TIME4CS WP4 Mapping of citizen science training resources

This dataset was compiled as part of the TIME4CS project, WP4, and lists identified citizen science training resources, as of July 2022.

The EU-citizen.science platform provided the basis for mapping CS training in Europe, as the team behind the platform has put considerable effort into compiling, and encouraging the CS community to contribute, CS training resources. Additionally, training courses were identified based on the case studies in WP1, as most universities do not list their courses on the EU-citizen.science platform.

Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) Training Coordinating Center (TCC) Educational Resource Discovery Index (ERuDIte) as Linked Data

This is a release of the Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) Training Coordinating Center (TCC) Educational Resource Discovery Index (ERuDIte) as Linked Data.

ERuDIte contains over 11,000 training resources on data science including courses (MOOCs), video tutorials, conference talks, and other materials. The metadata of these resources is described uniformly using schema.org. In addition, we use machine learning techniques to tag each resource with concepts from the Data Science Education Ontology (DSEO), which we developed to further describe the contents of the training resources. Resource relevance and tags are curated by experts to ensure high quality. Finally, we map the references to people and organizations in the learning resource metadata to entities in DBpedia, DBLP, and ORCID, thus embedding our collection in the web of linked data. Our collection is continually growing. We hope that ERuDIte will provide a framework to foster open linked educational resources on the web.

Distributed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/)

Human review for post-training improvement of low-resource language performance in large language models

Large language models (LLMs) have significantly improved natural language processing, holding the potential to support health workers and their clients directly. Unfortunately, there is a substantial and variable drop in performance for low-resource languages. Here we present results from an exploratory case study in Malawi, aiming to enhance the performance of LLMs in Chichewa through innovative prompt engineering techniques. By focusing on practical evaluations over traditional metrics, we assess the subjective utility of LLM outputs, prioritizing end-user satisfaction. Our findings suggest that tailored prompt engineering may improve LLM utility in underserved linguistic contexts, offering a promising avenue to bridge the language inclusivity gap in digital health interventions.

Constructing visualization tools and training resources to assess climate impacts on the channel islands national marine sanctuary NetCDF files

The Channel Islands Marine Sanctuary (CINMS) comprises 1,470 square miles surrounding the Northern Channel Islands: Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and Santa Barbara, protecting various species and habitats. However, these sensitive habitats are highly susceptible to climate-driven 'shock' events which are associated with extreme values of temperature, pH, or ocean nutrient levels. A particularly devastating example was seen in 2014-16, when extreme temperatures and changes in nutrient conditions off the California coast led to large-scale die-offs of marine organisms. Global climate models are the best tool available to predict how these shocks may respond to climate change. To better understand the drivers and statistics of climate-driven ecosystem shocks, a 'large ensemble' of simulations run with multiple climate models will be used. The objective of this project is to develop a Python-based web application to visualize ecologically significant climate variables near the CINMS. The web application will be used by researchers from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) to analyze climate model output, and by CINMS staff to develop new indicators of shocks to marine ecosystems.

Video Tutorial Resources to Support Student Training in Tidal Data Digitization

These videos serve as supplementary resources to assist students in digitizing high and low tidal points for two specific phases: Phase 1 (2023-2024), focusing on Dublin Port with selected years from the 1970s, and Phase 2 (2024-2025), centred on Kilrush (Training Dataset).
