Zooplankton density for all samples collected from Toolik Lake and lakes near the Toolik Field Station, Arctic LTER 2003-2022.

Zooplankton samples were taken on lakes with a 30 cm diameter plankton net with a 256 micron mesh netting from 2018-2022. Prior years used a 156 micron mesh netting. Density was calculated based on the number of each taxa counted in a subsample or whole sample and expanded to the volume sampled to determine the number of each zooplankton taxa per liter. All samples were collected from Toolik Lake and lakes near the University of Alaska Toolik Field Station, Fairbanks, Arctic LTER from 2003-2022.

The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: This file contains the consolidated data for percent cover of dominant bryophytes and other easily identifiable macro-algae in the experimental reaches of the Kuparuk River beginning in 1993 and updated annually. In some years percent cover was recorded more than one time per season. In all years percent cover was recorded in riffle habitats and in some (early) years percent cover was recorded for pool habitats. Moss point transects have been done on the Kuparuk since 1993. The Arctic is one of the most rapidly warming regions on Earth. Responses to this warming involve acceleration of processes common to other ecosystems around the world (e.g., shifts in plant community composition) and changes to processes unique to the Arctic (e.g., carbon loss from permafrost thaw). The objectives of the Arctic Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) Project for 2017-2023 are to use the concepts of biogeochemical and community “openness” and “connectivity” to understand the responses of arctic terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems to climate change and disturbance. These objectives will be met through continued long-term monitoring of changes in undisturbed terrestrial, stream, and lake ecosystems in the vicinity of Toolik Lake, Alaska, observations of the recovery of these ecosystems from natural and imposed disturbances, maintenance of existing long-term experiments, and initiation of new experimental manipulations. Leaf Area Index every 15 cm of 1m x 1m chamber flux and point frame plots and sites where dataloggers monitored photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) above, within and below Salix pulchra and Betula nana canopies during the growing season at the Toolik Field Station in AK, Summer 2012.

Leaf area index (LAI) measurements were taken with the Delta-T SunScan wand every 15 cm from the ground to above the canopy under both direct and diffuse light. conditions The data includes all outputs from the SunScan wand: time of measurement, transmitted light, spread of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) sensors, beam fraction, and zenith angle. These measurements were taken for 1m x 1m chamber flux and point frame plots sampled in tall Salix pulchra and Betula nana shrub canopies as well as sites monitored remotely by PAR sensors situated above, within, and below tall shrub canopies at the Toolik Field Station in the summer of 2012.

The methods used were: (1) exponential relationship between LAI and Normalized Leaf Index (NDVI) as measured above the canopy with a Unispec spectroradiometer; (2) Delta-T SunScan canopy analyzer held at 5 cm above the ground under both direct and diffuse light conditions; (3) pin-drop point frame technique. Where values have been averaged (such as for the NDVI and SunScan measurements), the standard deviation is given. Raw data are available upon request for the Unispec data; the raw SunScan data is available under the file "PF_SunScan_LAI".

This file contains the fish number, recap number, species, lengths, weights, sex and a list of tissues sampled of fish captured in lakes near the Toolik Lake Arctic LTER site during summers from 1986 to 2021. The file also contains information from gill-netted fish (if any), sacrificed fish, and accidentally killed fish. All dead fish are included, and if their stomachs and otoliths were taken, that is noted also.

In 1999, a Campbell CR10x data logger was installed in block 2 of the Arctic LTER Toolik Moist Non-acidic Tussock Experimental plots(MNT97). The plots are located on a hillside near Toolik Lake (68 38' N, 149 36'W). Air temperature and relative humidity were measured at 3 meters (control), and inside the greenhouse, and fertilized greenhouse. Soil temperatures were measured with thermocouples placed in control, fertilized, greenhouse, and fertilized-greenhouse plots.

A multi-year DAILY weather file for the Arctic Tundra Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) site at Toolik Lake, AK. Included are daily averages and/or maximums and minimums of air, wind speed, soil temperature, and sum of global radiation and precipitation. In 2008 Toolik Field Station took over maintenance of the main weather station. See http://toolik.alaska.edu/edc/index.php for current weather data. In addition to the main weather station the Arctic LTER maintains several stations that collect data on the experimental plots.

Late season thaw depth was measured in the Arctic Long Term Ecological Research (ARC LTER) experimental plots (1981 Moist Acidic Tussock, 1989 Moist Acidic Tussock, 2006 Low Fertilization Moist Acidic Tussock, 1989 Moist Non-acidic Tussock, 1989 Moist Non-acidic Non-tussock and 1989 Wet Sedge tundra) at Toolik Lake, Alaska using a steel thaw probe. Note: for 2017-2018 only 1989 Moist Non-Acidic Tussock Tundra and 2006 Low fertilization Moist Acidic Tussock Tundra were measured. For other sites it has become difficult to distinguish rocks from frozen soil with a steel thaw probe. Starting in 2023 weekly thaw depth measurements were made throughout the growing season in the 2006 Low fertilization Moist Acidic Tussock Tundra experiment.

Arctic LTER Streams Chemistry Toolik Field Station, Alaska 1978 to 2019.

Since 1983, the Streams Project at the Toolik Field Station has monitored physical, chemical, and biological parameters in a 5-km, fourth-order reach of the Kuparuk River near its intersection with the Dalton Highway and the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. In 1989, similar studies were begun on a 3.5-km, third-order reach of a second stream, Oksrukuyik Creek. In each river, physical conditions (such as discharge and temperature), nutrient levels, primary production, insects, and fishes are monitored throughout the summer. Also, we conduct experimental fertilization of the Kuparuk River and Oksrukuyik Creek to determine the effects of added phosphorus and nitrogen on primary productivity, insect communities, and fish growth in arctic rivers. The Oksrukuyik Creek has not been fertilized since 1996. The Kuparuk River received phosphorus additions from 1983 through 2016. Station sites are relative distance from the original nutrient drippers for both the Kuparuk and Oksrukuyik. Kuparuk stations include sites in a reference, recovery, and fertilized reach. Reaches were defined based on the location of nutrient addition (see methods).

Stream height is converted into stream discharge based on a rating curve calculated from manual discharge measurements throughout the season.
