Acoustic Guitar Timbre Thematic Analysis
<p>A perceptual study was conducted to investigate listener perceptions of acoustic guitar timbre, encompassing descriptive and preference analysis, and the impact of guitar playing style on perceived timbre similarity and preference.</p> <p>The listening test was based on recordings of ten different steel-string acoustic guitars at various price points, sourced from the online music retailer Thomann (https://www.thomann.de/). For each guitar, recordings of three different songs were used, each with a different playing style: picking (mainly individual notes played with a combination of fingers and pick), strumming (mainly chords played with a pick), and fingerstyle (strings plucked with fingers rather than a pick).</p> <p>The study was completed by 27 participants (8 female, 19 male, mean age: 27) of 14 different nationalities. Participants had an advanced musical proficiency (Goldsmiths Musical Sophistication Index General Sophistication score of 97.85) and 11 of them played guitar as their primary instrument. Participants listened to each guitar in each of the three playing styles and were asked to describe the instrument's timbre, what they liked and what they disliked.</p> <p>We conducted a thematic analysis of the participant answers to the three questions (timbre description, timbre like, timbre dislike) for the ten guitars using a combination of deductive and inductive approaches. This dataset provides the analysis codebook, theme and code statistics.</p> <p>Details about the thematic analysis and the study can be found in the accompanying publication currently under revision (the reference will be added in due course).</p>

Data from: Timbres of tolerance: Co-feeding tolerance in chimpanzees and bonobos is better explained by group-specific variation than species differences
<p><span>The human species exhibits a remarkable level of social tolerance which has propelled a plethora of behavioural expressions pivotal to our biological success. To date, the evolutionary origins of humans' "ultra-sociality" remain unclear, despite a substantial research focus on our closest living evolutionary relatives, the great apes. Bonobos are typically portrayed as more socially tolerant than chimpanzees and consequentially (sometimes) presented as a better model to study the evolutionary roots of human sociality. Yet, the current evidence supporting such a species-level categorization is equivocal. Here, we used validated group-level co-feeding tasks to test 16 independent <em>Pan </em>groups living in zoo (n=9) and sanctuary (n=7) settings, representing 225 individuals. We found that the expressions of social tolerance substantially overlapped between species, thus precluding categorical inference at the species level. Instead, marked differences were observed among groups, with some bonobo groups exhibiting higher social tolerance than chimpanzee groups, and vice versa. Interestingly, substantial intergroup variation was found within species living in the same environment, which attests to Pan's behavioural flexibility. We conclude that the pervasive dichotomy between the tolerant bonobo and the belligerent chimpanzee requires quantitative nuance, and that accurate phylogenetic tracing of (human) social behaviour necessitates estimations of intraspecific intergroup variation.</span></p>
Monophonic Electric Guitar Notes to Train a Timbre Generation VAE
<p>This dataset contains a subset of audio files from the <a href="../doi/10.5281/zenodo.11398029" target="_blank" rel="noopener">SemanticTimbreDataset</a> that were used to train a Timbre Generation VAE.</p> <p>Files are organised as follows: Timbre_Group/Timbre_Descriptor/Timbre_Magnitude.</p> <p>The audio files with a timbre magnitude of 0 in the OscillationFX/Fluttery directory are monophonic electric guitar notes recorded from a Fender Stratocaster originally sourced from the EGFxSet [1]. All other audio files are those original clean samples processed through various guitar pedals affecting the sounds at various intensities (timbre magnitude). Each guitar pedal's effect can be described by a separate timbre descriptor. This training dataset contains 19 timbre descriptor groups in total, where each timbre descriptor group contains audio files with timbre magnitudes of 25, 50, 75, and 100.</p> <p> </p> <p>[1] Hegel Pedroza, Gerardo Meza, & Iran R.
