Dissolved trace element concentration profiles of micronutrients (Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Co) and contaminants (Cd, Pb) in seawater from discrete bottle samples from CCE Process Cruises in the California Current System, 2021 - 2025 (ongoing).

Dissolved trace element is sampled from the trace metal clean rosette. The sample is collected by filtering seawater through a 0.2µm PES filter. The seawater sample is then acidified to pH~1.8 using ultra clean hydrochloric acid and subsequently analyzed using sector-field inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, scanning in low and medium resolution, with either standard curve or isotope dilution methods. The samples are used to develop a description of the distribution of dissolved trace elements in the CCE region.

<p>Description of the project: The rapid growth of cities, industry and transport has significantly deteriorated environmental quality, especially in areas with the highest population densities. It applies to water, soil, and air, especially in urban areas. Air pollutants include particulate matter (PM), which harms human health. According to WHO reports (2021), PM pollution is the cause of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, leading to 4.2 million premature deaths worldwide in 2016. Although improving every year, the situation in Poland is still worse than in many European countries. The particulate matter also includes heavy metals, which have a toxic effect on plants. Plants in urban areas are particularly vulnerable, especially trees, which perform several vital functions, including mitigating climate change, filtering pollutants, and improving air quality. The aim of the project was to determine and compare the morphological and physiological responses of selected tree species to particulate pollution stress under urban conditions. Tree leaves are an essential barrier to atmospheric dust by trapping it on their surface. However, this may come at the cost of reduced light absorption, increased leaf temperature, damage to leaf blades and consequently impaired photosynthesis and plant productivity. However, the ability to absorb dust varies between tree species. It depends on the leaf surface structure, and the response may be due to the species' sensitivity to pollutants. Investigations were conducted in the Upper Silesian Industrial Area around various emission sources, such as heavy metal smelters, combined heat and power plants, and busy streets. The research focused on two tree species common in urban areas, the Norway maple (<i>Acer platanoides</i>) and the small-leaved lime (<i>Tilia cordata</i>). It included measurement of heavy metal concentrations in leaf blades and dust collected on their surface, analysis of concentrations of selected pigments and ascorbic acid as markers of environmental stress. The study provided a preliminary assessment of the impact of particulate pollution on tree function under harsh urban conditions and determined the potential of the studied species to reduce atmospheric dust.</p>

Data for: Intra- and interspecific variation in trace element concentrations in feathers of North European Trans-African migrants

<p>The knowledge of migratory connectivity is important for understanding the potential drivers of populations and it is thus important for conservation implications. Migratory connectivity of species can be studied using exogenous, such as rings and transmitters, or endogenous markers, such as stable isotopes and trace elements. The use of trace elements has been much less frequently studied compared to stable isotopes. Trace elements can be studied from the feathers of birds and this does not necessarily require trapping of individuals. Here we studied the variation of 18 different trace elements in feathers of two long-distance trans-African migrants, willow warblers Phylloscopus trochilus and barn swallows Hirundo rustica, using body feathers of museum specimens of birds from Finnish breeding grounds. The trace elements were measured using Laser-Ablation Inductively-Coupled-Plasma Mass-Spectrometry. We show that trace element concentrations were relatively stable along the rachis within the same feather except in Ni and S, which showed a quadratic pattern. In general, variation within feathers of the same individuals was smaller than in feathers between individuals for most elements. Furthermore, concentrations of 11 trace elements showed significantly higher concentrations in willow warbler feathers collected in spring than in autumn, moulted in African wintering grounds and European breeding grounds, respectively. Last, concentrations of seven trace elements were significantly higher in the spring feathers of willow warblers compared to barn swallows. This suggests that trace elements could be used to separate moulting grounds of the birds on the larger scale within the same species, but also sampling design should be carefully considered.</p>
