Supporting Data for Figures in "Localized, tidal energy extraction in Puget Sound can adjust estuary resonance and friction, modifying barotropic tides system-wide"

Supporting data for figures in "Localized, tidal energy extraction in Puget Sound can adjust estuary resonance and friction, modifying barotropic tides system-wide" by Preston S. Spicer, Parker MacCready, and Zhaoqing Yang. The manuscript is being considered for publication in Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans (2024). The article analyzes the effect of a tidal turbine farm on incident and reflected tidal energy fluxes in the Salish Sea. Files are in MATLAB data and .m format with some .txt and shape files. Files named figX.m create the corresponding Figure X using provided .mat and other files. Variable names and units correspond to graphed data of each figure in the journal article.

The influence of waves on morphodynamic impacts of energy extraction at a tidal stream turbine site in the Pentland Firth: MIKE3 HD result files

This dataset consists of the MIKE3 HD result files from simulations conducted for the paper 'The influence of waves on morphodynamic impacts of energy extraction at a tidal stream turbine site in the Pentland Firth' ( https://doi.org/10.1016/j.renene.2018.02.035 )

Sets of 2D area result files are provided for sediment transport results (ST in file name), hydrodynamic results (HD in file name) and spectral wave results (SW in file name) in different datasets. This dataset contains HD files.

Each file name provides details of the resuls contained: time of simulation (Jan or Jun); presence (Turb) or abscence (NoTurb) of tidal stream turbines in the simulations; and inclusion of waves in the simulations (tideAndWave or tide_only).

Details of the methodology are given in the above paper. Please reference the paper in any use of these results.

Spatio-temporal variability of tidal-stream energy in north-western Europe

Initial selection of tidal stream energy sites is primarily based on identifying areas with the maximum current speeds. However, optimal design and deployment of turbines requires detailed investigations of the temporal variability of the available resource, focusing on areas with reduced variability, and hence the potential for more continuous energy conversion. These aspects were investigated in some of the most promising sites for tidal array development across the north-western European shelf seas: the Alderney Race, the Fromveur Strait, the Pentland Firth, and the Orkney channels. Particular attention was dedicated to asymmetry between the flood and ebb phases of the tidal cycle (due to the phase relationship between M2 and M4 constituents), and spring-neap variability of the available resource (due to M2 and S2 compound tides). A series of high resolution models were exploited to (i) produce a detailed harmonic database of these three components, and (ii) characterize, using energy resource metrics, temporal variability of the available power density. There was a clear contrast between the Alderney Race, with reduced temporal variability over semi-diurnal and fortnightly time scales, and sites in western Brittany and North Scotland which, due to increased variability, appeared less attractive for optimal energy conversion.
