EB_Composite: Knowledge Graph of the First Eight Editions of the Encyclopaedia Britannica (1768-1860) Following the Heritage Textual Ontology

The EB_Composite Knowledge Graph represents information from the first eight editions of the Encyclopaedia Britannica (1768–1860), structured using the Heritage Textual Ontology (HTO). It extends our previously developed EB_HQ by incorporating multiple text sources, such as the National Library of Scotland and the Nineteenth-Century Knowledge Project, for each edition. A particular source is added, comprising of post-corrected textual content generated using deep-learning-based OCR error correction methods. These sources presents different levels of text quality, and EB_Composite enables researchers to compare these texts, and track how they are digitised or extracted from these sources.

The EB_Composite captures 4150776 RDF triples. Same as EB_HQ, it provides structured metadata and descriptions for each edition, volume, and term. By integrating information across different editions, it enables smooth tracking of concept evolution over time. Additionally, the dataset features semantic connections to external knowledge bases such as DBpedia and Wikidata, enhancing links to modern information and supporting more comprehensive analyses.

Designed to support historical research, this dataset offers rich semantic data for exploring the development of knowledge and concepts in the Encyclopaedia Britannica. It categorizes terms as either Articles or Topics, each with detailed metadata extracted from METS and ALTO XML files. OCR errors common in historical texts have been mitigated using deep-learning-based corrections.

A Novel Curated Scholarly Graph Connecting Textual and Data Publications

This dataset contains an open and curated scholarly graph we built as a training and test set for data discovery, data connection, author disambiguation, and link prediction tasks. This graph represents the European Marine Science community included in the OpenAIRE Graph. The nodes of the graph we release represent publications, datasets, software, and authors respectively; edges interconnecting research products always have the publication as source, and the dataset/software as target. In addition, edges are labeled with semantics that outline whether the publication is referencing, citing, documenting, or supplementing the related outcome. To curate and enrich nodes metadata and edges semantics, we relied on the information extracted from the PDF of the publications and the datasets/software webpages respectively. We curated the authors so to remove duplicated nodes representing the same person.

The resource we release counts 4,047 publications, 5,488 datasets, 22 software, 21,561 authors, and 9,692 edges connect publications to datasets/software. This graph is in the curated_MES folder. We provide this resource as:

a property graph: we provide the dump that can be imported in neo4j

5 jsonl files containing publications, datasets, software, authors, and relationships respectively. Each line of a jsonl file contains a JSON object representing a node and contains the metadata of that node (or a relationship).

We provide two additional scholarly graphs:

The curated MES graph with the removed edges. During the curation we removed some edges since they were labeled with an inconsistent or imprecise semantics. This graph includes the same nodes and edges as the previous one, and, in addition, it contains the edges removed during the curation pipeline; these edges are marked as Removed. This graph is in the curated_MES_with_removed_semantics folder.

The original MES community of OpenAIRE. It represents the MES community extracted from the OpenAIRE Research Graph. This graph has not been curated, and the metadata and semantics are those of the OpenAIRE Research Graph. This graph is in the original_MES_community folder.

Gazetteer_HTO: A Knowledge Graph for representing the Gazetteers of Scotland (1803-1901) following Heritage Textual Ontology

This Knowlege Graph represents the information of the "Gazeteers of Scotland" (years: 1803 - 1901) collection in RDF (ttl format). This collection comprises twenty volumes of the most popular descriptive gazetteers of Scotland in the 19th century. Principal places in Scotland, including towns, counties, castles, glens, antiquities and parishes, are listed alphabetically. Each entry includes detailed historical and geographical information about each place. The raw dataset is provided by the NLS in this link. As other NLS data collections, they are originally provided using two XMLs schemas: METS for descriptive, structural, technical and administrative metadata (Title, Author, Publisher, etc); and ALTO for encoding the OCR text of a page.

In this work, we have extracted the information from METS and ALTO XMLS using defoe tool. The KG uses the HTO to represent the information extracted. Furthermore, during the information extraction phase, we have employed several techniques to mitigate two common OCR errors: long-S and the line-break hyphenation.

Chapbooks_HTO: A Knowledge Graph for representing the "Chapbooks Printed In Scotland" (1671 - 1893) following the Heritage Textual Ontology

This Knowlege Graph represents the information of the "Chapbooks Printed In Scotland" (years: 1671 - 1893) collection in RDF (ttl format). This dataset comprises more than 3,000 chapbooks printed in Scotland from the 17th to 19th century. They form part of the Lauriston Castle Collection, which was bequeathed to the Library in 1926. It includes some 500 chapbook volumes containing around 5,500 individual items, more than half of which were printed in Scotland. The raw dataset is provided by the NLS in this link. As other NLS data collections, they are originally provided using two XMLs schemas: METS for descriptive, structural, technical and administrative metadata (Title, Author, Publisher, etc); and ALTO for encoding the OCR text of a page.

The KG uses the HTO to represent the information extracted. Furthermore, during the information extraction phase, we have employed several techniques to mitigate two common OCR errors: long-S and the line-break hyphenation.
