Molecular composition of dissolved organic matter in NTL-LTER lakes detected by Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry

The composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) varies widely in the environment due to distinct sources of the material and subsequent processing. DOM composition drives its reactivity in terms of many processes including photochemical reactions, microbial metabolism, and carbon cycling within water bodies. This study uses ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry via a Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer (FT-ICR MS) to evaluate DOM composition at the molecular level to determine differences in DOM composition among the NTL-LTER lakes. Whole water samples were collected from the surface of each lake near the shore on August 18th and 19th in 2016 in. Ultraviolet-visible spectra were recorded as light absorbance can also give information about DOM composition. Additionally, concentrations of anions, cations, and pH were measured waters because these can all alter DOM reactivity in the environment. Both water chemistry and DOM composition vary widely among the lakes with the bogs displaying the most terrestrial-like signature in DOM and the oligotrophic lakes show more microbial-like or environmentally processed DOM.

Molecular composition of dissolved organic matter from Lake Mendota from June – November 2017, analyzed by Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a complex mixture of organic compounds found in all natural waters. Its composition affects its reactivity towards numerous processes. Its composition is a function of both its source (e.g., allochthonous or autochthonous) as well as the extent of environmental processing it has undergone (e.g., chemical or biological degradation). Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) allows for the characterization of dissolved organic matter at the molecular level. The water sample was collected near the NTL-LTER research buoy on Lake Mendota. Formula assignments were made to raw mass to charge ratios detected in the mass spectrum using a custom processing script and resulting in a list of chemical formulas making up the DOM sample.

Land transformation on multi-decadal timescales reveals expanding croplands and settlements at the expense of tree-covered areas and mangroves in Nigeria

<p>A&nbsp;comparative assessment of the change patterns was conducted for seven&nbsp;categories&nbsp;using&nbsp;multi-decadal&nbsp;timescales in seven agroecological zones during three time-intervals (i.e., 1986 &ndash; 2000, 2000 &ndash; 2013, and 2013 &ndash; 2022).&nbsp;These selected periods cover important epochs in Nigeria&rsquo;s recent history. To examine how much humans have appropriated natural cover (HANLC) in Nigeria over the last four decades, we differentiated natural covers (e.g., tree-covered areas, grasslands, wetlands, and waterbodies) from human activity-related uses (e.g., cropland, artificial surfaces and otherland). To identify trajectories of changes signifying human appropriation of land cover, we evaluated the drivers and processes underlying these major transitions, 1) Natural regeneration and afforestation, 2) Cropland expansion, and 3) Settlement and infrastructure development.&nbsp;Cropland expansion is Nigeria&rsquo;s most widespread change process with much loss of croplands related to natural regeneration and settlement expansion.&nbsp;The transition matrix is provided showing the extent of land-cover changes in Nigeria over almost four decades (1986 - 2022).&nbsp;Major land cover transitions in each agroecological zone is presented. Analysis of land cover change in each agroecological zone is over 100% when areas of persistence (i.e., areas of no change) are not considered in the analysis.</p>

Dataset of "Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Activity in Mo₂TiC₂Tₓ MXene Derived from Mo₂TiAlC₂ MAX Phase: Insights from Compositional Transformations"

<p>MAX phases represent a crucial building block for the synthesis of MXenes, which constitute an intriguing class of materials with significant application potential. This study investigates the catalytic properties of Mo₂TiAlC₂ MAX phase and the corresponding Mo₂TiC₂Tₓ MXene for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Characterization by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that despite the presence of secondary phases, the HER catalytic activity is primarily influenced by the MAX phase and its derived MXene. Interestingly, the catalytic activity of the MXene improves over time, attributed to the formation of MoO₂ as identified by XPS. This work enhances the understanding of MXene-based materials for electrochemical applications, highlighting crucial structural and chemical transformations that optimize their performance in sustainable energy technologies.3D structure of lanthanum strontium manganite and yttria-stabilized zirconia composites is predicted based on conductivity measurements using Monte Carlo 3D equivalent circuit network approach. Microbially-Mediated Transformations of Estuarine Dissolved Organic Matter from Doboy Sound, Sapelo Sound and the Altamaha River near Sapelo Island, Georgia in 2012-2013

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) samples were collected from a marsh-dominated estuarine system (Altamaha River estuary, Doboy Sound and Sapelo Sound near Sapelo Island, Georgia), inoculated with native microbiological samples, and incubated in the dark for up to 70 days. Control and incubated DOM samples were then anlyzed using ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry to investiage microbially-mediated transformations at the molecular level. Samples were collected at high tide in November 2012 and May 2013.

Obtaining Problem Statements and Transformation into Ideas - Workshop Data Set

<p>In order to enable members of a socio-technical evolutionary-teal organization to design their technical component, we conducted a workshop that structures the collaboration between technical trained participants and non-trained participants. F general challenges in the form of &ldquo;problem statements&rdquo; have been gathered. Afterwards, these are transformed into ideas for organizational and technical change.</p> <p>The design thinking workshop is set up as a standalone, roughly five-hour group discussion, following the principles of participatory design. It has been recorded in video and this data set contains a textual German transcript and transcripts of the moderation cards that have been created during the workshop.</p> <p>We hope that the material can be used to (a) comprehend the interpretation used in our qualitative research, (b) to adapt the workshop model by other volunteers of our case study Viva con Agua de St. Pauli e.V. (https://www.vivaconagua.org/), and (c) investigate other interesting research questions.</p>

<p>In order to enable members of a socio-technical evolutionary-teal organization to&nbsp;design their technical component, we conducted a workshop that structures the collaboration between members. The workshop aims to transform &quot;vague needs&quot; and unexpressed problems&nbsp;into &quot;problem statements&quot; and further addressable goals.</p> <p>The workshop is the first part of series of workshops all limited to two hours. It uses the methods of&nbsp;<em>Design Thinking</em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>Participatory Design</em>.</p> <p>The workshop is described by transcribed moderation cards that have been created during the workshop,&nbsp;material needed to conduct the workshop (e.g. agenda, etc.), and questionnaires assessing the workshop qualitatively.</p> <p>We hope that the material can be used to (a) comprehend the interpretation used in our qualitative research, (b) to adapt the workshop model by other volunteers of our case study Viva con Agua de St. Pauli e.V. Resilient farm demographics withstand, adapt, or transform in the face of competitive pressure, technological change, and the expected lifestyles of future generations

<p>Farm demographics has been recognized as an important driver of structural change in European agriculture. Focus groups and computer simulations on farm demographic change were used to better understand its role for the case study regions of the Altmark in the eastern part of Germany and Flanders in the northern part of Belgium. According to these analyses, many potential agricultural entrants are deterred by what they view as a poor quality of life that farming offers. This applies to farm successors as well as hired workers. For higher attractiveness of agriculture, policy objectives should address the social image of farming as well as revitalize rural areas. Increasingly critical is the demand for skilled hired labour. However, policies dealing with farm demographic change ignore these needs and focus almost exclusively on farm succession. Particularly, the direct payment system, including additional support for small farms and young farmers, must be re-evaluated for its effectiveness. The analyses provide evidence that this system constrains European agricultural development more than assists it; ultimately preventing farms from adapting and transforming.</p>
