndhF</em>-<em>trnN</em>, <em>rbcL</em>, <em>rps16</em>-<em>matK</em> plus <em>matK</em>, and <em>trnL</em>-<em>trnF</em>) also show that <em>T. cadieri</em> is neither closely related to <em>T. ingens</em>, <em>T. setulosa</em>, or <em>T. trichotoma</em>. Rather, <em>T. cadieri</em> is closely related to <em>T. multicaudata</em>, a morphologically distinct species with anastomosing veins. Along with a detailed description and illustrations for <em>T. cadieri</em>, we provided morphological comparisons and comments on the relationships between <em>T. cadieri</em> and morphologically similar species.</p>

A phylogenetic and morphological study of the Tectaria fuscipes group (Tectariaceae), with description of a new species

<p>The fern species <em>Tectaria</em> <em>fuscipes</em> and morphologically similar species, which are common in tropical and subtropical mainland Asia, constitute a taxonomically confusing group. To better understand species boundaries and relationships within <em>the T</em>. <em>fuscipes</em> group, we conducted phylogenetic analyses of five plastid regions and morphological observations of herbarium specimens and living plants. As a result, we produced a generally well-resolved phylogeny of the <em>T</em>. <em>fuscipes</em> group and morphologically similar species in Asia. The phylogenetic analyses supported the <em>T</em>. <em>fuscipes</em> group including <em>T</em>. <em>dissecta</em>, <em>T</em>. <em>fuscipes</em>, <em>T</em>. <em>ingens</em>, <em>T</em>. <em>paradoxa</em>, <em>T</em>. <em>setulosa</em>, <em>T</em>. <em>subfuscipes</em>, <em>T</em>. <em>subsageniacea</em> and a new species, but excluding <em>T</em>. <em>kusukusensis</em>. However, <em>T</em>. <em>fuscipes</em>, <em>T</em>. <em>subfuscipes</em> and <em>T</em>. <em>subsageniacea</em> are almost indistinguishable in morphology, which form a complex characterized by the black linear-lanceolate stipe scales. The new species found in southern China and Vietnam is described here as <em>T</em>. <em>fungii</em>. It is similar to the <em>T</em>. <em>fuscipes</em> complex and <em>T</em>. <em>kusukusensis</em>, but differs from the former mainly by its brown-castaneous lanceolate stipe scales and from the latter by having nearly hairless laminae (versus frond axes abaxially bearing copious hairs). </p>

Tectaria danangensis (Tectariaceae), a new fern species from Vietnam

<div>A new fern species, <em>Tectaria</em> <em>danangensis</em> (Tectariaceae) is described and illustrated from Vietnam, which had long been misreported as <em>T</em>. <em>crenata</em>. The new species somewhat resembles <em>T</em>. <em>poilanei</em>, a species long neglected in the fern flora of Indochina, in the frond shape and sori arrangement but differs by its sori irregularly in two rows (versus regularly 2-rowed, distantly and evenly arranged) between lateral veins of pinnae, fronds being more or less dimorphic (versus monomorphic), and basal pinnae each having a base-joined (versus free) branch. Phylogenetic analyses of selected sequences of cpDNA suggested <em>T</em>. <em>danangensis</em> has close affinity to <em>T</em>. <em>harlandii</em>. <em>Tectaria</em> <em>danangensis</em> appears to be an intermediate species between <em>T</em>. <em>harlandii</em> and <em>T</em>. <em>poilanei</em>.</div>
