The one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used for both transformed values under laboratory conditions. Means were compared using Fisher&rsquo;s least significant differences (LSD) test at P&lt; 0.05. Under field conditions, a two-way repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine the effects of insecticides and exposure time. The computations were carried out using GenStat (19th Edition, VSN International, UK).&nbsp;</p>

Biogeochemical rate data and sediment properties of samples used for a controlled flow through experiment testing the effect of nitrate on organic matter decomposition, PIE LTER, Plum Island Sound estuary, Massachusetts.

In this dataset, we used a controlled flow-through reactor (FTR) experiment to test the role of nitrate as an electron acceptor, and its effect on organic matter decomposition and the associated microbial community in salt marsh sediments. Organic matter decomposition significantly increased in response to nitrate, even at sediment depths typically considered resistant to decomposition. The use of isotope tracers suggests this pattern was largely driven by stimulated denitrification. Nitrate addition also significantly altered the microbial community and decreased alpha diversity, selecting for taxa belonging to groups known to reduce nitrate and oxidize more complex forms of organic matter. Fourier Transform-Infrared Spectroscopy further supported these results, suggesting that nitrate facilitated decomposition of complex organic matter compounds into more bioavailable forms. Taken together, these results suggest the existence of organic matter pools that only become accessible with nitrate and would otherwise remain stabilized in the sediment. The existence of such pools could have important implications for carbon storage, since greater decomposition rates as N loading increases may result in less overall burial of organic-rich sediment. Given the extent of nitrogen loading along our coastlines, it is imperative that we better understand the resilience of salt marsh systems to nutrient enrichment, especially if we hope to rely on salt marshes, and other blue carbon systems, for long-term carbon storage.

<p><strong>The SPOTS Models: A Grid of Theoretical Stellar Evolution Tracks and Isochrones For Testing The Effects of Starspots on Structure and Colors</strong></p> <p>This repository contains the Stellar Parameters of Tracks with Starspots (SPOTS) grid of theoretical stellar evolutionary tracks and isochrones, presented in Somers, Pinsonneault, and Cao (2020, in prep). Our models were calculated with the Yale Rotating Evolution Code (e.g.&nbsp;van Saders &amp; Pinsonneault, 2013, ApJ 776, 67), including updated which incorporate a treatment of surface starspots (Somers &amp; Pinsonneault, 2015, ApJ 807, 174S). Modelling details can be found in these references. The purpose of this evolutionary suite is to provide the community with state-of-the-art predictions for the influence of starspots and magnetic activity on the structure of stars.</p> <p>The grid includes both isochrones and tracks. They can be downloaded individually from this repository, or in bulk by downloading the .zip files.</p> <p><strong>Isochrones (.isoc):</strong></p> <p>Each isochrone file contains a series of isochrones (stellar properties for a range of masses at fixed age) for ages between 1 Myrs and 4 Gyrs. Each file contains these isochrones for a different surface starspot covering fraction, given by the name of the file --&nbsp; f000.isoc = 0% covering fraction, f017.isoc = 17% covering fraction, etc. Each isochrone contains several columns with different information, including,</p> <ol> <li>Fundamental properties: mass, age, luminosity, radius, logg, Teff, convective overturn timescale (TauCZ), lithium abundance relative to initial (Li/Li0).</li> <li>Starspot properties: Covering fraction (Fspot), ratio of spot temperature to ambient temperature (Xspot), the temperatures of hot and cool regions (T_hot, T_cool).</li> <li>Two-temperature colors, including Johnson BV, Cousins RI, 2MASS JHK, WISE W1, and Gaia G, BP, RP.</li> </ol> <p>Colors that fell outside of the calibrated range are listed as -99.0.</p> <p><strong>Tracks (.track):</strong></p> <p>We also include individual tracks for every combination of Fspot and Mass considered in the paper. Each .track file lists the mass and starspot covering fraction in the filename -- i.e. m055_f034.track is the model of mass 0.55Msun and with a 34% surface covering fraction. In addition to all the properties included in the isochrones, the track files also include:</p> <ol> <li>The total moment of interia of the model (total_I) and the moment of interia of the surface convection zone (CZ_I)</li> <li>The central and surface hydrogen abundances (X_cen, X_surf) and the surface metallicity (Z/X_surf)</li> <li>The deuterium abundance relative to initial (H2/H2_0)</li> </ol>

Twin test 1: Effect of vegetation on urban flows. PIV data from NTUA WT experiment and LDV from KIT WT experiment

<p>The first Twin Test (TW1) of the TWEET-IE project (<a href="http://www.tweet-ie.eu">www.tweet-ie.eu</a>) involved measurements of the flow past a surface mounted cube with openings, representing a building exposed to an atmospheric boundary layer. Tests were performed for smooth building walls but also with modelled vegetation covering the windward façade and the roof of the building. The measurements were performed both at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), in wind tunnels, at common locations around the building. Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) was used at KIT and Particle Image Velocimetry (2C-2D and 3C-2D PIV) at NTUA. In the present data set shows the effect of vegetation on the flow velocities and a comparison of the twin wind tunnel measurements.&nbsp;</p>

HISTOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTS OF ACTION BITTERS ON THE TESTES OF ADULT MALE WISTAR RATS

<p>Action Bitters, a popular herbal concoction, has been traditionally used to treat various health conditions, including those related to the male reproductive system. Despite its widespread use, there is a dearth of scientific evidence on its effects on the testes. This study aimed to investigate the histological changes in the testes of adult male Wistar rats following administration of Action Bitters.</p> <p><strong>Methods:</strong> Fifteen adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups (n = 5). Group A served as the normal control, while groups B and C received 10% (0.66ml/kg) and 5% (0.33ml/kg) lethal dose 50 (Ld50) of Action Bitters, respectively. The Ld50 values were calculated based on the median lethal dose of the herbal remedy. The rats were administered the herbal remedy for a period of one month, after which they were sacrificed, and their testes collected for histological examination.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> Microscopic examination of the testicular tissue samples revealed no evidence of abnormal cellular changes or tissue damage. The tissue samples appeared normal, with no signs of inflammation, necrosis, or apoptosis.</p> <p><strong>Discussion:</strong> The findings of this study suggest that Action Bitters does not induce histological changes in the testes of adult male Wistar rats. These results provide new insights into the potential mechanism of action of the herbal medication on testicular function. The study highlights the importance of considering both histological and biochemical assessments when evaluating the effects of herbal remedies on reproductive health.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> This study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on the effects of herbal remedies on the male reproductive system. The findings suggest that Action Bitters may be a safe and effective herbal remedy for treating reproductive health issues, and further research is warranted to explore its potential benefits and mechanisms of action.</p>

A genome-wide test for paternal indirect genetic effects on lifespan in Drosophila melanogaster

<p>Exposing sires to various environmental manipulations has demonstrated that paternal effects can be non-trivial also in species where male investment in offspring is almost exclusively limited to sperm. Whether paternal effects also have a genetic component (i.e. paternal indirect genetic effects - PIGEs) in such species is however largely unknown, primarily because of methodological difficulties separating indirect from direct effects of genes. PIGEs may nevertheless be important, since they have the capacity to contribute to evolutionary change. Here we use Drosophila genetics to construct a breeding design that allows testing nearly complete haploid genomes (&gt;99%) for PIGEs. Using this technique, we estimate the variance in male lifespan due to PIGEs among four populations and compare this to the total paternal genetic variance (the sum of paternal indirect and direct genetic effects). Our results indicate that a substantial part of the total paternal genetic variance results from PIGEs. A screen of 38 haploid genomes, randomly sampled from a single population, suggests that PIGEs also influence variation in lifespan within populations. Collectively, our results demonstrate that PIGEs may constitute an underappreciated source of phenotypic variation.</p>

Train and Evaluation Code, Road Classification Models and Test set of the paper "Insights into the Effects of Image Overlap and Image Size on Semantic Segmentation Models Trained for Road Surface Area Extraction from Aerial Orthophotography"

<p>This repository contains the Python scripts built for training and evaluation of the implementation, together with the test data and the resulting road segmentation models corresponding to the paper "Insights into the Effects of Image Overlap and Image Size on Semantic Segmentation Models Trained for Road Surface Area Extraction from Aerial Orthophotography". The scripts make use of the Tensorflow with Keras framework and their additional required dependencies.</p> <p>The training and validation set is based on the binary SROADEX dataset (<a href="../records/6482346">https://zenodo.org/records/6482346</a>) that was re-split into tiles that feature the image resolutions (256 x 256, 512 x 512, and 1024 x 1024 pixels) and image overlaps (0% and 12.5%) considered in this study. The data have been generated using scripts developed in Python using Open Source libraries (GDAL/OGR and MapScript) for rasterization of vector cartography that represents the axes of the different types of roads (urban, interurban and rural). This binary road data contains information from 16 full orthoimages (28.5 km * 18.5 km) with spatial resolution of 0.5 m/pixel from the insular and peninsular Spanish territory. Due to the size on disk of approximately 492 gigabytes, this training and validation data is only available upon request from the corresponding author. The test set has been generated from a novel area from Palencia (Spain) and features 18 million pixels labelled with the positive "Road" class. The test sets are provided in the repository for each resolution (with no overlap), so that additional DL models can be evaluated on the same data and compared with the results achieved in this study.</p> <p>The structure of the information shared in this repository is as follows:<br>The scripts have been grouped by tile resolution (256, 512 and 1024). First, the test set and the evaluation script can be found. For each tile resolution, there are two subfolders (corresponding to the "no overlap" and "12.5% overlap"). In each case, the Python scripts for training the models in the three repetitions are shared, and the trained models (H5 format) are shared in compressed form. Finally, for each resolution we also share the testing dataset which consists of two folders.</p> <p>The material is distributed under a CC-BY 4.0 license.</p>

Although most teachers might be aware of the importance of<br> technology, say, computer, rarely teachers use it for teaching vocabulary. Thus, the current study<br> aims at exploring the effects of CALL on vocabulary learning of Iranian EFL Learners. In this<br> study, 40 intermediate EFL learners, both male and female aged from 16 to 18 studying New<br> Interchange, book III, were chosen randomly from a language institute in Tehran. They were divided<br> into two twenty-member groups. The experimental group was given the VTS.S (a computer<br> program for teaching vocabularies), a computerized dictionary and provided with teacher efeedback.<br> The control group received no special software and vocabularies were taught using the<br> conventional ways with the help of a paper dictionary. A vocabulary pre-test based on the tests<br> available in their teacher&#39;s guide was given to both groups. The aim of this test was to make sure<br> that the students were not familiar with the words in advance. By pre-test/post-test comparison<br> researchers found learners exposed to VTS.S teacher e-feedback plus the computerized dictionary<br> scored higher than the control group. Both high-stake and low-stake holders can avail from the<br> findings of the study.</p>
